View Full Version : Nov / Dec Meet

Looks like our rolling road day is going to be pushed back til at least January guys so how about a meet in between? (november or december?)

Any ideas on dates, locations or good driving routes?

possibly meet at loch lomond and drive up the A82? Stirling way? (central for east and west coast members)

Aye that's what i was thinking either a scoot up to Fort William, set off in the morning, dinner at McD's and then back via the loop to Kinlochleven.

Or - slightly shorter with the chance of some food at a pub or failing that from a chippy a run out the back of Denny through Killin? and up to Aberfeldy basically follow the Trossachs Trail back to Callendar and then either head back to Stirling for some food or back to the Motorway for all to go their own way.

sounds like a good plan mate. so the choice is either:

(a) run up the A82 to Fort William for some grub and back down again
(b) run along the trossachs trail to Aberfeldy then back to Callander / Stirling for some food

I'm thinking option B will be most popular as it's more central and isn't going to break the bank for anyone whereas someone from the east coast is gonna spend a fair bit of cash getting accross to Glasgow and then up to Fort William and back.

I'll wait for a few more suggestions then put a poll up.

No need to run across to Glasgow to set off to Fort William - start at Stirling services. People from Glasgow come up M80 and everyone else up the M9

That would be a good start point for both tours actually.

From there the run to Fort William is about 120 miles (and i suggest a tour not a racr to to the hills heh) or about 60/70 miles round trip on some quite tight roads but with possible picture stops along the way.

sorry. when i say Glasgow i mean north of Glasgow, i.e. Balloch / Loch Lomond.

I wouldn't have thought folk from Glasgow will be too keen on going over to Stirling to come back accross to the west coast again is all.

Perhaps that one is better left for next year when the weather is a little better anyway?

i'm certainly erring towards the Trossachs route towards Aberfeldy myself. Will see if anyone else has any suggestions though.....

okie poke

for reference y'all here's the route to Fort William, Stirling is sort of in the middle for Glasgow peeps, you just approach Crianlarich from a different direction really. Also reckons about a 100 mile from start point.

http://www.multimap.com/map/aproute.cgi?client=public&startx=279338&starty=693273&endx=0&endy=0&startrd=&starttown=Stirling&startpc=&startcountry=GB&endrd=&endtown=fort%20william&endpc=&endcountry=GB&rn=GB&qs=s&starttime=11:22&input_rt=aproute_pan&lang=

and the other trip should be Aberfoyle, my mistake there. Better start from Falkirk for twisty roads and scenary but Stirling is the easy centre point for everyone.

d'oh. of course Aberfeldy is over by the A9

could certainly get some food at Aberfoyle and drive up towards the lochs up the hill......get some decent photo opportunities there as well.

Well. If there are no other suggestions, lets pick a date?

the 2nd Dec seemed to be most popular for the RR Day but as this is just a meet perhaps we could do it sooner?

what do you think guys?

Ian W

well it looks like the general concensus (well, those who voted in Supra-Chat) is that this is held on the 2nd December.

So now we know where we're going and we know what date, who's gonna be there?

Did we decide on a meeting point chaps? Falkirk Wheel or Stirling services? Services are easier, Wheel gives a better drive though...

What do we want to do about grub guys? since it looks like there's gonna be about a dozen of us (minimum) then i think the pub/s in Aberfoyle would have a fit if we all walked in.

Suggestions?

Oooh loads of posts looks like a good meet in prospect.

Meeting point - really needs to be determined by what people can find. The Wheel is well signed and not far off the motorway, there is also a petrol station very close by for those wanting to fuel up and avoid getting scamped in the wilds!

Services are the easiest to find by far though and we can head back that way anyway as it makes a nice loops and stops us recovering any roads.

Food - hmmm. If it was summer i'd say bring sarnies and lets picnic or stop at the chippy in callendar. with this being december though that might not be a good move. There is a pub with a fair sized car park at Kilmahog which we could check out or we can go into Stirling for food afterwards. THere is a Pizza Hut at Springkerse if anyone fancies that.

We'll probably not get there until mid afternoon though so big breakfasts could be the order of the day. There is also bound to be Brewer's Fayre jobs all over the place so could try one of those.

Food afterwards doesn't sound too bad at all, i agree. as you say Martin, perhaps in Stirling.

If all else fails there's always a MacD's or similar and i'll definitely be getting bacon sarnies in Aberfoyle!!

not sure on time to meet.

would 10:30 be too early?

Sounds good 10 - 10:30 at Falkirk Wheel car park then. Shouldn't be too busy. If anyone wants to walk up and see the wheel they can.

Route should take a couple of hours (touring not racing) but we can stop for pics in a couple of locations. Loch Katrine is a good one, there is a big car park so we can all get together, should be quiet too.

There are also a few pull ins as we go through but it looks like we'll have a few too many cars for most of them.

And of course there is the bacon roll stop we need to have.

Back into Stirling for some scoff after the run then.

Current planned route for those who want to look or have Tom Tom etc:

Meet at Falkirk Wheel 23 miles from Glasgow 23 miles from Edinburgh so hurrah for that!

http://www.thefalkirkwheel.co.uk/content/TFW_SubSection/index.asp?ID=21

Head off through Denny and follow the B818 through the Carron Vally, past the reservoir and up to Fintry.

Turn off at Fintry onto B822 to Kippen

Through Kippen and up to Thornhill.

Turn left onto A873 towards Port of Menteith then follow A81 to Aberfoyle for a bacon roll

From Aberfoyle follow A821 through Duke's Pass down to Loch Katrine (excellent bit of twisty road).

Stay on that road through Brig O' Turk to the wonderfully named Killmahog (there is a pub here if anyone wants to stop but we'll have to see on numbers for their car park as it isn't huge).

Turn right onto A84 through Callendar and back to Stirling. We can make it longer if necessary but that's not a bad loop. It'll be great as long as the weather holds off for us.

Thoughts anyone?

Well I think its common knowledge that Geordie (surrounding area) folk have a brilliant night in Edinburgh and us Edinburgh folk love a night out in Newcastle.

Did a recce this weekend and its about a 100 mile round trip. The roads were wet but it wasn't raining and while there are a few tight bits it seemed ok. in 15 miles i met one other car. THe towns were still busy of course but if we can get there without being stuck behind a coach it should be a top day out.

Invited some mates from the FTO OC too since we're all about inclusion heh.

It'll be great as long as the weather holds off for us.
m.

Is this still the intended route and times?
cheers

Sorry about the big Letters james old boy its just that everyone calls Currys comet. We even get customers wanting to speak to the manager and threatening to go across to Currys, until we tell them to go across the road and try the rant from the correct side of the road where Comet is :d kills me everytime lol.

I know!! How could I? It's disgracefull. One thing that I have learnt is stop acting like a kid with a new toy and wait till something that is important ( ie visit to Scotland) has passed and THEN do what ever it was you wanted, in the case a decat.

The vultures were round the car while we were still there! Bits of dash, drivers lock all sorts being claimed. You have to laugh or you'd cry.

Car all insured and MOTed and now recovered to yard in Alexandria courtesy of the RAC.

Thanks for everyone's help. Standing out in the rain like that too i hope no one has got a cold as a result. Seriously though chaps thanks so much and helping out with statements. Don't know how i'd have coped with a bus load of "injured" old biddies to contend with.

You can see from the pics looking up the road that the rear wheels of the bus are right on the line. That's after he moved too. It just seems unfortunate that we happened to meet at that exact time.

In other news, anyone know how to make a claim with Sky? The office is closed and i want to let them know asap.

I also have a set of Pure Sport Mats, TRD HID lights (only ones in country apparently) and four new tyres for sale :)

p.s. supra-man, good bacon rolls. Sold ye car a week early though!

Martin, hope you and Emma are not feeling too sore today.
I thought the recovery was taking you back to Falkirk - not Alexandria ????
Other than the misfortunate incident putting a damper on the day-it was heading towards being a good meet.
As long as you and Emma are OK, thats what matters most
cheers
Ian
PS: I still cannot get over that old biddie (80 years +), coming off the bus and saying that theres not much damage done !!!!
(WTF)

martin_a
03-12-06, 18:31
Old biddy who knew instinctivly how fast everyone was going too.

The pics say a lot actually, you can see the bus had come from across the white line and that the impact was right on the centre line.

Been to see the car today and it looks as bad as it did at the time, quite sad really, propped up on some alloys because it isn't driveable.

Will speak to Ensign on monday and get ready to reject their rubbish offer for the car.

What exactly happened? Gutted for you. :(

Basically we were running along quite nicely but the road is all blind bends and things, i know it quite well and did the recce the week before so it isn't like i found myself on an unfamiliar road.

Anyhow, alreadfy braking for the corner (blind) when the coach appeared. Due to the size of the thing and the tight corner he was over the white line so not being able to tell if we'd make it or not i pushed the pedal harder and she just locked up and slid. Irealised, let off the brake and steered but it was already too late. It did mean we went into the side of the coach and not head on though so lucky escape really.

Important note:

can anyone who spoke to the police at the time please PM me their full name and contact details? I think the insurance might ask about witnesses.

Well i contacted all witness people and i have printed off one of the shots looking down the road which shows the state of the edge of the road (no run off) and the position of the bus after crash (on verge at far side but filling road) and importantly the debris from the impact which has to be a good foot or so on my side of the road.

Just sitting and waiting for the offer now!
