Guys,

Any chance of getting a wiki setup for the technical articles? Allows self moderation as well a simple view interface where technical stuff can be posted up.

The only people who can contribute or read from the wiki should be fully paid up members, just my view.

Any idea what happened.. I'm guessing it would have to be linked to the site somehow to pass the user info through.

VBulletin and MW integration

Only catch I can see reading through that is that users can't have spaces or underscores, which could be an issue.

Yes I started it off, but didn't get too far. Mawby made some changes to the technical section back then and things became a little more organised anyway.

I got as far as structuring the thing a bit and making dummy pages (which took ages as it was!):

Yes it was. Not sure the link works now due to subsequent forum upgrades.
Mawby requested I do not divulge the location of it.

mawby can't even remember the location and would need to look on the server to find out!

It *should* still work but might need the integration part re-doing. I recall it wasn't really very well integrated back then but that was probably a year ago now so it might have improved.

Any further updates on this? I just reckon it would be very handy for searching technical stuff and the like?

Thanks

It was discussed during the mods meet, the resulting decision was;

"It was decided that this has been attempted in the past and didn't work then due to the lack of integration (ie searching from main forum) It was also noted that the facility for anybody to edit and add information could cause problems with the integrity of the data, whereas at the moment using the technical articles, glossary and FAQ gives us control over the content."

So unless there is something vital that a wiki will offer that we cannot do already then we wont be implementing the wiki.

(Worth mentioning now that the reference to "been attempted in the past" was when I first started looking after the server and I spent 3 solid weeks converting the old technical reference section into a wiki. When it went live the response extremely negative. It was suggested that it would never get used as the wiki would not return search results in the default forum search, and people would be forever posting "look in the wiki" when someone asks a question. So I deleted it.)

Point taken and thanks for looking at it, I'll see if I can find anything wiki-like that MAY integrate better, although I have my doubts either solution will work cleanly (wiki or other).

Thanks

What feature of a wiki cannot we not already achieve with the forum?

It would be nice to have sections rather than just long threads...

For instance on the gauge thread I started...

It would be nice to have a topic heading of "Gauges available", and then have a section about each of the available type, which people can then discuss the pro's and con's. Having it all in one thread results in a VERY long thread discussing two types.

Just conscious of the fact that doing this in a forum style system will result in LOTS of sections which could get messy to admin / setup
