What about audionote, their stuff is impressive and IIRC their top of the range amp was the most espensive amp in the world, can;t remember the exact price but I think it might have been something like 40k, per channel, for the power amp alone - so you need two of those plus similarly priced pre-amps - madness lol

I could recomend a handful but I bet you would not have heard of them..

DLS - one of the top aps you can buy and sister company to Genesis - but in my opinion - better

Xetec - the prestige range really is the top dollar

Directed - the leader company for the smaller brands. Very good quality and good RMS figures. Not as expensive, but still does a competition level range. Very good value for money and I have a top supplier of them... do soe very good deals (and I do not have any bias - just found a good deal)

the human reign is an awesome bit of kit for sound qualirt, the jbs is amazing for pure power. it all depends on what you want, id have to agree with EncoreWRC regarding DLS being one of the top names. but for me its too hard to cll, theres stuff like tru, hammer, us amps, etc all good, but not mass marketed, enthiusiasts choice.

About 10 years ago I bought the McIntosh MC4000M.

Six channels, massive power with all the finesse of a high end home audio amp. Some nice features too, but its size and weight made the install a bitch. 2x300wrms and 4x100wrms. They usually tested about 40% more than quoted power.

No such thing as the best amp... like any audio it all depends on the listener...

I have KEF Reference speakers at home on my audio system, I personally auditioned meridian digital speakers and countless others before making my choice. In my mind they are awesome, my dad has a set of Kef Coda 9's which he reckons sound better, and perhaps for his choice of music they do..

The marks of a good amp are signal to noise ratio, but once they are level then it can ALL boil down to the warmess/clinical sound that the listener wants..

McIntosh, soundstream used to make some AWESOME stuff...

Hell, Rockford used to be the stuff of dreams in the car audio market a few years back, now it is as common as muck...

I had a rockford EPX2, which I still have, which at the time was black-gold in the audio market, now... the head units have it built in.

I've got a Phoenix Gold Xenon 1200.1 amp and a Titanium 600.2 amp waiting to go into my install. They're not too shabby :)

I'm sorry, but a valve amplifier in a car system is just stupid.
They're playing on the fact that as far as guitar amps go, valves rock (literally.. the sound breaks up nicely when they're turned up too much), and the fact that this has given valve/tube amps legendary status in terms of guitar amplifiers.
A car amp should simply amplify the input signal cleanly and properly, it shouldn't change it, or make it 'warm' or anything - that's not the point of the amp.
Anyone who buys a valve car amp has just been taken for a big ride IMO. They saw you coming :D

I installed one of the newish Soundstream amps for a friend and tbh the power ratings (as with Audiobahn gear) are very generous with the truth.

Audiobahn isnt great either they are all in the same league as JBL i believe along with fusion, sony etc, and quite alot of the buget chav car audio stuff thats on the market if you want some real quality car audio you have to look past halfords and go to car audio specialist we have one in colchester (world of ICE) that wont even sell you JBL if you ask for it lol

audiobahn are far from chavy. splx and sony, pioneer etc are chavy, iv had some higher range audibahn stuff, it wasnt great if im honest but its far from chavy.

I also remember using the phoenix gold M100. Now that amp sounded sweet with everything, got to be my favourite front end amp of all time. Have used more expensive stuff, but this has all the power and gorgeous sound I could ever ask for.

Actually, pioneer arent chavy at all - they make the best head units (apart from alpine), have a really good spl sub, and (if they would import it from japan) have a amazing system made of fibre optics etc (no loss of signal i belive, but i may be wrong). Jamie shaw from carisma has one of these systems - 1 hu, 1 amp, 1 set of mids, and one 10" sub - all in his porsche - cost him £10K and sounds the dogs in terms of quality.

Audiobahn at one point were the make to go for, but now halfords sell them, and the new stuff has a tendency to blow very easily (I know 3 people who have gone through 3 amps and 2 subs between them). unfortunately thats what happens when manufacturers go for the cash (like Rockford - as Phoenix-one said).

pioneer, i ment the budget stuff you see in halfords, there £50 sub isnt alot to be proud of.

but i agree their headunits are good.

as for the new audiobahn i cant comment as all my stuff was a few years back:)

I can't fault the £75 Blaupunkt amps I bought a pair of.
German engineering and Bosch generally don't make crap. It does what it says on the tin, very well too.

you get on with KEF speakers? see well everyone is different. I spent ages (like years) thinking of my hi-fi speaker upgrade. In the end I 'accidently' strolled into a 'hi-end' hi-fi shop where most of the makes I'd never heard of and their entry level budget stuff was like 1k spendors and the like. I spent all day listening and in the end I stumbled accross a one off pair they had in to demo, made by 'Audes', model 'blues' and these blew me away. I had to have them and because they were specials he did them for me for half price.

He did have them on an amazing pair of mono amps when I heard them and my arcam diva a85 doesn't even come close to doing them justice, but that will be the next thing to upgrade of course.

The marks of a good amp are signal to noise ratio, but once they are level then it can ALL boil down to the warmess/clinical sound that the listener wants..

there is so much more than signal to noise ratio, in fact in terms of what maters when listening this isn't such a big deal as nearly all amps have a high enough signal to noise to not really be an issue. Most of the noise comes from the source anyway.

Most importantly are damping, dynamic range, output impedance, distortion (amount and type) and so on...

to be honest, it doesn't matter what you put in your car, it doesn't really come close to proper hifi. Loud yes, impressive sometimes but hi-fi it is not - partly because no mater what you do, car accoustics is all wrong.
