Mpg

Well i managed to get 200 miles to 33 litres of petrol. Giving me a figure of 27.5 mpg.

That o2 sensor i bought has already paid for itself as it used to be about half that !

I have a tt 6 spd. I am mainly town driving with the odd dual carriageway and about 10 miles of that was motorway.

I thought it was quite a reasonable figure. :)

Good to hear it has made a noticeable difference Col

Anyone who hasn't changed their O2 sensor for a few years should defintely do so, it makes a big difference to fuel economy and smoothness of the engine at lower rpms. As said a new O2 sesnor will pay for itself in fuel savings in a short time.

If there is any interest I can organise another O2 sensor group buy.

The group buy price would be £79 each including postage, normal price £88 including postage (they are over £100 each from UK T-dealer I believe).

The NA Supra unfortunately needs 2 oxygen sensors (the TT only needs one), one in each of the 2 manifolds.

It may seem expensive, but as Col said they should pay for themselves in fuel saving over time. They are also one of the main sensors the ECU uses to determine the fueling, so will help the engine run smoother.

This pic shows the stock NA manifolds and 2 bosses where the oxygen sensors fit.

I cannot stress how much of a money saving tip this is!

Part numbers for O2 sensors...

UK

89465-19595 (RR)

89465-19605 (FR)

Jap

89465-19635

VVTI

89465-19725

I don't know what they are for the NA. I also don't know if all the sensors are essentially just all the same except different bracket/connector.

I believe I read they should be replaced every 3 years... I've had my car longer than that and never changed it so god knows when/if it has ever been done.

Nic,

Quick question, do all supras use this sensor ? also apart from low mpg how can you tell if you need to replace it or should all supras with mileage over say 70,000 need to be replace ?

FYI

I have a (decatted) 1994 Jap manual TT

thanks

Yes all MKIV Supras have either one or two O2 sensors. Your NA is fitted with two O2 sensors.

If your car has done 70K on the original sensors then I would say definitely time to fit new ones, you should see improvement in mpg and generally smoother engine running.

Have a read of these articles, the first one explains what an O2 sensor does, the second explains how you can test an O2 sensor

I got a TT, done 53K miles but it is 13 years old... should I get a new O2 sensor? I do over 1,000 miles a month.

If car is still using the orignal O2 sensor or it has not been changed for a few years, then I would definitely recommend it.

Swapping over the O2 sensor is relatively easy just 2 nuts to undo and electrical connector to unplug. They are a bit difficult to access though from underneath, you need to remove a small triangular shaped brace and have long arms. Also the nuts holding the O2 sensor on are usually rusted up.

You can also access them from the top by removing the heat shield for the turbo I believe, I've not done it this way though, so not sure which is easier. They are easier to change on the NA as there is better access.

Here's a pic of an O2 sensor for reference:
