View Full Version : Track Day

Bobbeh

I've booked an afternoon on 14th October at Bedford Autodrome for a track session... anyone else up for it? Not bad for £100 ish, or £175 for the full day.

(This is the weekend after the JapshowII at Santa Pod)

If anyones interested let me know, check out the link below for details too:

Quality!
Me and my mate were thinking of doing a track day.
He has a 1992 Porker Carrera RS, nicely stipped out from the factory!
I'll give him a call during the day and confirm.

Cheers,
Ro

Ooh interesting, I could be in Milton Keynes that day picking the car up from Turbofit. Hmmmmmmm.

Have to chat with Sam\Greg, see if the car will be ready but I'm definitely interested  Nice one Bobbeh. Although I will have to check noise regs.

101 dB !!! Oh well, that's me out :( Might try and get a baffle made.

Doh! I have a dirty old HKS Hiper.
Bobbeh, are they strict on the noise limit?

Very strict, I doubt a hyper will pass, refit stock system.

Very strict, I doubt a hyper will pass, refit stock system.

Ruthlessly strict, and they have in the past reduced the limit on the day without advertising it. (happened to some scooby owners, none could run)

I would love to do this Bobbeh but my cars a bit bent, chassis leg needs pulling, shocks are fecked and i keep getting a intermittent misfire when the car is warm, cold or bored. I wouldnt mind coming up to watch or bringing my uncles 996 Carrera 2 so you can all see how yours fair against it?!

Muffleman
02-09-06, 14:38
If they're gonna get all arsey on the day, then I'm not even going to attempt it. Shame :( And who is gonna retrofit a stock system

Bobbeh
02-09-06, 15:22
Yeah, noise limits are pretty strict there, I still have both cats in and am still taking my baffle just in case.

Kosmic, bring what you want :) I'm just going for fun and have included some tuition with my afternoon so I can get some tips on my driving and to help learn the track, as it will be my 1st time at Bedford.

Clarkey
02-09-06, 17:19
That's me out then :( Even with the baffle I doubt I'd get under 101 dB limit. I think Ian C's measured 104 dB with his baffle in when he was at Bruntingthorpe.

colsoop
02-09-06, 18:15
If i can get my wheel alignment done and sort out a baffle then i hope to do this, what session are you doing Bobbeh ?
Bedford is the track i want to start the supra on as i haven't really pushed her before and it is supposedly quite generous with run off, and no gravel traps and tyre walls ;)

Bobbeh
02-09-06, 18:19
I'm doing the afternoon Col, 14th Oct. I thought about the full day, but knew I couldnt get up that early in the morning :D

I've definitely got the Bedford GT track down as the next trackday I want to do, it looks great. Much longer than most and there's a great big straight too. Might well be up for it, have to see nearer the time though.

I may well be up for this, done bedford a few times, had a big spin at the end of the straight, i will dig out the vid.

Very interested in this Bobbeh, never done a track day before but would love to give it a try :)

I'll try and get the sound level tested and confirm later in the week.

Not sure if an decatted RSR with the baffle in will meet the noise limit..

As requested, also moved to East events section.

Bobbeh
03-09-06, 20:35
Cheers fella, I think with the baffle you'll be ok, thats the whole reason for having it right? :D You're BPU arnt ya? It would be cool to have a few Supras up there kicking ass :)

Homer
03-09-06, 22:21
Fingers crossed the noise is okay!

BPU and putting out good power. Will be fitting a full set of shiny new Bilsteins and stock drop links the week before along with the Lance W allignement setup. Should be as ready for a track as it's ever been. The biggest problem is going to be the driver! (oh and the brakes, no 'UK' ones here :D )

Are you allowed round with an instructor or chosen passenger? Wouldn't mind someone with a little more experience to give a few pointers (Bobbeh, Simon? :innocent: )

terawua
03-09-06, 22:30
Yeah Homer, yours will need bafflage! It was noticeable to me and I was in front of you on the way to Fairmile.....

P.s. god this sounds like fun, but I have just sold mine.... fool!

Bobbeh

Haha, I'm not going to be in a much better position than you mate, never been to Bedford Autodrome before so I have no idea what its going to be like.. I know they like to use different layouts too, although I believe the GT one is supposed to be good! :)

You can add tuition, like i have done, its an extra £25 for the day.. and you can also bring a passenger, (again more money).. however Im sure it wont cost any more to take someone round who's already signed up.

Jap Brakes tho!! :cya: :D

Bobbeh

Found this vid of the GT circuit itself.. look fairly simple in the main, with lots of fast straights and favours the higher powered cars than the nimble ones by the looks of it.

Well you know what they say.. you snooze you lose :)

Bignum, looks like a fun circuit for a big powered car, I think the GT layout favours them over the nimbler types, as its more power straights and sweeping bends rather than twisties.. looks fun tho :)

Homer
14-09-06, 13:49
Called them and got booked in for the full day :)

They're doing the full 3.6 mile GT circuit on the day.

Noise limits are:
101db static @ 3/4 max rpm @ 0.5m
88db drive by at 40m

Need to get mine checked now!

Bobbeh
14-09-06, 14:07
Awesome :D

Homer
14-09-06, 15:08
Oh balls :(

Sextons reackoned it was 114db at statis (yeah right!) so purchased a db meter from Maplins.

102db @ 4.2krpm @ 0.5m

will try and locate another back box...

Bobbeh
14-09-06, 15:17
With a baffle or without?

And if you're doing the full day, you can give ME a ride around :D

Homer
14-09-06, 16:05
With Baffle unfortunately. Going to try it a bit later without just for a laugh!

No problems with you being a passenger, just make sure you wear brown trousers :D

Bobbeh
14-09-06, 16:08
D'oh! :) I was gonna say I might be able to get one made for you if you need one.. but as you do, could you possibly put one cat back in to see if that helps? :)

Homer
14-09-06, 16:13
I was starting to think the same, its a shame as then I'll lose the AFR gauge (sensor is in the 2nd decat pipe).

Bobbeh
14-09-06, 16:28
Would that cause much of a problem? I mean if you cant run as high boost if you're partially catted you can just have it running rich?

bignum
14-09-06, 18:49

LeeT has been kind enough to give me his stock cat back system, picking up next weekend and will get it fitted right away. Should give plenty of time to get the bleed valve set up so its back to 1.2 bar.

Just hope Nic can get my shocks and suspension parts in time to fit and allign them before the 14th.

Its my 1st track day and really looking forward to it :D

Bobbeh
17-09-06, 21:19
I still have mine in the garage, and I even started polishing it up cos I'm sad :D

Me too m8, I've got a service to sort all fluids soon, I just had an A service about a month ago where they noticed the others needed replacing, so I'll do that before I go... and Im also thinking about tires for my stockers. :)

bignum
18-09-06, 08:39
Should be a good day then, ive got some drop links to change before the day, hopefully its dry, so i can get the slicks out, if anyones up for a couple of hot laps i`ll see you down there, oh and no spins.:d

Bobbeh
18-09-06, 10:49

I just hope it doesnt rain, I dont want to end up spending loads of money on racey tires only to have it piss down! :D

I am looking into this trackday now, GT circuit looks fun.

I think I may be a tad too loud though, i need to get someone with a DB meter to measure my motor. I have a baffle I can fit which also reduces the boost.

I will email Bedford Autodrome and find out how strict they are :)

As mention in PM, nice to meet you yesterday, your car is awesome :D The pick up from 3.5krpm is so much better than my BPU car, when it comes on boost christ its quick!

We managed to get a better check (open air rather than where I tested it before) on my RSR with baffle and it came out at 99db max. Going to stick with that for the track day... It seems as quiet as a mouse from the drivers seat!

I've pulled out because my zorst is too noisy :(, also a slipping clutch! My mate with the 1992 Porshe Carrera RS has confirmed the booking.
I'll come to watch. Muffleman, if you do pick your car up from Turbofit that day and are going to this event, would you mind giving me a lift as I'm dropping my car off to Knight-Racer that morning?

Cheers,

Just realised it's not so close the MK, the nearest I'll be is J13 M1 but can take a detour to pick you up if its not too far!

I have to be there at 08.30 at the VERY latest, so probably be at J13 of the M1 by 07.45 latest.

You've got my number so we can chat closer to the day.

The impression I got from the company handling it was that you could 'upgrade' on the day, but you might want to check with them first - link is in Bobbeh's 1st post.

Hehe, see, there are more than one benefit of doing the half day ;) Sadly not for me, my old man has wisely booked me down for a change of wheels at 9am tm, so much for my lie in.. I just got back from work :(

I ended up getting a set of Toyo 888s on my stockers.. so when I actually get better at driving I'll put something better like the Pirellis on.

My cars all ready to go, had it sorted for oils etc this week, got the boot rubbers, gearbox oil, diff oil, clutch fluid done and that seal, even a dash bulb, so fingers crossed for a fun day tm :)

Popped over to Phoenix this morning as I had to put my mongoose exhaust back on. Even with the insert, my miami-gt straight-thru measured on two separate readings (cheers Homer and Matt Harwood) at 112db! I guess running TTC may have something to do with it as well :-)

Bobbeh, totally agree, the Supra's were kicking arse today - apart from the odd high spec porsche ;) Thanks for the ride too, I was loving it, honest! It also shows me just how much I have to learn about track driving.

Thanks for telling us about the trackday Bobbeh, it was fantastic. Great to meet you guys as always and to witness our cars mixing it up with the other marques is a treat indeed! These cars continue to amaze me in terms of their capability on track - so much better than I am lol!

My only real regret is that i didnt have my miami-gt exhaust when myself and Homer went through Hatfield tunnel on the way back!:p

Just spoke to him and he was definitely there. He said he went out on his own first and shat himself. Then an instuctor talked him through it. He mentioned the Testarossa spinning out or something? Did you guys get there quite early? He seemed to think he saw Supras earlier on - He sounded quite confused, lol

Really gutted I missed this one, just had too much to do plus my car was way to loud on boost :(

My car measured at 95db with the Mongoose exhaust on! I just had a quick look at upcoming trackdays via bookatrack and even the static limit at Oulton Park (106db) is too low for my other exhaust. What did yours measure at?

Rgds,

Bobbeh
15-10-06, 13:48
Yeah the Testarossa went in to the gravel trap just outside the pits, they ended up getting the Red flags out while they pulled it out. Probably an expensive paint job required on that one :)

There were plenty of Porkas there, GT3's and a yellow RUF RS which looked stripped out with a roll cage, they were very quick.

I have a fun day today, checking nuts, brakes and bearings and the like as somethings gone on mine. Lucky I have the Civic right? :D

A pity we didn't meet him. But equally, you should have let him know to come over to the Supras and say hi :-) We don't bite - usually lol.

When I arrived at around 8.30, the other guys were already there. Homer arrived before the gates opened I think :p

Mate I hope it is nothing too serious.

Three cars spun along the pit straight - black Evo, an elise and the testarossa. It was a strange place to lose it as they were no where near the hairpin at the end.

Just took a couple of pics of the state of the tyres.. makes me chuckle looking at them considering they were brand new on yesterday :D

jesus those tyres look like they took some abuse, i dont think you would get many trackdays out of them and still be useable on the road, expensive game isent it, good look with the car and let us know when the next trackday is.

Had a great time yesterday, was good to see you all again and I really enjoyed being a passenger :)
Pity it took until lunchtime to get on the track but a full day would have a been a bit too much for some I think, I know Bignum do £100 in fuel just for that afternoon

Just glad everyone got to take there cars home in one piece. Bobbeh you really need to get some slicks and save yourself some cash mate! You can't go buying £750 worth of tires every couple of track days  :d

Bobbeh

Well I got them mainly because I needed to drive with them on there and back etc, I was told when I called up I couldnt take a support vehicle, which seems to have been a load of tat. Slicks maybe an option for when these die, but I've also been told before that the Toyos dont favour heavier cars as they're quite a soft compound.. but they worked really well, not much was faster around the corners... apart from Si :D

BTW, are you still on the stock LSD simon?

Loved it when I went out with Homer, in car conversation went a bit like this:

Homer: There's Bobbeh
Burna: Quick catch him!
(Bobbeh then shoots around the corner for the long back straight)
Homer: Look at that grip!
(Bobbeh disappears of into the distance on the back straight :d )

Amazing amount of grip for road tyres mate

Also:

Homer: What gear is this corner?
Burna: 2nd? (What's he asking me for? I drive an auto and don't have a clue what all this gear business is he's talking about :p :d )

What tyres did you go for in the end Bobbeh, sounds like they did the trick.

Bobbeh

Toyo 888s. The Pirelli Corsas I was also considering would have cost me £100 more (for just the tyres) than I got the Toyos for which included them being fitted and balanced.

TBH for a session learning the limits of my car etc, I decided to go for the 'cheaper' option to start as I probably wouldnt benefit from the more expensive option from day one, if you get me?

They were great.. maybe put too much stress on my setup.. either them or Homer anyway ;) :D

Think I might have to get a set, I was also looking at Avons but they are really really soft, prob too soft for a Supra.

Some amusing banter going on here lolol!

I was running kumho ecsta sport ku31s. My car is an everyday runner and these now have a couple track sessions behind them. Not let me down yet - but I am probably not quick enough lol! It was amusing observing the rolled up bits of rubber still stuck to them:cool:

Glad you guys made it back ok and also hope your brother gets his gearbox sorted. I was watching you out on track together, very impressive:cool:

Feedback on the circuit, what is it like ?
How are they for noise levels and scrutineering etc.
Can you take another car in with you with wheels and parts etc ?

Hopefully i can get on a track day soon.

The GT Circuit is good fun, good mix of straights, sweeping long corners and a couple of real sharp ones. (4.5 miles too)

The best thing about it is the amound of run off, ie if you start to come out of a corner too quickly you've got loads of room and space incase you cock up or if you chose to run wide.. so what :)

Noise levels, I didnt have any issues with my Veilside Ti with cats.. and that was without the baffle. They are strict, but just get something you can use or make up a baffle, you can turn up and if you pass the standard checks but fail the track tests they'll give you a chance to sort it. But its understandable why they're strict, sadly because they're newer they have tougher regulations.

Its an excellent circuit for a newbie. Its flat, which makes it a 'tiny' bit dull but there are some undulations around the track for some bumpiness :)

As for support vehicles.. I dont think they want people doing that, but tbh if you turned up with your stuff I dont think they'd tell you to bugger off, if they did theres plenty of places before you get there where you could make changes etc.

There was a great mix of cars there too.

Sounds like great fun, I went there a while back when my car was stock and only had it a few months, and I was the only Supra there. First time on a track for me too and it was totally like diving in at the deep end without being able to swim... I wonder how I'd cope now, 2 years on and bpu. If they'd let me in with bpu, how many db would I be making with full decat and veilside Ti exhaust? Too many?
Glad you all put in a good word for the supra, I bet after my performance all that time ago they would have thought it was a piece of shite!

 Gerald :)

Wez has issues with his de-cat single.. I had none with my stock setup with the Ti pipe.

You maybe ok with the baffle m8 :)
