Well at least they have warning systems in place. Hopefully people will manage to get away from the coast before it strikes. :(

By comparison, the boxing day 2004 tsunami was caused by a 9.3 magnatude earthquake and generated waves of up to 20 meters.

Hopefully this won't be too bad since they'd had a bit of warning this time.

Eh? That can't be right.

Live from Wikipedia:
Because a Tsunami behaves like a 'shallow water wave,' its speed is based on the depth of the water. Typically, a tsunami wave will travel across a deep ocean at an average speed of 400 to 500 mph.

A small tsunami has hit northern Japan, according to the country's meteorological agency (JMA).

It said a 40cm (16 inches) wave hit Nemuro port in the Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido.
I hope they had their wellies on or it could be a disaster!

Apparently several sandcastles were completely destroyed.
