NIALLRUSSELL_HO
Hello to everyone.Picked up my j-spec 1996 facelift twin turbo yesterday. Pictures and info to follow. Just a quick basic question for the moment. How long should i let the car idle before i switch it off? Need a turbo timer as soon as, since i keep forgeting. Thanks for the help
LeeT
depends on how hard you've driven the car. i tend to let it cool down for a minute sometimes two but i usually drive the last mile or two off boost

MR.B
Personally I wouldn't bother with a turbo timer mate - best and safer just to stay with the car before your turn it off. Insurance companies don't like them either.

Andy Supra
I drive the last 3 miles home slow without boosting, then leave it between 1-2 minutes. If i've had a long 50+ mile drive and driven it hard a fair bit I leave it 2-3 mins.
colsoop
I have mine linked in to my alarm system, press a button take out the keys lock and in 2 minutes it turns itself off. Its a clifford alarm with intellistart.
chilli
drive home off boost for a few mins then mine is set to just 30 seconds (I still wait with the car but the timer helps to stop me forgetting and switching it straight off). If it were straight after a full out drive I'd probably allow 2 or 3 minutes at least, that's why I usually just drive gently on approach to my destination
Ulrik
2-3 minutes usuly do the trick Depending on how hard you drive..
Guest dee_rz
if you have really driven the car hard then 3 mins, if you have only driven around slow with barely any foot to the floor moments then 1 min, basically a sliding scale from 3 mins depending on how hard you have driven, a turbo timer or most as mine does idles the car at normal cars idle rpm but ideally for at least 30 seconds after a hard drive you should sit in the car for 30 seconds and hold revs at 1 and a half thousand rpm then let the turbo timer do it's thing or let it idle for the rest of the required time, 1.5krpm is the idea rpm for a turbo cool down, apparently due to the way it will curcuilate the oil through the turbo better (all for race tuner books.. top tip )

jamesmark
I am blessed with a fiance thats takes her time getting out the car............hair...................lipstick.......... so i have plenty cool down time, also take it easy when approaching home. i would say mines is always at least 45 seconds. MrDriver
An another question about cooling down, is it OK to put the heater on max the last few minutes, so the engine bay coolst down? I don't really know if it helps? Cheers, Peter
paul mac
turbo timer = complete waste of money, i fitted one ages ago but now never use it, if you want to know exactly how your engine is doing fit an oil temp gauge, after a "spirited" run it can take up to 15 minutes slow cruising to cool the oil down, you will find with a temp gauge leaving the car stationery (with no air moving through it) running on a timer the oil temp will start to creep up again
stupra
I've not bothered to fit a turbo timer, I just sit in the car for a couple of mins after a drive. I also do what alot of others have said, an drive off boost for the last couple of miles to where i'm going.
penguin
2 min should do it after a long run on the motorway or a hard drive - else 1 min
