just trying to change to greddy 60mm mechanical gauge, does this just use standard 0 and 12v as after disconnecting old hks one the new gauge will not light up. Do they use some bizarre wiring or did supradibbs sell me a gauge that dont light up?

Should be an easy 'link up and go' job. Did you test the backlight before installing it mucka? What gauge is it?

black face 60mm mechanical, bought off of supradibbs in good faith a month or so ago, only just got round to fitting it.
Should i have continuity through the illumination circuit?

The back light should be connected to an ignition active circuit so it lights up as soon as you turn the key. In principle, all gauges work the same but the different manufacturers do have different wire colours for ignition and permanent circuits etc.
It could be a simple issue of having a dry solder disconnect. Take the back off and check the circuit - its easy to follow once you've identified the initial +ve and -ve inputs.
