View Full Version : Greddy T78 Single Turbo for 1993-98 Supra
From your website...
I would like to know more about running this turbo on a stock engine?? I am having my engine re-built in Feb 2007 and having a couple of things done at the same time, like fuel system, aem ecu, 264 cams, 2/3 row fmic (considering the 2 row more due to the the radiator being directly behind it), etc.
What are you recommendations for fueling and intercooler?
Also how long will the engine last if it is completely stock?
What sort of RPM will full boost come on at?
Are there any other recommended mods? Exhaust, induction bov all done. And my car has previously had an fmic on, but the core was rotting and needs to be replaced.
Also what sort of cost would there be for postage?
Cheers,
Graham
You might want to send a email to Dusty mate, he dont get on here much so you could be waiting a while.
bud, a 2row fmic will not be man enough for this tubbie.. you will need a 3row at the least, you will also need to build your engine if you are planning to run high boost to enable you to get the most out of the turbo. as low boost of under 1,4 bar will not be in the its efficeincy range.
a stock engine will last but no guarantees how long fella... there are people on here that are running big tubbies on stock engines so they are testiment to how strong the stock engine is.. but imo you will need a built engine, not just for reliabilty, also for a more responsive engine to that will make a large tubbie appear less laggy as it will rev quicker and also enable you raise the rev limit, again giving you more use of the turbo...
hope that helps you a little bit fella...more help will be along soon
Yeah I figured it might be a bit much for a standard engine.
Was also looking for that answer on the fmic...
What about the fueling? Would 650ccs be enough?

hmmm what's the 2 row rated up to? I know dude and Paul Evans (IIRC) swear by them
A T78 is only a 67mm turbo iirc but does have a larger hotside than most so i would have thought it would be fairly safe on the stock engine
T78 spec:)

I think the 650cc injectors would only run up to a T67 sized turbo.
Slightly concerning... 2 row is not enough, 650s are not enough... DAMMIT!! :p
At least the AEM is sufficient.... :D
Still concerned about the spool up of the T78... What sort of boost will it come on at? Car needs to at least be slightly road driveable...

it is my car:D
now that sounds awesome... and no high pitched BOV... I love it!! That is how I want mine to sound!!! Absolutely awesome!!!!
Hi Graham, everone,
I get on here all the time, when the BBS lets me. Seems to error out on me very often! :) I answer PM's every day, just do not post much currently.
First let me state I generally do not recommend the T78. Boost Logic and PHR 67mm turbo kits will spool MUCH quick and give you the same power and torque. The quality of the Mitsubishi Greddy turbos are also not the best. Their kit does not include a mid-pipe, is not heat coated, and comes with cheap rubber / plastic lines.
The PHR kits are the best quality you can buy and come with all stainless steel lines, a polished turbo (Boost Logic cost $125 extra for this, Greddy does not come polished either). PHR and BL kits are fully heat treated and include mid-pipes. The PHR and BL kits include V-bands on their downpipe/midpipe setups. Greddy is flanged. Whoever is doing the installation will GREATLY appreciate the V-band, and anyone on here that has installed a flanged style single turbo knows exactly why and what I mean. :)
Ok, that aside...to answer your questions:
T78 hits full boost at about 4,500 RPM's on a 6spd.
2-row is NOT enough. The Greddy or other brand 3-row is absolutely recommended for this size turbo. 4-row is too much.
650's are not big enough on full boost, you will be running them at 100% capacity. You should never run an injector past 80% duty cycle. 720cc's are the way to go here.
You absolutely do not need a built motor. Stock motors typically last a long time up to 700rwhp. The T78 with 264 cams will max at 670rwhp on a 6-speed. Now if it is in the budget then sure, we can talk about options. But you do not have to do it just because you are going to install a ~67mm turbo. As long as your motor is healthy before the upgrade you should be fine for a good time.
In terms of other upgrades:
Proper Gauges
Clutch or built tranny (6spd/auto)
HKS DLI 2 to support the AEM ECU (required)
Electronic boost controller
2 Blow Off Valves. 1 BOV (excluding the HKS Racing Type II) can support blowing off only about 500rwhp at a time.
That's all that is "required" or at least "HIGHLY recommended". Everything else is up to what you want your car to be like.
I have the T78, PHR, and BL kits in stock. I have complete fueling systems in stock with Walbro 342's which I know you prefer in the UK. I have AEM ECU's in stock, and HKS 264 cams / DLI 2. Oh, and of course Greddy 3-row FMIC's as well as other brands (Blitz and ARC). When I say in stock I mean here at the MVP warehouse, ready to ship on a moment's notice.
MVP is an Authorized Dealer (assuring you full warranty and tech support) for Greddy, Boost Logic, Powerhouse Racing, AEM, HKS, ARC, Blitz, and pretty much every other brand you can think of.
Postage will depend on your postal code and what all I am shipping you. Please let me know both those things and I will quote you properly.
Let me know any other questions you might have.
Kind regards,
Dusty
Sounds good, I just need to decide what I want from this of mine...
What is a HKS DLI 2?
Do I have to have a built tranny for jspec 6sp?
I was under the impression that the AEM can control boost, is this wrong?

a hks dli will give you a stronger spark and i think you have to have one with the AEM. There are people running 1000bhp through the stock 6spd so you should be OK;)

Yes you will need one with the AEM, or AEM's version, athough we still reccomend the HKS as it seems to be a better unit and more reliable.
Would it still be required if I went for a BL61 turbo and AEM?
Would it still be required if I went for a BL61 turbo and AEM?
Yes IMHO. yOu can get away with it, but you would be losing alot of power as you coudl not run full boost due to having your spakr blown out.
I too have a CDi unit, running a BL T61.. this is a must, esp if you are planning on running high boost with race fuel.
Will add to my list of things to buy... Just have not really heard of it being mentioned before hand. Thanks guys!
Yes, you really must have a DLI-2 if you are going to run the AEM. AEM converts backwards to 1980 technology to what we call wasted spark. With wasted spark you virtually must have an ignition amplifier (DLI-2, etc.). The AEM CDI does not work worth anything. AEM themselves have already RECALLED it TWICE if that tells you anything...

Dusty

Hi Dusty,
Just to cover the Walbro 342 issuse over here. When users are swapping from a JDM pump the 342 is required to achieve the correct filter position within the stock hanger. When changing to dual pumps, the stock pump mount mount is ditched, so I am pretty sure it is safe to assume the 341 or 342 will do.
Cheers for that info!
Dusty
What fuel system would be good for the T78 single setup ?
What fuel system would be good for the T78 single setup ?
A complete fuel system with either 720cc or 850cc injectors. I offer the Powerhouse Racing (in stock), Titan Motorsports, and Boost Logic (in stock) fuel systems.
If you are not looking for a complete system I can sell you individual pieces such as a fuel rail, injectors, pump, whatever.
Kind regards,
Dusty
