Does high mileage matter

When you are on a budget, high mileage often comes into the equation.

I have seen several Supra Turbo for sale at quite low price.

One such car is at a garage in Gloucester and is in emmaculate condition inside and out.

It is totaly standard and untouch but does have 100k on the clock, just turned.

I know that big engines are probably good for well over double that with serviceing but what is the general concensus on higher mileage cars.

How many on this forum have Supra Turbos over the 100k mark?

If a car was immaculate and had service history then that mileage would not deter me too much although you would have to bear in mind that with that kind of mileage things are going to need changing sooner rather than later. I think that providing the asking price reflected the mileage then I would consider a car like this.

I bought a UK Spec Auto TT at 101k 18 months ago (Cambelt changed at 83,000) its now got 115k on the clock and the only thing i've had to change are break pads and fluids and two back tyres.

 

I've had no problems at all. The car still spanks practically everything on the road.

 

I have had no regrets buying a highish mileage Supra and would recommend it to anyone so long as you have a full service history. I also had mine checked by the RAC and the bloke could not believe what great condition everything was in considering the car was 13 years old and had 100k on the clock.

 

i'd recommend getting a UK Spec. it'll save you a fortune on insurance particularly if you are young. It worked out nearly a grand a year cheaper for me on a UK Spec instead of a Jap import.

 

You can pick up a standard UK Spec with about 100k on the clock for around the 7 to 8 grand mark. A bargain in my books.

Well if you think about it high milage isnt just an indicator of engine wear. Its also an indication on wear on the chasis, suspension and other moving parts such as bearings and wheels etc... At the end of the day you get what you pay for. Not saying cheap isnt good tho.

sure ......nothing :D not one problem at all

 

I had one serious problem which was my own fault :blush: i didnt get aux belt changed and it was over stretched and snapped :( but this would not of happened if i had got belt changed i just didnt check it. Completely my own fault.

 

Seriously my car has never missed a beat, i do my own servicing (plugs and oil & air filter) cheap to do (and very easy!). My biggest out goings on the car is fuel and tyres

Higher miles TT will tend to have the following problems,

 

Crank pulley shearing off,

Valve stem seals,

Rear wheel bearings,

Worn Ceramic Tubbies/Seals.

 

But these are cosumables, the engine itself if well looked after will see beyond 200k miles.

Hi,

 

My mkiv tt auto has done about 110K. Had it since 21K, had it for over 5 years now, for 3 years it was driving up and down the M23 daily. The only thing that ever broke was the electric window pulley wire. And believe me, there was no Miss Daisy in the back, Ive driven this car hard / fast.

 

I regulary service the car, over serviced in fact, changing the gear box oil / diff / coolant every 10K, oil 5k. I never spared any expense, always used toyota gen parts, and never cut corners. In return, Ive never broke down, never had problems, never got out of it feeling disappointed, infact, whenever I get out, Im always chuckling to myself about how fast it is, and that `push back into your seat thrust` :-)

 

Around 35K miles I swapped out the exhaust for a Nur Spec one, removing the second cat. Change the plugs, air filter etc. So, not overly BPU, but on the rolling road at TDI, it was showing 351bhp. So, even with basic bpu it still had no problems.

 

I must admit, Im not keen on buying a high mileage car, something about that mental block that anything over 100K is knackered. This probably comes from all of our school days when cars like cortina's / viva's were completely shot at around 100K miles. However, Toyota are tremendous cars / make, which is well known to handle this mileage. Take the Landcruiser, 180K+ miles, and they still go for big mileage.

 

I always buy german or jap, and if regulary serviced, good condition, honest service history, right price, then I cant see the problem. Mileages can be altered. I could clock my supra, loose 60K and you wouldnt know. Therefore, its all about condition, checks, servicing.

 

I know guys that feel that body work is far more important than engine, as its easier to swap an engine than a rusty shell.

When I was looking for my Supra I saw so many 'low mileage' supras that were blatantly clocked! I don't think it matters too much if you have a high miler as long as it's been looked after well. Mines about 105K now but looks and drives better than alot of supras with considerably less mileage!

IMHO low milage is only important on newer cars.

 

On cars of this age, (Average Supra is now probably about 10 years old), most parts that would suffer from high milage would probably have deterorated due to age. Rubber bushes as seals are just as likely to need changing where they've gone hard or cracked up.

 

Obviously wear on the mechanical side of things is a different ball game, but Supra's don't really suffer in this area either. Unless they've been badly abused or neglected. Both of which you can normally tell when you view/test drive a car.

Where abouts in gloucester did you see the supra mate? Did you get it or have you got another one yet? I live in cheltenham. If your gonna go to a meet let me know.

I havnt purchased anything as yet. Want to test drive a few first.

The Supra turbo is at Gloucester Car Specialist in Bristol Road.

Im going for a test drive on Saturday.

You dont by any chance own the grey Supra that I keep passing by near Springbank in Cheltenham?
