BPU Question

I think im going to go BPU in the next month or two but I was wondering how many of you guys are BPU with the standard jap fuel pump?

I was for ages, until I put my car on a dyno and saw how lean it was running. A new Walbro improved things a lot.

I wouldn't take the risk personally for the sake of £80-100

but I did run for a few weeks at bpu on the stock pump, but I didn't push it hard much, only to test it made the boost

get a pump, it's piece of mind worth having imho

Yeah that £100 for a non-popped engine to support an extra 50-75 bhp aint a bad deal.

I've been BPU for a year with stock pump, running 1.2 bar, with no problems at all! I WILL get round to changing it soon though cos it's better to do so before problems occur than after

So is it a better idea to install a walbro first before I change the exhaust and full decat? Will it run fine stock with a walbro or will it run rich?

Yes, you should install the walbro first, it will run fine in stock form.

The pump could flow 100x the stock capacity and it wouldn't overfuel. The fuel pressure is controlled by the fuel pressure regulator, not the pump.

So how do you figure that one out then?

My point is, just to elaborate that it would be a good idea to put a fresh high flow walbro pump in to replace the tired old stock fuel pump, which may not be as effective as when it left the factory, which in turn runs the risk that you may run lean...

As for the issue of whether it runs rich or not with a walbro in, I'd say it does (but thats just a guess... )

Mines been fine for months now on the walbro. I'm planning on BPU after it's MOT in April so thought doing this and getting a boost gauge too beforehand.

Oh and the old pump strainer come out brown along with the old fuel filter. It's good to change that too.

Shouldnt do no. I dont think you'd run that rich to risk bore wash or anything nasty like that

ok I done a search on how to fit a walbro. Am I right in that you have to cut the wires inside the fuel tank? Is that not dangerous?

You don't actually cut them IN the tank. The whole thing lifts out, then you'll need to cut/solder/heat shrink them back together as the plugs for the standard pump and the walbro are different.
