Im after a supra TT but have reservations.

Hey guys!

 

Fab forum BTW!

 

Ive been after a supra ever since i turned 17 and was able to drive, its my dream car and on my 23rb birthday im looking to own one.

 

Only problem is ive been used to quite new cars ive owned pug 206's pug 206 gti 180 and recently a porsche boxster s so ive been building up as i go along. Im used to the newness of the car but upmost of importance is the warranty.

 

My main concern is problems with an older car so i was wondering if some of you guys could give me some advice?

 

I dont want to have to keep forking out loadsa cash for parts etc if things keep going wrong. But if the supras are reliable and wont go wrong much i def wont mind getting my dream car!

Walk away now!! lol only kidding the Supra is built to do one thing and thats last a long time and handle loads of power, they are rock solid machine's and if you get a good one you should not really have any worries, as for the walking away part once you get the buzz of modding the soop then you can enter the big money side of it and you hand will never be out your pocket.

 

Jap cars are a lot better than the rubbish you have previously owned, but if your worried about running costs then maybe you should re consider if you are a petrol head and love all things cars and have the money to support then go for it, but as i said if you get a good one then you will be fine.

dont worry about it. there as solid as a rock :)

my Supe is the 4th car i've owned, and the oldest so far! and its given me absolutly no worries in the 10 months of ownership.

just make sure you look for a good one and get it checked over. I paid a little more to get a low mileage aswell.

The Supra is a very reliable car, one of the best, however you hit the nail on the head when you said parts are expensive. They can be very expensive cars to maintain if you are unlucky enough to buy one that isnt quite as mint as it looks on the outside. TBH in my experience car manufacturers will try their hardest to get out of fixing anything under warantee anyway, they ue every excuse in the book, so in the end you normally have to fork out some money anyway.

i love to say they are reliable, they are for a superish car... howver they are only a toyota but cost like a lotus.... and when they do go wrong.... omg does it cost. well it depends where you go i suppose. but your talking hundreds every time.

 

dont get me started on fuel...... but thats why we love em..

 

and if you do then go for it, performance is absolutly staggering and put a smile on my face EVERY time i drive it.:D :D :D

IF something does go wrong, it can be expensive depending what it is. If you're scraping every penny together to buy, think seriously. A good Supra is one that's been well cared for, and it costs a fair bit more to look after a Supra than a euro hatch.

If you got the cash to own/run one then get one. You can't get much more bang for buck than a supra. When things go wrong with it, the cost will be pricey but then again you are buying a performance GT and not a mondeo.

 

Have a good look around and take your time. You could also get an AA/RAC inspection (the 350+ one) to be double sure before parting with the mula.

I was 22/23 with mine, and found myself spending over £350 EVERY MONTH on it in insurance/fuel/repairs/mods. But I'd say the least spend was on the repairs, only every so often. Mostly it's insurance cost, then fuel, then mods (although most people on here do that the other way round ;) ).

Supras are cheap to buy these days, but they're not spring chickens any more, so things do go wrong. They were top end premium cars in their day and they cost accordingly. They easily eat a set of 265 section tyres in 10K miles, will need two oil changes in that time. Mind you, I did run my last Supra for 120K miles with only one mechanical failure.

 

If you have to ask if you can afford to run one properly, then you probably can't. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. I've seen too many threads from people saying the Supra's been laid up for x months waiting until they can afford to fix it. And one amusing thread where a poorly maintained and bodged up Supra nearly set fire to one tuner's workshop.

How much have you got to spend as that's going to make all the difference. Spend enough and you'll have one that is only a few years old.

Well, dont have this misconception that the supra wont cost you money in repair costs.....cause it will...purely cause they are supercars, demand a lot of TLC, and with the age things will go wrong and it will cost to put right. Very few supra specialists know what they are on about, and the ones that do, dont come cheap.

Supras are bullet-proof compared to the cars you mention. The engineering is easily up to or better than Porsche. The TT has to be the best bhp per pound spent. I ran mine over 4 years and nothing ever went wrong. It was 13 years old when I sold it - no leaks, no smoke just a fantastic car!

Porsche Boxster? What's the retail on one of those? Sure you can afford one.

 

My 12 year old Supra had a power steering problem where the pump and rack were refurbed in the first 6 months. 2 weeks after getting it back the crankshaft pulley literally broke in two peices. Both problems are quite common apparently, and not cheap.

 

Good rubber that lasts aint cheap, but worth the extra money. All Supras come with a hole in the fuel tank (at least mine seems to have one). Servicing needs to be frequent.

 

Great cars though. Best looking and performance is excellent.

I should imagine the running and servicing costs are a fair bit cheaper then your boxster !??!

 

surely the tyres/brakes etc are the same if not more expensive too.

 

A friend of mine paid over £1,000 for a service on his P reg BMW M3, which i found highly amusing. I think the most i've paid is around £300 which included new sparks, good oil and brake fluid change.

 

You'll probably need a complete new set of tyres once a year too = aprox £450. but depends how much and how aggressive you drive.

 

Good set of Brake pads are about £130 a set probably last you a couple of years.

Any car can be expensive to run, reliability is good on supras and i would argue that parts are cheaper than a lot of euro parts(i.e german) heater matrix is the ultimate fear as costs over 1000 to do, however my local fiat dealer told me that they did a heater matrix on a fiat punto and it cost £1200 so it would appear that parts can shaft you no matter what you drive, biggest cost is fuel, brake components are similar in cost to most other large cars, head gaskets, turbos etc will cost if they go but show me a car where these are cheap, again turbo for a fiat punto gt over £900, you can probably service a supra cheaper than a new car that requires main dealer service, and some of the best people to do the job are on here, Lucipher for one, good luck

Both the Supra and MR2 turbo I have had have been a mark of reliability. If you buy a stock Supra, I wouldn't anticipate any serious issues if the mileage isn't astronomical and if it's been looked after.

 

All cars can fail. I had an almost new X-Type Jag, £30k it cost. In the year I had it, it went back 13 times. Not for little things either, gearboxes, driveshafts, propshafts, mechanical failings, electrical failings etc etc etc.

i've owned my supra for 4 months and it's cost me nearly 1500 quid, but for that i got an rps fast road clutch which was 460 just for the clutch,cambelt change,new front tyes 19/235/35 and a few over bits and bobs. clutch was a prob though, snap ring kept pinging of the sleave. all sorted now though and do not regret buying her even if i was unlucky. puts a smile on my face every time, even if i have got an empty wallet.

The running costs on the boxster were quite cheap, nothing ever went wrong and the servicing was cheap too!

 

Only reason i sold it was because im trying to pursue a pro footie career and im not working so couldnt justify keeping a £40k car when all i was doing was eating into my money, so i sold it for a £15k car and spent a couple of grand on mods.

 

Since i had the new pug its been in the garage nearly once a month! crazy! so im glad i had the warranty.

 

Ive now been offered my fave car on this board and im dearly in love with it so im wondering weather to purchase it..... mods have all been done and its quite famous on this board!
