View Full Version : traction control problem
Hi.
I don't know if this is something to worry about. I tried to search and found a few things but nothing sounding the same.
My girlfriend was setting off from some lights and moving from 2nd to 3rd (j spec TT six speed) she felt a slight wheel spin and the traction control came on.
The slip control light stayed on and the car had no power from then on.
She drove it home and when I started it again it seemed fine.
No warning lights and the traction control was off again.
Any ideas?
I have not checked for error codes. Should I just leave it and see if it happens again?
Don't want to damage anything.
Cheers.

No, sadly thats normal :(
ok so just down to the shit traction control?
cheers
just read what I had written and I don't think I explained very well. The light stayed on with the loss of power for the 3 miles she drove home.
I have felt the traction control before, it usually flashes and cuts power for a small amount of time not 3 miles.
she said it felt like the diesel golf! (power wise).

If i am not mistaken, the traction control needs you to attain a certain rev point to switch itself off (unless you reset it via the dash button).
It is likely perhaps that in the 3 miles she didnt get to the required rev point.
Yep most supe owners switch it off before they set off as it cuts the power after losing traction normally when you most need it.
The stock traction controll is funny, I love to see it go into "snow" when I put my foot down.
Remember the first rule when you get into the supra and turn her on... turn the TC off! :)
ok.
Just seemed strange as we have had the car for a while and this has never happened before.
She has been using the traction control recently because the roads are all wet.
I have read on here how crap it is and experienced it myself.
Cheers for advice.

My J spec TT did that aswell! The traction control cut the power and the light stayed on but when i turned it off with the switch and turned it back on i was back to full power. The traction control really is crap!
There is a Racelogic traction control group buy on at the moment. Get that fitted and just turn off the stock system whenever you start the car.
IS the stock system really that bad?? I was sure it had saved my back end from squirming about a few times?
I admit it is annoying when it kicks in and stays on. I usually just press it off and on again.
How mad is the supra to control in the rain etc with no traction control?
Stock TC is like when the Americans turned up late to WW2 and claimed they saved the day.

If you drive sensibly and have good tyres it's no trouble at all in the rain.
how do you remove the stock system then? just remove the fuse??

The standard version really is sh*t.I've now got Racelogic fitted by Chris Wilson and it really is the bolloc*ks.
haha sounds familiar. Mine did exactly this and left me trying to file onto a dual carrage way from a slip road with no power - it was the first time it happened and I thought something had broken - it was quite dangerous. I'd just been booting it and it did a massive backfire when it cut the power, must have scared the life out of the people I'd overtaken.
Not only was the continued loss of power more dangerous than the original wheel spin, I know what part of the road caused it. There is a dip in the road and the car goes light, I was flat out and so it did a momentary spin and then as the weight came back on the wheels it was fine. I knew and was expecting it, TC did nothing at the point it happened, it actually kicked in about another 100 yards down the road ater the dip, just as I finsihed overtaking a car (luckily) and was about to file on...
anyway, suffice to say that was the 1st and last dodgy experience with stock TC of that nature. I switched it off from then on and fitted RLTC as soon as I could, never looked back since, the two systems arn't even comparible at all - get it!
so how you turn it off then?? without buying rltc

press the traction control button and a light will show up on the dashboard that it has been disabled.
sorry, I meant that I would switch it off everytime I started a journey, with the switch on the lower centre dash...
I believe that you can disable it by removing the TRAC fuse. You could even remove the whole TRAC unit (that is what you do when you fit rltc, it is under the passenger footwell by the main ECU) - the existing box is removed as the scrap piece of junk it is lol
Press the off button or if you have a manual car you can pull the TRAC fuse and even remove the TRAC butterfly gubbins.
Don't do it on an auto though. You'll get seriously clunky gear changes and eventually knacker the box.
no light comes on when i press mine in lol
should i remove the fuse then?

It should show up in yellow at the top right of your dash.

if it is a manual I'd be tempted to remove the fuse and then save up for rltc, it really is worth every penny imho - saves on rear tyre wear too ;)

Good thinking,i've got 285 rears that stood me at 410.Had them on for about 6000miles and now they're ready for changing again.
its an auto and no light comes on???

bump. I'm getting this too. Uk auto, traction control is working fine (I know because I've got a new set of tyres waiting to be put on once the old ones are properly worn) but the TC button isn't working.
Checked it was connected properly today by pulling the dash forward and it must have registered something because when I put the car in D after that it lurched forward.
But no... however I push that button, car in park D, footbrake on/off, before starting the car it won't disable the TC. I'm certain it worked when I bought the car though!
Mine works, green light sometimes stays on, I just flick the switch, when its off, have orange light on.
Its crap anyway though. RLTC is in order after my single tubby me thinks
My understanding is the traction control cuts in and keeps the power off when it detects excessive loss of traction.
If you lose traction briefly the unit will kick in but resume normal power once you get back some grip. If you boot it and the wheels spin like a top then it goes into `snow mode` and drops the power to that of a 'Lada Riva' until the TC is re-set ;0)

OK... so a couple of days ago I found a nasty speed breaker, that when wet allowed me to spin the wheels (like a rolling road) and hence test the TC. So, the TC would kick in as expected, but when I flicked the switch, the TC would turn off and let the wheels spin nice and freely. Hence, it was turning off, just the lights weren't showing up.
Today, flicked the TC switch and knocked the dash a couple of times and the light was coming on. Just took the top bit of the dash, checked everything and noticed one set of wires had been trapped somewhere and pinched. Cleared that, wrapped some insulating tape around it and re-assembled the cluster before putting everything back together.
It's all working now and I guess I have been fairly lucky as the diff oil, engine oil and engine warning light were in the same cluster as well. Don't know how long the whole thing has been out.
