Building boxes for inverted subs is actually easier as you don't need to take into account the size of the sub magnet when working out the volume of the box. As far as I know you don't lose any sound quality, and you can use whatever type of box you please :)

Hia Hulse,
i went to a ice specialist and asked the same question, i was told only certain subs are made to be inverted, and it makes no difference to the size of the enclosure because the air and sound come from the back any way. the only problem i found was that specificaly designed speakers for revese fit are more expensive than normal speakers:( but i did notice quite a conciderable difference in quality.:(
i supposoe its the old adage " you get what you pay for "
i dont know about certain types only been able to run inverted, ive ran a few subs this way, the only thing to take note of is that you need to reverse the polarity of the speaker so that it "booms" into the box rather than the air "behind" it
i was thinking about this especially after seeing the audiobahn subs, they look awesome inverted

they sure do, when inverting subs the sub will use the whole boot space as an enclosure, so will sound great till you open the boot and loose the space. My old install as below is now all gone and new one is one its way, 2x 8" AB subs and 1x 10" AB sub all reverse mounted, head unti even has a setting on it for inverted subs so reverves the polarity for you..!!

Make sure that the opening for the box clears the subwoofers excursion range, some subs have a large excursion when being pushed hard and you don't want the box to interfere with that.

Easy way round that is to make the box the recommended size for the sub normally mounted, then you should have no probs. Also handy if you get bored of the bling look, just turn the subs round and whole new look to your install. I am currently working on another AudioBahn install for my mates 206, will look awesome when its done, might get a few pics up later.
