Engine / Fuel problem...

Sorry to put this here. But have had no constructive help in the technical section :(

http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=80003

I got my car back from its service yesterday. And the guy that did it said that its 'pinking' probably due to bad fuel in the engine or that the engine hasnd been setup properly when it was imported.

Can anyone help? I have Optimax in the car, so I doubt its bad fuel. So what exactly is pinking, and what would need to be done to the engine?

Cheers party people.

Pinking, (high pitch explosive sounds) which can be the result of several problems with vehicle systems, is where the fuel and air mixture is ignited at the wrong time, sometimes called pre-ignition. Pinking must be rectified as soon as possible as it is detrimental to the engine, often causing damage to the pistons and other engine components if left unchecked :(

timing issue?

plugs might be the cause- as Matt H has said - is listed as one poss cause in the info Ive found.

Edd, see here for basic explanation of pinking/knocking/detonation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_knocking

What modifications have been done to your car? What boost are you running?

You really need to get the AF mixture checked out and get some one who specialises in Supras to thoroughly check the car over for you to determine the problem. Do not drive the car if it is knocking (is it just knocking when on boost at high rpms? if so it may be safe to drive if you stay off boost), as it could cause serious damage to your engine.

I would start with what Matt Harwood has said.

IIRC edd is running pretty much stock, if not completly stock.

Sorry if im wrong mate.

Is it just optimax thats bad for loosing octane? Or all fuels? That could explain why i had such problems on the way to JAE, my car had been sat for ages with a full tank. Oops!

I use tesco 99 btw

yeh i am totally stock. Have had new plugs and fule/oil/air filters fitted during the service.

the place i took it to seems to be pretty good, their carpark was full of Evo's, cossies, scoobys etc etc, and it was AFennell that suggested it a while back.

to tell the truth my boost gauge is in such a crap place i cant see it whilst driving without ducking under the steering wheel!!! so not sure what boost im running at the mo'.

I best call them back and get it sorted then. Cheers guys :)

Well my stock TT runs fine on the occasional half-tank of 95 RON so I sincerely doubt it's the fuel, especially if you've recently filled it with fresh Optimax.

Have you reset the ECU? Just wondering if it's may still be expecting Japanese 100 RON and needs to re-learn for our cheapo stuff.

How about plugs? Couldn't the wrong grade cause pre-ignition?

ok i've just spoken to the guys that did my service. they explained the noise to me. and to be totally honest i have noticed the noise, but I only noticed it yesterday!!!! after the service!!! before then i had never heard it before.

he says he needs to fit an Apexi Power FC to the car to change the ignition timing and its gonna be expensive. (or I add octane booster to my fuel)

now what do i do? im thinking I might take it somewhere else.

If your car is stock there is absolutely no need for that!

There is another cause.

Fill up with fresh fuel, reset the ECU.

Did you say the exhaust was blowing? Fix that too.

How good's your intercooler?

Which plugs are you using and what are they gapped to?

Definitely take it somewhere else, the guy clearly does not know what the problem is and is just trying to get your money. If your car is stock then there is absolutely no reason why it needs an aftermarket ECU fitting.

Someone will be able to advise on a decent tuners near you, how about Phoenix in Watford?

think I'll try GBH in Colchester now. They have a good rep on here.

Another possible cause that happened to Angies car recently.

Check the little hose form the wastegate VSV to the wastegate to make sure it hasn't popped off or isn't leaking. The one on Angies car popped off recently and caused pinking under load. Took me about a minute to put it right.

Re: RON rates going down - Optimax is prone to this. It should be no less than 97 but it is 98 when 'fresh' Because they can't guarantee the RON rating there isn't one on the pump. Notice that Esso Super etc all have 97 RON written next to them and Optimax doesn't?

Presumably the shift to 99 V Power will sort that out.

to reset the ecu you just unplug the battery for 20 odd mins right?
