G.W. Its because the area at the base of the windscreen and to about half the height of the windscreen in an arc between the windscreen and the bonnet is a very high pressure area. That's why most cars have the air inlet for the passenger compartment there. Air is forced into areas of lower pressure through any gap, so lifting the back of the bonnet will force air into the engine bay, not let it out.
