Everyone me included, sometimes gets irate when peeps don't use the search option.

But I have found that sometimes, it just doesn't give you what your looking for. Then straight away another member will post the thread you just spent 20 mins searching for.

Anyone got any tips to get the most out of the search engine.

Cheers

Si

i sit and search, but if you use the wrong keyword then you will never find what you are looking for. :(

I use as few keywords as possible, then when/if i find a similar thread i read it and see what words were used in there, and then search on those words too..

I've often asked Mawby if there is a plug-in that will give a weighting to the results and show them by relevance or other criteria.

For example, searching for 'spark plugs' would bring up Alex's FAQ at the top and at the bottom a thread where someone mention they once had an amusing encounter with a butt plug.

One day maybe....

I'm sure I replied last time this was mentioned saying that the forum can do that already. Do an advanced search and change the "Sort Results by" option to be "Relevancy"

If you're looking for a phrase or two words together use speech marks.

ie "tyre pressure"

That doesn't work properly on this forum engine. It turns it into "tyre, pressure" - searching for tyre and pressure as separate words.

The search engine on vBulletin is shite. Numerous times on various sites it's proved to be a PITA.

Phrases would be easy enough to do I'd have thought.

Well more fool you for not sorting them into folders at the outset. :D

Folders  it's a full time job just answering them

Okay clever clogs, any suggestions for folders to put them in? Alphabetical, date, pm subject, part? It's only rarely that I need to refer back to an old pm, I think the folders thing would take me more time managing than it would save me. :)

I would probably put them in Alphabetical by client/customer name/user name.

Then you can easily locate them.

Management would only take a few minutes per week maybe - then you can have one for 'finished jobs' etc.

Would you like me to come and do it for you? :)
