Following on from this thread.... (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=78661)

I finally got round to checking my spark plugs. Only problems is i havent got a clue what im looking for to see if they need replacing or not. Could someone please have a look at the photos below and give me your views.

Each plug has 2 photos, 1 of the plug and coil pack and a 2nd of a close up of the plug. The photos are in the order the plugs are in the engine, ie the first 2 photos are the "front-most" plug, the last set of 2 are the furthest away. Hope that makes sense.

Cheers guys.

They don't look too bad, but they do look just a little old .

I replace mine every 3-4k regardless, the ones Matt Harwood mentioned are only about £10.50 a set at Partco.

At that price it's good practice to replace them regularly.

They're good for the BPU car too. :)

Is the oil around the coil packs fairly normal??

No problem. :)

The oil will be coming from the cylinder head cover gaskets ,this isn't a problem unless it's excessive. It's very common to get a little oil leaking out.

I knew the plugs would be alright really. Good about the oil though. Ill buy some new plugs tomorrow i think.

plug 4 seems to have alot of dry water marks on and around the ceramic bit also the plug lead. you might be getting rain water entering from somewere. have you got a aftermarket bonnet ?

They have to be either platinum or iridium with the small electrode but i was wondering what heat range he is running as he is single

Cant find a model number on them anywhere. They are NGK-R thats all i can tell you. They were on the car when i bought it so i dont know for deffinate. Ill have a look through the old receipts and see if theres anything there.

How long have they been in? they look like they are slightly to cold for the running conditions, ie a lot of soot and the centres are very dark brown, one or two of them also look a little oily, but i suspect that may be due to the oil that has leaked from the cam covers into the plug recess and in turn run down over the plug as you removed them.

The only documentation i can find on them says they are NGK 8 Plugs and were fitted in October 2003, so well overdue for a change if this was indeed the last change. Im sure they have been changed since then though. Its had a full service including Cambelt within the last year, surely they would have changed them then??
