View Full Version : Supra Replacement, suggestions?
Right guys.
i need something that's more practical (strapping kayaks on top of and mountain bikes in or on the back).
i need something that's not extortionate to fix if it goes wrong.
i need somthing fairly economical so if a larger car i'm thinking a diesel.
lastly i want it all for £250.
just kidding, between £3-4k is the target :d
cheers folks

Volvo estate?
did think about that one. not the prettiest though, what's the engines like in them?
Subaru Legacy Estate - you can pick up the turbo ones for peanuts and spend the savings made on the fuel it will use ;)

hmmmm.
heart says yes! but head says no :(
expensive to service / fix?
very low mpg?
would also prefer something 'normal' so i'm not getting raped for insurance please :d

Expensive all round apart from the actual buying of them :(

bugger.
i'm liking Thorin's suggestion of a volvo estate but i can't help thinking T5 :flame:
dammit.
Mitsubishi pajero/shogun 2.5 diesel.

hmmmmm.
still not cheap to fix if it goes wrong though are they? (don't know much about them)
what sort of mpg do you get out of one?

Just had a look on the net at them.
don't look bad but would be overkill for what i need to be honest.
*prepares to be made fun of*
what does anyone think about a Vectra SRI DTI?
How about an old diesel merc estate? Should run and run....
How about an old diesel merc estate? Should run and run....
funnily enough i had considered one of these and was looking on the old autotrader last night at them.
the engines sound fine to me and insurance is cheap cheap but what worries me is they're apparently prone to rust?
anyone know if this is the case?
i'm assuming that's why you see a lot of the older ones with those stupid chrome arch covers on.
Toyota Hilux Pick Up a-la top gear. 1000's of gun toting insurgents can't be wrong.
If you need a back seat then Nissan Terrano/Ford Maverick are the same car so there are btis for those. The Shogun has been around donkey's years now too so plenty in pieces for cannabilisation if it goes wrong.

You should be able to find a sound example of the earlier W124 E-Class. They have the reputation of being among the best-built Mercs ever, although that doesn't mean they are all good. Mercedes parts prices are as amusing as Toyota/Lexus prices, but at least you don't have to buy them from main dealers.
May be out of your price range anyway, but watch out for the W210 (the one with the twin oval headlights). There were a lot of rust problems with those. Any Mercedes forum will have plenty of threads about it.

cheers Gareth.
the E-class is a little big for what i'm wanting to be honest but i thought the C-class is perfect.
will have a hunt on the merc forums later.
cheers
ian
Smaller car then - bothered about looks at all?
Toyota Avensis
Skoda Octavia
Taxi drivers choice sir. Super reliable. Plus you can keep hold of all toyota badges and shirts etc if you get an Avensis.

looks matter a wee bit although i'm not looking at anything like the Supra obviously.
kinda ruled out the Octavia and Avensis but wouldn't be adverse to a Vectra / Passat / A4

C-Class estate is probably harder to find than an E-Class, but I don't think they have the same rust issues.

saw a nice one that i liked but it was a 2.0 petrol, not a diesel so not really the most economical thing in the world.
do seem hard to come by though, you're right.
Hmm you'll probably page more for an A4 or a Passat than a Skoda or even a Seat and they are the same car.
Only other option at that sort of level is Nissan Primera of Ford Mondeo, or an old BMW/Merc. Everything else will be french and therefore fall apart on you.
Did find a Terrano though

lol
i know french cars have a bad name but they're not THAT bad....are they?
have heard the Peugeot diesels are actually quite good and am actually considering buying the smallest car possible in a bog standard Saxo VTR
did think about that one. not the prettiest though, what's the engines like in them?
What?
You're kidding aren't you? The V70's are really nice!!!
You can get a nice one for 3-4k.
Petrol engines go on forever (200k+) with FSH, so I presume same of the diesels.
Just don't buy one with a dodgy ECU lol

a bit boxy for me, although i like the Merc C-class bizarrely (sp?). perhaps i'm just a bit of a snob :d
i don't mind the V70's so much to be honest, just know i'd want a T5 which is more money and more money if it goes wrong too.
hmmmmm

what sort of mpg do you get out of one?
Pajero - Shit. Had one a few years ago - on a diesel SWB you are lucky to get 25mpg, and since diesel costs more than petrol it's hardly economical. Oh - and something so high up felt damn unsafe to me every time I went around a corner.
I've just sold my Focus hatchback. Pretty boring, but very cheap to run / fix.
How about a Saab 95 estate. A friend of mine has had one from new, he's done 260,000 miles in it and the only non wear and tear item he has had to replace was the starter motor.
I had an interesting conversation with a Saab fanatic the other day and apparently, Saab engines are built to take 1000 BHP and then deliberately scaled down power wise, thats why they last so long! He also reckoned he could turn his Saab aero from 330 to 480 brake with the fitting of a £400 ECU:blink: Didn't know whether to believe him or not.
funnily enough i'd looked at Saab's as well but disregarded them as i know bugger all about them!
anyone else shed any light on Saab?
Pug 306 HDI sounds about right, thinking about it myself tho does anyone know how much extra insurance we'd be talkin bout as second car?
What about Focus (http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.asp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&photo=1&state=none&sort=&make=FORD&min_pr=3000&source=0&model=FOCUS&max_pr=4000&agerange=&mileage=&miles=100&postcode=ab22+8sp&ukcarsearch_full.x=26&ukcarsearch_full.y=8) or Cougar (http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.asp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&photo=1&state=none&sort=&make=FORD&min_pr=3000&source=0&model=COUGAR&max_pr=4000&agerange=&mileage=&miles=100&postcode=ab22+8sp&ukcarsearch_full.x=46&ukcarsearch_full.y=11) or Mondeo (http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.asp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&photo=1&state=none&sort=&make=FORD&min_pr=3000&source=0&model=MONDEO&max_pr=4000&agerange=&mileage=&miles=100&postcode=ab22+8sp&ukcarsearch_full.x=35&ukcarsearch_full.y=7)
i think we have a winner!!!
am actually really liking the Saab 9-5's and they're peanuts!

t5 ones are awsome....but not sure it would be within your budget

that's what i thought :(
am happy (relatively) with the Saab 9-5 but would need to be a diesel to get the economy i need.

T5 R you mean :D
Sorry thought you wanted diesel... if you want petrol you might get a T5 for that, might be an 850 though and they are not pretty.
Seriously, V70's are nice cars. 850's are boxy I'll give you that but a V70 with the tail spoiler and alloys are really nice looking. Well I think so.

Glad I could be of service:)
Pug diesel is a top motor, rest of the car... basically electrical issues like most french motors (my sis had a laguna brand new for her work car and it was totally screwed up, wouldn't touch one) and i know a number of 206 owners that have had problems.
306 seems to be the best of the bunch but you should be fine with a saab, should have all the toys too.

have just been informed that Saab's using Renault engines??
back to the drawing board?
Saab 9-5 2.3 t Fast but potentially expensive if they go wrong.
Expensive to insure and not that great on petrol. The up side is they are very very comfortable, offer bags of space and cruise the motorways with ease. I was seriously thinking of a second hand saab estate for a while as a third car! The other thing going for them is their lack of status, a bit like the golf if you know wahat I mean.
i can't win :(
okay. i can't spend any more than this but i could always spend less on a runaround.
mk3 Golf GTI?
Reliant Robin?
:d
amazed it took you so long, Michael :p
The reno engine was fine, the issue was with the electrics. The service lights on the laguna were always on, event he garage couldn't make it turn off. Then it decided the ABS wasn't working even though it was (again Reno dealer couldn't fix) and then i think the passenger window stopped going up and down.
Saab has an air of cool i think. Noty a status car but interesting to people none the least. Given the sales in their home market and the weather conditions they can't be that bad.
Golf is ver slow and heavy, you'd be better off with a Seat Ibiza/Leon or a Focus TDCI but they are probably a bit high cost for what you want.

a leon is the same as a golf though?
really like the focus TDCI but pricey iirc.
will have a browse tonight :d
how about this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PRO-STREET-DRAG-RACE-NITROUS-LOTUS-ELITE-4-5-ROVER-V8_W0QQitemZ230051607057QQihZ013QQcategoryZ31354QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
A good friend recently puchased a new shape vw passat in dark blue, 2.0 fsi with all the trimmings. What a great car. It was a saloon but the rear seats still fold down so there's still loads of room
a leon is the same as a golf though?
my ibiza is supposed to be the same as a polo, had a lot of bother with it tho.
