I am thinking of upgrading to windows vista, one thought though, if I buy the upgrade will it be effected because I have a not got a genuine copy of windows already or is it better to by the full version and not an upgrade???

No it shoudn't make a difference bud, so just upgrade.

Before you even attempt it, back up all important files etc on to disc.

Are there different versions of it as well? Cos I bought XP home when it was quite new and loads of people said I should have got professional - what's the best one?

Pro's the best one, but it may be overkill if all you use the PC for is just to surf and word pro. etc. Refering to Win XP.

with previous versions of windows - if the copy you were upgrading FROM was not legit then your upgrade would not happen.... i know a guy who's officexp and windows were locked (he had to reformat the whole thing) because it was illegal and he tried to do an update :(

I got 32-bit Home Premium for about 70£ from overclockers, full install thingy, its OEM but its fine. Ultimate just ads more bulk I wouldnt make use of.

I would always do a fresh install rather than carrying performance issues and clutter from previous installs.

I installed Vista Ultimate - you dont need the key to install - you have 30 days grace. Luckily i get it as part of the MSDN subscription, but i nearly shite myself when i saw the cost £280 + vat .

I think ill stick with my MSDN copy

is it the case that a lot of software i.e games that were for xp originally will not run on vista, i am tempted to upgrade myself?

I only play World of Warcraft, and it runs fine.

Personally, i tihnk Vista is superb - a very impressive OS indeed. I use Visual Studio 2005, Photoshop, Adobe Audition and they all run fine.

Nero 7 had a small problem so i removed that , but Vista has built in burning anyway.

Another MS court case there :D

I wouldnt bother with Vista just yet, unless of course you wanna slow your PC down for some slight visual gain and compatability issues :eyebrows:

you have to have an Activated version of windows before you can use the upgrade otherwise it wont install. so kinda screws the dodgy copy really.

MSDN subscriptions are so cool...

So much easier...

Is cool, but if hardware is not certified for VISTA you may have some issues.

Vista seems ok, been running it on a spare computer for a few weeks now. Its very quick in a random turn Microsoft seem to have made it less memory hungry than XP.

Not gonna use it on my main PC just yet, gonna wait and see the first service pack, and the build up to see what needs doing.

Lol cant beat being a microsoft partner , sure as hell beats paying the full wack for all the software they release.
