View Full Version : mkiv supra intercooler limitations
Hi,
Im thinking of using the mkiv supra side-mount intercooler for use in another project. how does it compare to an evo intercooler? is there anyone on here who has run high power numbers still using the stock intercooler?
cheers
I use one with my small single without any problems

how much power is yours putting out?
think its rated upto about 450bhp.

thanks for the reply, do you have any proof, or anyone who has run that amount of power using the stock intercooler ? dyno sheets etc?
thanks
i cant remember where i saw this, i was in a tuners garage and he had this info all printed out, but for the life of me cant remember where it came from... most peeps running the 400 mark will have a 2 rom fmic or a chris wilson smic.
yeah im planning to use the supra intercooler on a 1.8L turbocharged engine, not aiming for huge power but i want to keep it safe and have a nice cool charge.
will the supra intercooler do? my other option is a stock intercooler from a galant vr4 but fitting one of them will be more difficult hence why i am interested to use the stock supra sidemount.
The stock supra smic has excellent ducting both front and rear.
In a different engine bay, without the ducting and perhaps even absorbing heat, it could be a different story.
i wish to mount the intercooler in a side mount position replacing the standard sidemount which came with the car (which is 3x thinner than the supra cooler and smaller as well) i'd imagine in the factory sidemounted position, the new cooler would also receive a good amount of flow characteristics as it would in the supra application. i can always fab up some ducting out of sheet metal to direct mroe airflow to it.
still wondering about the limit of these side mount stock supra coolers though

well you say you are not after huge power from the 1.8L engine.
The sup's with stock ic's regularly run approachinfg 400bhp, so if you properly duct it and keep it cool then no problem surely? Unless your "huge power" is a lot different from mine? :)
im planning on hitting 160 kw which is around 210hp at the wheels. account for 4wd drive train loss and its a fair bit more at the crank. the thing though is that the motor im using is fairly weak, has weak rods, which snap very easy due to detonation. therefore im very keen to get a good intercooler. there are plenty of cheap and large no-name branded shiny intercoolers around here btu i doubt their quality which is why im after the supra sidemount.
sounds like a good idea ?

If it's in decent condition, pressure-wise it can hold up to at least 26psi (display at the intake, the core actually sees more pressure)
It may look flimsy with the plastic endtanks but it does a jolly good job.
Just make sure that there is a good, low pressure area behind the core.
