View Full Version : Excesses in the City
Is about to start on ITV1.
It's about traders in London and their sky high salaries and bonuses.
I went to see my mum at the weekend and my step-dad was saying that my step-brother (who is an investment banker in the city) was given a bonus at Christmas. Any ideas how much his Christmas bonus was? His wages for the year! That's a 50k bonus.
I'm so in the wrong job.
You and me both. He got a bonus of 3 and half years of my wages!!
Cant watch it, i'll just get pissed off,
Well somebody's got to do the hard work! What firm does he work for?
Is it bad that I don't know?
that has just pissed me off... turned it off now ! ... that is shocking !
mind you i wish i was earning that :)
Charlie
question is - how many people are actually earning that much?
There are SO MANY apartments that are empty in East london at the moment. house shortage - what shortage?

Not good, but if I could earn that amount I would not say no:)

That's the thing about my step-brother though, he's such a normal guy. He isn't all blow and show like the ones on the program. But you don't have to have any sort of qualifications for it, he did a Chemistry degree!

Too many terrorist cells around there maybe?
One of the lads I went to school with is working in investment-something in London now. He's 23 and earning over 70k a year :wtf: . Ridiculous! That said, he leaves for work at about half 6 and regularly gets home gone midnight/one o'clock. As has been said, your life is theirs, but at least they pay you well for the privilege
What kind of business skills could a 23 year old have that would be worth 70k?
Not that 70k is really all that much money nowadays. Plenty of IT contractors earn more.
Reminds me of Trading Places :) Just get the tramps in, they'd do the same job :)

..and here's me dreaming about how happy I'd be earning 17-20k.
time for a career change for me

What sort of IT contracts are we talking about here Jake, IT salarys have considerably drops over the last 10yrs and are still dropping now :( Specialist IT contractors eg .net, C++, C# programmers are commanding higer salarys but these are usually within a bank anyway with a 70k + figure, thats quite high
just wait till all stocks/shares fall through the floor....
then all this lot will start jumping out the sky scraper windows :)

He probably doesn't need "business skills" as such in all honesty - he's good with his numbers and apparantly is willing to work like a mule with them. I agree with RedM though - 20k a year's a decent salary. So long as I earn enough to keep the Supe going, I'm happy for now  I'll worry about mortgages later....

20k a year's a decent salary.
I think that depends on your age, outgoings and size of family.
i started to watch it but had to turn over.
i went through a phase of working all hours for 2 years chasing the money. one day then i just realised that it wasnt bringing the happiness with it so cut back my working hours to a minimum. now 'me time' is top proirity for me and im much more happier. money, to an extent, isnt evertything

You're only 25 though, that's the beginning of your career.

Oh I see, I thought you meant you were working too hard already?
I would have thought you work your hardest in your 20s to get somewhere in your 30s?
me work hard?? :d :d put the hours in maybe:d like i said i chased the money for a few years but needed more of my own time. il be somewhere when im 30 as i also graduate in a year and a half on a degree which the firm has funded and want me to get to allow me to make the step up into management.

And where you live. Hampshire is sodding expensive compared t'up north where the hills are green and rent is half the price.

I think that used to be the case. Now prices where Mike's family live in Middlesbrough are the same as Portsmouth.
Although Surrey is a different story.

True. I was more thinking where my parents live (Cheshire). They had their house valued about a year ago and were told that "if it was on the South coast somewhere, it'd be worth over double what it is" How much to stick a house on the back of an artic'?
