Wez
Hey All, Is there a legal limit to the tint on the rear windows and hatch, I know you are not allowed to tint the windscreen and that the front windows have to be pretty light. I would like to almost black out the rear and hatch
Ian W
don't think there's a limit....dark as you like mate.

Trig
How much roughly is it to have this done?
flukey-lukey
Yep I've got my rear window and little side windows tinted and at night its very difficult to see whats behind you. I've often mistaken a taxi for a police car
Trig
I mistake all cars for police cars at night!!
flukey-lukey
Helps keep my speed down if I think every car behind me is a police car I suppose lol as far as price goes it depends on the company that does it, maybe £130-ish? You could do it yourself if you're pretty handy at that kind of stuff
RobSheffield
this is on the cards for this year for mine Meant to do it long long ago actually, but its a 'when i get round to it' job
Wez
Ahh ok, maybe I wont go really dark black then. I removing the rear seats and just wanted a tint to cover it from the outside
jamesmark
I am positive there is a limit on light getting through. Class one might be able to say something on the matter.
letmeshowyou
Mine was like this when I got it, and to be honest, I hate it. It's the not knowing whats behind you that gets to me!
flukey-lukey
I am positive there is a limit on light getting through. Class one might be able to say something on the matter. Not on the rears. There used to be a limit for the fronts of 70% iirc, but now they have changed it to no tints in the fronts at all.
DamanC
Ok, here goes Rear screen and rear quaters. No limit Fronts have to allow 70% of light through. That however does not mean you can put a light smoke (30%) on as stock windows are tinted around 20% already £25 a window, with lifetime garentee through me
Wez
£25 a window, with lifetime garentee through me I take it thats fitted
monkey76364
£25 a window, with lifetime garentee through me so you saying the small rear quaters are the same price as the back window ! Still ....good price!
DamanC
so you saying the small rear quaters are the same price as the back window ! Still ....good price! Nearly the same amount of effort involved. Plus 25 nuggets is a nice easy number I could put it up if you like? Wez - Fitted, what are you talking about? You have to do it yourself (thats a joke if anyone hasn't woke up yet)

Chris Wilson
There is a law change and MOT change imminent, so you well be forced to remove any heavy tints shortly. My wife got told yesterday that her Jeep may not pass an MOT next year with dark side and rear window tints. That pleased me, I don't like the thing at the best of times, although it's been useful pulling trees down in the wood recently, and I like it even less when it looks like an inpoverished drug mules car. tbourner
The actual problem that people gloss over is that clear glass (at average car window thickness) allows 86% light transmission, all manufacturers add tint of some kind for cooling and UV protection etc. which brings it down to between 70% and 80%, if you add ANY film you risk going below the 70% limit. This means you have modified your car to make it unroadworthy and therefore invalidates your insurance!!!! You can have ANY film behind the drivers seat. If you really want you could replace your windows with inch think steel.
Chris Wilson
So you can have a totally opaque rear screen and be solely reliant on the door mirrors for rear vision, like in a box van?
tbourner
Yep. Like you say vans do it so why should the law be different for them? The MG van they brought out was basically a Rover 25 body with metal sheets in the rear windows and the seats ripped out.
