1992 was when CAT's where introduced in the UK i belive

 

Exactly. A pre-92 car is tested to non cat levels (even if the manufacturer fitted a cat). Hence my 964 has had the cat removed but still passes MOTs.

A post 92 car is tested to cat levels. In theory - it doesn't have to have the cat fitted for the MOT, but it doesn't have much chance of passing the MOT without it.
