Yes I have thought about one of these as well.I have got a TV tuner on my monitor but the picture is'nt very good so I thought going digital would be a better pic.

Unless you're very near to a transmitter then I think you will have problems with the signal. You will need a big or a small amplified aerial - That's the problem with freeview

Cheers.

Just found this Pioneer, it seems like its optimised for Incar use but its very expensive..Have seen it somewhere for £350 incl VAT.

Thats seriously expensive

I got given a Bluetooth unit to go with my AVIC Sat Nav and it dosn't work with my unit so going to trade it in to get the Pioneer freeview box me thinks, yeah bit expensive but its optimised for mobile use diversity antenna system etc, the cheaper units dont have that facility and cheapest i can find is £350 incl vat, works in Europe too but will only pick up forign speaking stations.

Been trying to find a coverage map for the UK without success. I used to have an Alpine Anologue reciever once and tbh it worked quite well (again it had a diversity antenna system) I think the diference in cost reflects the fact that the more expensive models have the diversity system i might be wrong.

Just love the idea of being able to watch Sky News in a traffic jam ha ha....stupid i know, bit over the top....ill let ya know how i get on, if anyone finds the Pioneer system cheaper PLEASE let me know lol..it is bit expensive...but list they are £499. doh

Any other ideas welcome lol (as long as they are not eh..why not buy a newspaper ha ha its cheaper lol!):search:

I know there is probably a good reason why but is there any reason why you cant use a normal home freeview box and power it up through a 240/12v power invertor. The only problem I can see is the scart socket?

I had TV tuner/monitor in my last car and I bought proper TV car antenna with built in amplifier that had to be powered up,and it was a complete waste of time as well.I would of been better off holding the aerial lead in my hand and putting my hand in the air.I was just thinking that if I am pulling signal through same aerial in digital form rather than analogue then the signal will be stronger and clearer.Anybody know?

When i had my Alpine Tuner installed with Diversity Antenna system it worked a treat, the antennas were actually inside the car on the insides of the windows.

I was told it would be shit...but tbh it worked extremely well considering, Obviously if you parked up you would sometimes need to move back or fourth a few inches to get best reception.

on a journey whilst battling though a traffic jam i would often have it on for news etc and again it was acceptable...but in all honesty i used it mostly when parked up, like if i had to wait in the car for some reason..!

You would think that in most cases a digital signal would improve things, but i guess pictures will pixelate rather than phase in and out...so in some ways this may be worse, im willing to give it a go though because i rekon it will work a treat...(i could be wrong lol)

I think the trick is the antenna...a technical person will be along shortly to explain how it works but I think it works basically by having a horizontally and vertically polorized antenna and when one phases out it automatically switches to the other one..so you always have a choice of two attempts at getting a signal and it will automatically switch to the more succesful reception...am i right? not sure lol..but summit like that!

Yes I have heard the Alpine antenna are very good and well worth the money. If this is the case and I know they work well then I dont mind spending the money.Anybody willing to be a guinea pig?

It looks like a Diversity Antenna, I have no idea if the DVB/Freeview system works very well mobile, but i know the analogue System with Diversity antennas worked though ya can't normally go wrong with Alpine.

Im going to give the Pioneer System a go me thinks but it will take a few days to get the money back on the Bluetooth unit first and then go for the tuner then get it rigged up in the car...I dont mind being the tester, but it'll take me a couple of weeks to sort it all out get money back etc...Im sure they will be equal qaulity...Pioneer and Alpine are pretty much the same qaulity wise i guess...cant seem to find anyone whos had this done..or how well it works so yeah

The only other thing we could do Si is get a Sky reciever fitted with a rooftop tracking satellite antenna he he...:d

Na if i did this in my road the end result would be catastrophic, the neighbours would win, they already have done on the Christmas lights, fireworks...Mondeos with Satellite domes twitching, TSW wheels, and chrome coat hangers in the back...could catch on..! (oh shit just looked outside...it has lol)

We better rethink the gameplan:d
