View Full Version : Spelling mods.
Can we have grammar/spelling moderators please? Can I be one? I promise not to abuse people for simple spelling or grammer mistakes, only the irritating ones. (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=84868&page=4)
vB do a mod to add a spellchecker, I'd like that.
I think that is a little excessive.
I think that is a little excessive.
It's not. We could have a three strikes system. Just to say that we only tolerate people who make at least a little bit of effort.
When I read "there fu*ked ant", it comes across like:
"dere fu*kd intit". My brain goes wobbly from the wrong word at the start.

I have visited forums that make this place look like University Challenge.
With the exception of the odd few mistakes I think it is generally an understandable place.
It would create a bad atmostphere with members feeling like they were being told off.

See, I'd allow that. You'd still have your three strikes left ;)

I'd tell you to stick your strikes up your ar*e. ;)
I'm not suggesting telling people off over simple spelling mistakes, although seriously excessive offenders might be offered free lessons via PM. I'm thinking more about the retarded posts where no effort has been spent at all.

I think the moment when someone comes here with text speak or whatever most people tell them straight away that it's not how they like to converse.
Shall we leave this in the 'not very useful' club suggestion box?
:d
Well how about a new subforum: "Fickos Forum" ?
Something needs to be done.

You have an ignore button. ;)
You have an ignore button. ;)
I've just been thinking about that..
How about a method of sharing ignore lists so that like-minded folks can maintain a good level of bliss? Sort of like spam filtering.

But I might hate someone because they are a pen*s not just because they can't spell properly.
Yes that's true. Yet another failed club suggestion then :(
I still think spelling police are a good idea. Nothing nasty, just a "Please take extra care with your posts in future" or somesuch.
use firefox and it spell checks for you.
use firefox and it spell checks for you.
I'm stuck with IE6 at work, no extras allowed.

But we can't make everyone run Firefox.. that'd be even more difficult.
I'm stuck with IE6 at work, no extras allowed.
Use word spell checker.
Who gives a fu*k..... you should be banned for being a prick.

Your a bit stressy, you just brought a new bike innit?
There, i have 3 strikes :)

Ssh.
I've got a better suggestion.
People over the age of 16 ignoring (any) thing that annoys them to save looking like an immature fool?

I'd have to sack myself, I'm the one responsible for it all being legit and certified :)

Just don't tell yourself you installed it then, or print a fake certification memo off and send it through internal post to yourself.

As far as I can see we have two underlying issues here:
1. Text speak (or txt spk)
2. Bad spelling
Both are not related, so first we need to establish which
Carl0s would like to address.
My personal view is “txt spk” is annoying and also tiresome to read,
therefore should not be encourage, although banning would
seem a little to harsh unless constantly abused.
Spelling, well this is difficult to comment on as I myself
am constantly guilty of this. I would however like to take this
opportunity to remind some people that this is a social
community and many people consider the time spent
on the forum as relaxation and a time to unwind without
the hassels of the norm 9-5 working evermoment.
In other words.
“STICK YOU SPELL-CHECK UP YOUR ARSE HOLE!”

We already have spell check mods anyway - they're called forum members!!
Show me one thread started by a newbie with bad spelling that didn't get shot down in flames!!!
I think having mod rights to ban people for spelling is over the top - people get ignored and laughed at for bad spelling, or at least michael directs them to a sarcastic website designed to take the piss out of them, and that's usually enough to stop people doing it or not coming back.

 spot on there
wouldn't mind something being done about txt speak though.
Lose the text speak yes. But I am sure that there may be members on here that have dyslexia.
Any way I come on here as it is a social forum, not to literary make indulgencies.

... sorry couldn't find that word in the English dictionary... 1st strike :d
I still think it would be nice to implement the vB spell checker for those people who want to try and spell things correctly. Nobody should be forced to though, this is a Supra forum not the Mensa one.

Well, the thing is, I was reading D8MOA's thread about his unfortunate crash, and got to the end of it, and was about to post up something sarcastic or frustrated about use of THERE and YOUR and VOLTURE and COMEING but I just thought better of it, and came here instead ;)
It probably is immature (thanks Charlotte ;) ) but it was meant kind of tongue-in-cheek as well as semi-serious. Certainly the three strikes thing was a joke, but it'd be nice to have some moderators telling people off, or at least it being an officially allowed thing to tell people to straighten up and fly right, rather than regular members having a go and then feeling like they might get in trouble themselves.

or a 'pedantic punch in the mush' for people criticising spelling
The Firefox spellchecker throws up some real howlers even using English(UK) spelling option.
Perhaps a simple smilie would help http://www.teckademicseast.com/forums/images/smilies/sign34eu.gif

sorry guys just had to add my 2p's worth.
i am diagnoised as mildly literatly dislexic, meaning i suffer word blindness.
i do and will make appologises for my spelling as you will see on my threads/posts because i am extreamly self conciouse of it, not to mention it makes me look like a complete DICK,
i do agree that text speak is highly annoying but have to say i am a little pissed at the original SPELLING dig by carlos.
sorry had to get that off my chest

sorry had to get that off my chest  I don't know anything about dyslexia so excuse me for asking but do dyslexics find txt spk easier or harder to read than proper English?
I notice that you rarely use capital letters to start a sentance, is that to do with being dyslexic too?
No offence meant mate. I'm just interested.

none taken Jake,
some times it easier for me to read because of the word blidness, so missing out a few letters dosnt make any difference to me and other times it drives me up the wall because words are so miss spelt or chopped up even einstein couldnt desipher it lol.
as for not using capital letters i supose thats a situation of life imertating art, because of my dislexia my hand wrighting is absolutley terriable so i tend to write either in all capitals or attempt my version of cursive.
it didnt help me that i always had crap writing and it wasnt till i was 22 i found out i had dislexia, though school teachers just called me lazy im 28 now.
Interesting. Cheers.
Sounds like a pain in the arse though mate.

oh it can be m8,
you try writing somthing and say you want to put "and" as the next word and your mind just goes blank. you know it starts with an A and ends in D but you just cant "see" the middle letter. its well weird.thankfully thats an extreame example which dosent happen that offten. lol so some times i stand no chance with bigger words lol
I'm certain that dyslexia is blown out of proportion and stupid people use it as an excuse though. Someone who can't spell and doing bad at school their parents pipe up with a dyslixic answer and the kid believes it, and then goes through life using it to get away with being a dumb-arse!!! Having never actually been diagnosed with it. Also doctors get away with an easy diagnosis and don't have to tell someone they're simply a bit thick!
BTW I mean no offense to crash here, I can tell from his writing (other posts as well) he is truelly dyslixic.

And so am I!
Actually I edited that post about 4 times after posting it, and didn't get that.

Well it wasn't intended to offend anyone, and was clearly aimed at the people who are just far too lazy and clearly ignorant of the efforts other people take (yourself included from what you have said) to communicate half decently.

Yes I have thought the same many times. It's a kind of drugless nocebo effect I suppose.
I notice that you rarely use capital letters to start a sentance.
Can't believe you got away with that one. :)
I think I'm pretty good with spelling and grammar, only when I'm rushing a reply and don't check it I make mistakes (someone will no doubt search my previous posts now and find some).
I've never seen this thread before but was the mistake in the first post meant to be ironic, or is it just me?
H.

It's in italic, and was meant to suggest that we all make mistakes, including the usual cockup of complaining about bad 'grammer'.
I think they'res a line between what you're all find acceptable and what u dont. Everybody seems to want rid of the txtspk but there upset that somebody finds completely wrong words irritating.
If I was to swap around the words 'think' and 'my' (for example) in everything I wrote, you'd find it bloody difficult to read properly and it'd probably screw with your head and eyes a little bit trying to read it fluently, yet people insist on doing exactly this just because a few words sound similar.
Anyway, I was just voicing my frustration. Three strikes, and grammar lessons via PM were a joke. I've discovered the ignore button now so I'll drop it ;)

Sorry Carlos, did not notice the italics at first glance. I remember pulling up one of the aussies about spelling in a post recently and making a mistake in the post myself, I shouldn't judge everybody by my own stupidity.
Good on you mate I'm all for higher standards!!
Can't stand text speak anyway mate!!

It's someone from the post that triggered all this.
However the man has Dyslexia, surely that is an excuse? It is other numb nuts like me that are not doing the spelling and grammar as best as it can be sometimes.
PS am I ignored now? :p
