First turbo not working ??

Just got my TT 1996 pre facelift 43k

I am a bit concerned as I cannot hear any turbo whistle coming from the first turbo at aroung 1500 revs:( :(

Once I rev to around 4k revs I can hear the slight turbo whistle them but nothing below.

The other thing is that other than back box, which seems to spread down most of the car, well the garage said it was only a back box , could be a full system as it ends about under the centre console ,,,, its standard, I have read on this forum that the transition from the 1st turbo to the 2nd shouldnt be that noticable. Well its is quite noticable on mine , there is a big power surge at 4k, could this be a sign that the 1st turbo isnt boosting as it should.??

Is there any way of checking??

Any ideas folks ???:( :( :(

from your description it sounds like the turbos are running in parallel, rather than standard sequential operation. This is a fairly common modification that is done either by modifying the wiring or vacuum hoses.

A full system would be from the manifold back, most exhausts for the Supra are cat back, ie. from the second cat backwards, the second cat finishes underneath the centre console.

If you have a standard air box it's unlikely you would hear the first turbo, plus if it is running in TTC as Nic mentioned you'd have almost no 'real' power below 3k, is this the case? do you have a boost gauge?, tbh even in stock form you can feel the 2nd turbo coming on, and when bpu(fully decatted with supporting mods) it's a huge kick, another thing, I've never read of the 1st turbo ever failing, it's almost always the 2nd :) but it does sound like it's in ttc, if you post up a pic of your engine bay, turbo side near to the firewall this will help.
