I thought I'd post up some pics of our RX7 time attack car we are currently building. Its at the beginning of its build, only started it Tuesday, I'll be posting up new pics as we go. Waiting for a few bits to show up so its off to the bodyshop next week to be painted, got to get it all up and running in a months time for testing!

Your right there, put the power down well dont they, very light as well, be interesting to see how much this car weighs when its finished. Has anyone ever tried to remove sound proofing? Its a right arsehole of a job I can tell you, gonna get some dry ice for it to see if that shifts it.
I'd actually love to have an RX7. You don't see many about, they are light and quick too but I worry about the running costs. I've read some real horror stories.

imo some of the horror stories are unjust, i use my t88 when ever i can and always trash it (hey its 500bhp) i do look after it but check oil before i start it and let it warm up for 10 minutes lol, rx7 when modded take a while to warm up when first started and it must be done once u have had a blast with the car re -top the oil as they do burn it on spirited drives.... the main problem imo is they are not looked after properly and blow up due to coolant problems or lack of oil, if you keep on top of those and your car is mapped to uk fuel it will be fine :)
Oooo subscribed to this. Good luck with the build Paul.

what sort of set up you going to use on it ??
GT4288 roller bearing turbo, ported engine, 1600cc injectors, Power FC, water injection, big front mount IC, 1.5 bar boost, it'll be a flyer especially with the low weight we are aiming for. Need to get some perspex glass from somewhere, cant seem to find any though at the mo.

Also I've noticed a lot of the cars coming over from Japan are at the mileage where a rebuild is needed, that is one of the main problems with them. If the engine has good compression your laughing.

yep and also there is a load of shite of fd3s come over which then are sold for peanuts as buyers are not aware which then makes the nice rx7s look mega expensive
I love RX7's anyone got a nice clean one they wanna swap for my Supra?

had an rx7 fd3s and loved it no probs at all :) looking forword to seeing your when its finished
i had one for a year too and had no problems what so ever was amazing i absolutely loved it :)fast and light, handling was immense near enough 50/50 weight distribution and double wishbone forks in the dry it was awesome round corners, in the wet it was hairier than a german ladys armpits!
i have one, wanted a tt manual supe before i got mine, got it by accident - parked next to a poor example supe i went to see and couldnt reisist.
most horror stories i think is due to poeple buying without any knowlesge of the cars then getting burned. Generally excellent cars light mine is 1200kgs with 300hp balanced 50/50 as standard i beleieve and engine is behind the front wheels wich means excellent handling without all that tyre squeal. All does need to be in sync for them to run well but when they are right they are great!
im looking to buy a supe at the end of this year i think purely because i dont want to make my rex more comfortable and more car like than race like but i do need a more day to day car that is just that bit less race car like and more space etc. plus i have always wanted one and i am just still hooked!
a friend of mine - supro on the forum has one and i love it! also absxxx
anyway looking forward to seeing this project complete good luck guys!
Very nice FC that is.
That is one big problem with the rotary lumps, they sound pretty shit, sound a bit hedge trimmer ish to me!
that is one of the best fc s i have ever seen, to my taste too!
hopefully in the next year or so i will have a bpu supe as an everyday car and the rex for a weekend toy;)
in the wet it was hairier than a german ladys armpits!

I love the rex, think its more suited to the Uk roads too.

Paul. I will ask a friend, he took all the sound deadening material out of a RX7, the most stripped out road car I have ever been in.
Awesome acceleration on slicks.

I would 2nd that Sir!;)
Great too see another rx7 being build for the right use!
Sounds like there will be a few of us in Time Attack this year running RX7s
What spec have you built the engine too Paul? Were tempted to go 20b then :D
Paul Whiffin
23-01-07, 20:55
The engine itself is standard for the moment, we've got another fully ported engine being put together at the moment though so that'll go in pretty soon.
What sort of figures are you hoping for once you move to the ported engine... i take it that will be running uprated 3mm seals and solid corners seals etc
Paul Whiffin
23-01-07, 21:06
The full works yes, not sure on figures really, not really going for out and out horsepower, we want it to be useable as well, depends a bit on how much boost we run and what type of fuel. Waiting to hear back from a fuel supplier on supplying us....

How did you cope with their noise limit Paul? my car was 4db over but they were ok about it :)
Its pretty quiet actually! Probably about 95db max I'd say, thats with the external wastegate plumbed back into the exhaust though, we'll remove that for the weekend so we can make some noise!
Nope it had a bit of a front ender, complete right off in fact!
NOOOOO!!! Seriously?

:d
nice work there :) its good to see you getting the job done to meet the regs and then testing ASAP!,
just something i noticed was you have left out the inner arch liners and undertrays from the engine bay and bumpers these comprise a critical part of the Areo dynamics of the car and should be replaced as does all the ducting to the standard intercoolers and radiator, air, as any fluid will take the easyiest path and so any gaps around the intercooler and rad will just build up high pressure in the bumper and bay, and reduce cooling flow, as the undertrays are left out it will exit from under the car and can even create lift!
idealy if you can duct the rad and IC and then create an exit duct up through the bonnet (into the low pressure region above the car) you may even gain some negative lift
fitting a splitter (just a tray sealed to the front bumper and all the way to the back of the engine bay)
and a flat floor and diffuser which should just need another tray from in front of the Rear supension sealed to the floor pan and all the way back to seal with the bottom of the rear bumper
would yield awsome results
my final year project in aero dynamics was on race car Aero and we tested hundreds of scale modles in the wind tunnle the simple effects of these few part (whcih hardly cost any thing just a bit of fabrication time) was unbelievable
from checking out the other competitors cars briefly i reckon you could be a serious contender just with sorted AERO! we also had a TVR race car in the tunnle for a full aero design tht went back to dominate its class, most people dont believe just how effective it is, and the required modifications are well documented now
Also for removing weight AT least cut out the inner door skins, you can use toggles and cords to opperate the door handles (like in the F40) but there is much more to lose still
ARMARI plastics in harlsden N london suplies me polycarbonate in all different thicknesses to replace your glass with too
sorrry for the rant but I see the time atack series as an easy win for a team using just some simple race tech and it might as well be YOU!;)

Thanks for the post, we're pretty much going to do all that stuff to the car as we develop it anyway, just takes a bit of time to do all this stuff. I'm sure we'll get there though. We've got a few things to try out next time out, testing at Bedford on Tuesday evening, hopefully everything will work!
Bedford... as in the Bedford of Bedfordshire. Holy crap, I live sooo close to it. Where will you be running it?
(as in, where in Bedford?)
