View Full Version : IT / Server question...
Just having a discussion here at work with a mate and neither of have a clue about servers and how they work with the internet. Can anyone tell us what would be involved in setting up a web site in a similar vein to youtube? We were just wondering what you would need in they way of servers, is it something that could be set up in your bedroom or would you need to rent servers up in London for instance, how do you get an internet connnection fast enough to handle it.. who knows? I dont thats for sure...:search:
LOTS and lots of bandwidth, localised server points, distributed load, clusters... yada yada..
Yup as pete said, LOTS AND LOTS of bandwidth...and diskspace...
Youtube works in a very simple way, but requires a lot of backend processing power..
1. All movies are loaded up to a queue.
2. A free server grabs the video off the queue and converts it into a flash movie using some software.
3. Once conversion has taken place it puts it onto the webserver.
However, since Youtube has already grabbed the market place, I personally wouldn't look at getting into this section of the market.
It is like taking google on with a new search engine... it has to be something VERY good to knock off the market leader.
On the video side, there are plenty of movie sites,
VideoGoogle
YouTube
StreetFire
Putfile (in a different method)
.....
Thanks for the info, think we'll try and find something else to make our millions... :)
