View Full Version : Portsmouth/Southampton mini-meet

mawby
11-06-03, 21:09
A couple of us have decided to try and organise a mini-meet for people in Southampton and Portsmouth and anyone else who wants to come along.

 Unless anyone has a better suggestion, we've decided that Lee-on-the-solent will be a good place to hold it. It's nicely situated between Southampton and Portsmouth and is really easy to find if you don't know the area. There are also loads of places to park and if it's hot and sunny we can go down the beach; buy an icecream and the likes!
:burp: The intention is to meet at a pub and then decide what to do from there, thats if we wanna leave the pub! I'd recommed The Old Ship pub as a good place to go as they have an outdoor drinking area right next to the car park, and they also serve some good food. Details of the pub can be found below. Again, other suggestions are welcome.

Finally the date. We've decided to hold it in July as it will hopefully be nice and sunny and also gives people plently of notice. The following dates are available so far...

6th (Sunday )
12th (Saturday)
13th (Sunday)
20th (Sunday)
26th (Saturday)
27th (Sunday)

So if your interested in going then could you let me know here, including prefered dates or dates you know you can't make. Hopefully I can then sort out a date suitable for everyone. :)

Cheers,
Lee

I could be up from that.

I'm living in Burgess Hill now but I'm a Pompey boy originally, I have friends who live in Lee so could double it up with a visit to them.

Can't do the 6th, but any of the other dates could be OK if I book it with "the boss" as far in advance as possible :D

mawby
11-06-03, 22:27
if I book it with "the boss" as far in advance as possible I'm glad you said that, I'd better run it past my boss too! Oh well, bit late now! :D

So that narrows it down to the following dates...

12th (Saturday)
13th (Sunday)
20th (Sunday)
26th (Saturday)
27th (Sunday)

...with the following people hopefully attending...

Speaking of "the boss", she's just reminded me that Billing is on 26/27th!!

I'm definately going to Billing, so won't be able to make those dates - you don't really want to double up with one of the biggest Jap meets of the year anyway!!

mawby
11-06-03, 22:36
:stupid: D'oh! Thats a good point. So that narrows it down to...

12th (Saturday)
13th (Sunday)
20th (Sunday)

The France thing's tempting, not sure whether I can do that yet - would be nice to have the option though...

I guess lets see what date(s) the other Pompey people or Scummers can do... :D

yep I'd be up for this.

mawby
11-06-03, 22:58
Right, I've just done a search on "20th July OR 20/7" and it returned just two topics, this one and the Upcomming Events one (Where it matched 20th and July on different lines)

So I think it's going to be the Sunday 20th July, unless enough people want to make it one of the other dates.

I guess lets see what date(s) the other Pompey people or Scummers can do...
That's one of the reasons I suggested Lee as a place to meet, neutral ground to prevent any rivalry! :p

So it still looks like the 20th July is the best date so far with the following in attendance...

So that's 3 people from Portsmouth, 1 from Southampton and 1 from Guildford. Jive, you need to get more Southampton people along :stickpoke, otherwise you're gonna be out numbered!

mawby
12-06-03, 16:08
OK, in that case I think we'd best finalise the details.

Date: 20th July
Place: The Old Ship, Lee-On-The-Solent
Time: I'll check when they open but I can be there anytime.

For anyone who doesn't know the area I've made up (in the context of producing rather than being fictitious! :p) some maps showing how to get there from the M27. There's one for people comming from the Portsmouth direction and one for those comming from Southampton. There's also a close up of the area showing local road names and alternative places to park should the pub carpark be full.

Portsmouth people...

Southampton people...

Yeah I'm definitely up for this, will be turning up with a hangover no doubt as it's my mates wedding the day before, hair of the dog will be in order.

I only just noticed this thread, I don't usually read the Gatherings and Events cos they're all bleeding miles away and I still don't know what/where "Billing" is.

I'll be there for this one though, add me to the list.

We should go somewhere scenic to take some pics of the group* of Supras.
Needs to be somewhere picturesque . . . Fratton Park maybe? :D

Is this gonna be a Geezers Only thing or can we bring the GFs?

* - What is the collective noun for a bunch of Supras?

13-06-03, 09:00
A pose of Supras?
A fury of Supras?
A clamour of Supras?
A horde of Supras?
A thunder of Supras?
A drove of Supras?
A pride of Supras?
A stampede of Supras? (if moving)

Cant go anywhere to close to Portsmouth though, we havent had our inoculations.

Eh bringin GF's along sounds like you have already had your injections of "de-trousering"!!

Just kidding guys, but yeah if they are fit get them to bring their bikini's along then we can do the "thunder (the best one) of supra's" justice with the photos!!

I will just bring my inflatable......shes very flexible !!

mawby
13-06-03, 10:31
I always found the same, loads of meets but never any that close to me. So I thought to myself, why not organise one. So I did! :D And besides, I've been off work all week ill and I was desperate to find something to do to stop me going mad... :looney:

As for somewhere scenic and picturesque, I totally agree. :gallery: There are several very scenic car parks along the coast ideal for taking some pics, the only draw back this time of year is they charge to get in to some of them, but it's hardly anything.

Yep, I see no problem with gf's comming.... hehehe (sorry) :innocent: I'll be bringing mine if shes not working. If they like nice cars then they'll enjoy it as much as the rest of us, and you can even try and score some brownie points by saying your taking her out for a nice Sunday meal! Ummm.. a car park full of Supras... Supras full of gorgeous bikini clad babes! I'll have to make sure my digi camara is fully charged! :D

I will come on the 20th

if im back form silverstone the British GP is on that weekend and I have a free ticket for friday

it would be better in june or august as july is very packed

with france 12/13 and billing 25 to 27 billing is in northampton if you have a supra you should go as there are 92 supras going so far

I think a local meet is a very good idea a should be done regular every 4 to 6 weeks

If all goes well with this meet then there's nothing stopping me/us organising another one late August or early September. I'd be up for a regular local meet. If Boxhill is this Saturday then unfortunately I will not be attending, have a wedding reception to goto and as my mate lives in Finland I'd better attend.

Good news people,

Dont know if you wre aware but went through this whole saga of my wheels and damaging my veilside kit !!

Well he sent those wheels down as requested, gonna sell the old wheels and tyres to a MR2 or something, then buy the right set ie 265 on rear 235 on front !!

But for the minute have the 245's all round, I didnt realise how much of a difference it would make car feels so solid now

Anyway am telling you all this so it will now be ship-shape for the meet, as the veilside has been repaired too !!

Looking forward to it shammone !!!

I live about 5~10 minutes drive away from the pub, so I'll aim to get there for opening (which I believe is 10am on Sundays, but I'll check) and I'll keep a watch out for any of you guys driving past. I suppose it's just turn up when you want to, but if it is hot and sunny then the areas going to get very busy around mid-day, so I'd recommend people getting there before 11am so we all get a parking space in the pub car park. Once there we can decide what to do next.

If anyone needs directions then please refer to an earlier post I did which included links to some detailed maps of how to get there from the motorway.

I need an incentive to get my (probable) hung over body out of bed and to this meet so here goes.

Just been talking with JohnK on MSN and we're thinking about going to the meet in convoy and was wondering if anyone else from the Soton area would care to join?

Thinking about meeting at the Sainsburys car park at Hedgend (Junction 7 - M27).

Aiming to get down there for about 11am so meet in car park (behind the petrol station) at about 10am? :conf:

Does this sound ok or is that gonna be waaaay too early?

Good point, I'm gonna be at a loose end all day, as in recovery mode :) will also want to get some food so will be at least eating down there.

Plus pictures which could take a while and at this point I'm rambling so ....... I'll stop :innocent:

Depends on what everyone else is upto as well.

mawby
14-07-03, 16:33
It really depends on what everyone wants to do on the day. We could quite easily spend a few hours down the pub looking over the cars, a few drinks and a spot of lunch.

Then the general concensus is to go and get some decent photos taken. The beach would be an ideal place, but finding a car park down there empty enough for all of us to park next to one another will probably be wishfull thinking.

We may have to try a couple of carparks before we find a suitable one, but then a convoy of Supra's down by the beach is going to look smart and will definitely attract the attention of the "young ladies" down there, which will make the driving around worth while for those of us who's other halfs can't make it. :innocent:

Right, now I have to apologise to everyone as I've just phoned the pub and they don't open 'till 12 on Sundays. Yes I know, I should have checked earlier, but I was sooooo positive it opened at 10. :banghead: So we have two choices, either...

1) I quickly phone around and find another local pub that does open at ten and rearrange it for there, or

2) We turn up there anyway and then choose what to do, besides giving me a well deserved kicking! :twak:

It's up to you lot, but I'll start phoning around now. :)

So I propose another option, we still go to The Old Ship but aim to get there for after 11. That way we're not hanging around too long before the pub opens. That gives us a chance to look around the motors, go get an ice cream or take some photos. I'll even get the ice creams in, how about that! :D

We could hook up just after Petersfield and travel to the meet together from there.

Just to warn you all that although there are no permanent speed cameras on the routes I've plotted, it's not unheard of for speed traps be set-up in the area, especially along the sea front at this time of year - so keep your eyes peeled! ;)

That's okay, I put the radar detector into the car today ;)

Alright, I'm going to TRY and make it to the pub by 11am, shouldn't be any later than 12 if I am.

I drove 520 miles today (to the Welsh west coast and back:)) and it's starting to get a bit late and I'm quite knackered, so I'll go to sleep now and attempt to make it out in the morning :)

If you guys move on from the specified pub, can one of you throw me a text message?

cheers :)

Well cheers to everyone who turned up. The turn-out was better than I expected and I don't think we could have asked for better weather in the end. (Although my face, arms and neck all seem to be a lot redder than when I left home this morning! )

The convoy of Supra's leaving the pub for the beach looked brilliant in my mirrors. How many people had to look twice, three times, infact 10 times as we drove past them! :D

I've uploaded the few photo's I took onto my website here (http://www.lee-mawby.net/MonAlbum/index.php?id_rub=12).

Anyway, thanks again to everyone for comming. I'll get the ball rolling for the next meet down here soon if enough people are up for it. Like before I'll try and give people plenty of notice, and the suggestion of a bar-b-q next time also seems like a good idea.

Great to meet everyone and also great to put names to faces

A great turnout, great cars and great weather! I too am feeling a little bit :flame Dev round the back of my neck and face :D

Great convoy back when we left, also bumped into Sean Doyle who you flashed Mawby as we came round the corner, he met us at the Shell station.

He'd been to a gig in London the night before and didn't get in till 6am! He was a bit disappointed but I think he'll be there for the next one.

I'll get my photos uploaded onto my site tomorrow.

Yeah we could do it somewhere like Queen Elizabeth Country Park, or Victoria Country Park at Netley (as long as I get my jabs first:p )

Here's (http://www.duncandriver.btinternet.co.uk/Supra/Hants.Meet.20JUL03/) a few compressed pics that'll hopefully be friendly to folks on dial-up.

Yeah, was a shame Sean was late, but good to have met him (would've sucked if he was maybe 3 minutes later, we'd have missed him).

Nice to meet all of you, and had a great time chatting :) I'm definitely up for another one, especially if the weather is as good as today. I'm going to have a nice tan from today :)

I'll have my pictures online shortly (some 45 of them I think..), as soon as I drag them off my camera.

My choice would be the Royal Victoria Country Park (http://www.hants.gov.uk/countryside/rvcp/) mainly because there web site has a lot more information than the Queen Elizabeth Country Park (http://www.hants.gov.uk/countryside/qecp/) one, including prices for Bar-b-q's which is...

The park has three barbecues for hire. Two large ones which cater for up to 100 people and one small one which caters for up to 25 people.

Barbecues may be booked throughout the summer. Each barbecue is available for two sessions a day: 11am - 5pm and 6pm - 11pm.

The large BBQs are available for hire at £40 each per session. Small BBQs are £20. This hire charge includes the BBQ, seating, car parking and toilet facilities. It does not include food and charcoal.

For more information, please contact the park office 023 8045 5157.

As something like this needs to be booked in advance, we might want to get this organised sooner rather than later. At least I've found out what time they open before the day before! :D

Doh, well I only stopped because I wanted some fags, p00t pulled up next to a pump and by the time I got out of the shop Sean had pulled up, didn't have your number so couldn't tell you to stop.

We also saw another Silver supra pass us as we were talking, not sure if it was anyone from the meet though?

Ah well, next time should be even better :)

the barbecue idea at Victoria Country Park looks good

what time do you think
11am - 5pm or 6pm - 11pm

mawby
21-07-03, 17:51
Certainly will do. I'll put down both the 17th and 24th and we'll go with which ever is best for the most people, if that's alright?

I'll also check to make sure no other big events are happening on these days.

As for the starting time, I'd say 10am sounds good... I'll get me coat! :D Seriously though, given it's a Sunday and alot of people will have work Monday morning (including me!) I think going during the day would be more suited than the evening.

Nice pics mate :) Mine will be a bit longer coming as I'm really quite a lazy bastard and all that number plate removal looks like hard work.. they're basically the same as everybody else's anyway, except I got each car from the front and back as well (hence plate removal nightmare).

I'll get to it soon enough.

As for the bbq meet, I'm definitely up for this. My girlfriend should be over from the states during the mentioned periods in August, however I'm sure she'd be up for a bbq somewhere nice.

Haha....yeah that was extremely embarrasing, sorry about that! :conf:

Surprised you didn't :twak: me for just casually reaching into your car, opening your centre console storage area and just picking you camera up to use :innocent:

I thought the plate removal was going to be a nightmare but my mate at work told me how to do it fairly quickly in photoshop. Use the outline tool and then goto Filter > Blur > Guasian Blur and then just adjust the amount of blur you want :)

Cheers Thorin :D

It's only taken me about 5 days of not doing anything at work but just working on that to get to what I like. Going on the Dreamweaver course certainly kick started that all off :)

Must say a big thanks to my mate Ben who's done all the sorting of the graphics
