A few weeks ago one of my rear teeth was giving me real grief so I managed to get mysely in at a NHS one 12miles from home. My appointment was today and I must admit I was really crapping it, sweating feeling faint the lot as I have a big fear and have not been since I was 15 and that was 20 years ago. Anyway the outcome is that I need two fillings and the tooth that was giving me trouble needs a root canal or I can have it pulled. Anyone had a root canal and what is it like?

I have had root canal treatment it is nothing I never felt a thing, it was deep too, however I would get it pulled, as now the tooth that has the canal treatment is causing me problems it becomes loose from time to time and its painful to bite, do not fart about with canal treatment get rid.

I'm with Mark on that one. I had the same choice about 10 years ago and at 22 i didn't want to loose a tooth.

My mum said she's had route canal treatment and that it had hurt and then she had to have tooth out eventually after spending a fortune.!!

Pull it out!!!

Not a problem. Dentists don't worry me at all, I had a canal filled about 4 years ago, never had a problem since. You won't (shouldn't...) feel a thing.

If you've got enough other teeth around it then get it pulled;)

I've had the same situation were i've spent a fortune with route canal treatment only to had the bugger give me pain and fall apart later.

No fillings at all here. I even went 15 years between dentist visits and all he could find was that they needed a bit of polishing.

I blame all the sweets I eat.

How many sessions are they doing the root canal over?

Ive had a few, one hurt but that was done in one go as an emergency, the others over 2 visits were fine.

Looking at it financially, extraction, what? £40?

Root canal work, several long appointments costing ££££ss, course they're going to advise you to have the canal treatment.

Private my last root canal, about a 2 years ago, was less than £300

I never used to mind the Dentist, but since I've grown up they cant get a decent injection into wherever it is they need to inject. Sometimes the injection works, sometimes not. I don't know until it hurts.

I dread having so much as a filling, I'll be on the edge of my seat just waiting for the pain to strike! :(

I was lucky enough to get in as a NHS patient and have paid £42 for the 2 fillings and root canal, not sure about how many sessions

if it has an abcess its better to xtract. the prognosis is decreased to 50% or below as soon as theirs an abcess underneath. If it has an abcess underneath it needs draining in one way or another and to wait till feb 2nd is too long.
if you have an xray and want me to give an opinion for you let me know.
and yes i am a dentist im the 3rd one down in the team section ;)

Thanks but I dont have the xray, I thought to give me a course of antibiotics then to have to wait a month was a bit over the top, the guy I saw was quite old so I may ring back next week and ask to see someone else

Root canal work, several long appointments costing ££££ss, course they're going to advise you to have the canal treatment.

Under the current NHS contract terms the cost of an extraction and root canal treatment is exactly the same as the both fall in band 2 treatment. There are currently three main bands of treatment and charges in the NHS:Band 1 -Includes a checkup and clean and polish and any diagnostic procedures like xrays. This costs £15.50.Then we have Band 2.This may include your checkup if it was due,as many xrays as necessary, all extractions as necessary, all fillings as necessary, all root canal treatments as necessary and if needed a clean and polish, all inclusive. This cost only £42 and a few pence. When you have this treatment finished and you need any treatment in the same band,ie band 2 this should be done free of charge if you need this further treatment within two months of the previous course. The top band is band3.This covers dentures, bridges, crowns, veneers etc.The charge for this band is £189.For this fee you may get as many items under band 3 as necessary, but also covers the lower band 2 treatment. The two month period for any further treatment also applies and there normally is a free replacement period of 12 months for any NHS treatment done, but this excludes veneers and dentures. However, there is a charge of £15.50 which can be levied for any emergency appointment to the dentist. This charge is not affected by any of the terms mentioned above.Sorry for the long post, but I thought this would be of help to members...and yes,I am another gob doctor:p

Well I had the root canal last friday. Painless like everyone said but really think now I should have had it pulled out as saturday all my jaw swelled up so went back on monday for more antibiotics then yesterday a chunk of the tooth fell off whilst brushing them.
