19" wheels

ok so everybody says that handling is bad on these, but why ?

is it because there is less depth on the sidewalls which causes a harder ride or is it some kind of bad magic ?

I have 19's and I'm very happy with them. I moved from 18's which handled very well.

I found I got a bit more tramlining but thats it. Car still handles well (I'm on tein coilovers).

You need to go for fairly lighweight ones from a good manufacturer.

I will be doing a full report soon on 17" stock wheels Vs 18's Vs 19's.

Edit: Envy were doing a very good deal on forged 19's, very light weight!

yes, part of the reason will be the reduced side wall due to lower profile tyres.

however this is only part of the theory. when you consider that the 'rim' part of the wheel will be further away from the hub which the wheel is attached to, it's only going to behave less ideally than a stock wheel which was taken into account when the car was designed.

another certain downside would be increased wear in suspension components (i.e. wheel bearings etc)

Its people that buy heavy crap ebay 19" wheels that suffer with problems imo... mine is on 19's and drives very well.

Paul wiffins car is on 19's and he dont have any problems on track.

I've had no problems with mine.

Part of the reason is to do with the unsprung mass. The spring and dampers will react differently with the extra mass of the wheel as it's displaced vertically with the road surface. Also as a wheel rotates it will have a gyroscopic effect to maintain it's position when forced to move. A larger wheel will resist movement moreso than a smaller wheel and be less responsive. I think.

Chris said that the extra rolling size of the wheel alters the geometry - and it's this that can't be compensated for.. or something like that... the suspension wasn't designed for that size of wheel.

also - unsprung mass of the wheel - true - but I weighed the Jspec calipers against the uk spec ones and there was a massive difference - 1.5-2kg if I remember - the 6 pot rotora ones I put on are the same weight as the jspec... and wheel weights vary a lot too I guess..

I run 19's and although not looking for every ounce of handling I do well with them. They feel sharper than the 18's at moderate speeds.

19" can and will work very nicely. However you need a top grade lightweight wheel, a geometry reset a high quality tyre and a bushings upgrade.

People who have problems dont do a geometry reset, buy cheap crap heavyweight wheels, and low budget "sureslide" tyres.

Lots of top cars in the USA run 19", but then again they are all afraid of corners lmao.

Mine is on 19's and handles very well.. Just make sure they're set up right. Correct tyre sizes, wheel offset etc...

When you took me out in your car i was so impressed by the ride quality!

Ill take you out in mine with its 19s on and let you see what i mean!

My blue Supe had good quality 19" wheels and tyres when I got it. The handling was ok for normal road use although it tram-lined badly and the ride was harsh. I've now put the 18" Lexus rims from my other Supra onto the blue car and it's a lot nicer to drive.

OK they don't look as flash but I can live with that.

I'll probably go for 18's next time i get new wheels. Mainly due to the tyre prices. There's not a big difference in looks if you go for the right ones.

I had 18's on my car but i changed to 17's as the drive was so harsh. Also because my car is a 2 i'm limited by how big a sidewall i can have. Max i could fit on the back was 225x35 which is crap for traction and cornering.

Still not ideal for the 2 but i'm running 245x45 on 17's which is much better but my speedo is out lol.

If i could afford wide enough wheels and rubber i would honestly go for a lowered supra on 17's. Would need to be at least 9" rears though, preferably 10's.

Im goging to go for 19's I think this year :o) Had my heart set on the Do-luck double 6's but the price is such a downer lol - we will see...

Ide like an alternative to that wheel tho - where the spokes come from the centre and roll out to the rim?

Needed 19's to allow me to get on and off the drive with my ride height.

not had any issues but I don't hammer the corners to hard anyway + since I fitted them not sure if we've had any dry weather in the last 40 days

i had awesome azev 19s on my supra and was happy untill i read so many posts about bad handling. replaced with uk 17s and yes it does handle better but and it is a big but it doesnt look anything like the car it did and people tell you it too. so i am buying some 19s off a member to give my car the look again. i can justify it has i will be able to mix and match with the aristo which is also running uk 17s at mo.

There's nothing wrong with the TTE (Lexus) 18"s. I think they look great on the Supra, and especially now I've changed the Lexus centre caps for the TTE ones anyway!

So reading this, I assume that your suspension, and maybe brake set up, should be calibrated to having the larger 19" wheels as well as just ensuring they are good quality rims? Specialist and expensive stuff init!
