rattling boot!!!

hi everyone,

i've just purchased a '93 n/a which seems to have developed a rattle on the way home!

on closer inspection the gas struts in the boot don't support the weight of the boot anymore. so basically i was wondering if the rattle was being caused by the play in the boot as the struts seem dead?!

the last owner said the car had been resprayed so maybe if any rubber stoppers were removed and not replaced properly it would cause a rattle... are these things adjustable?

if the boot is pushed up near the end with the latch when driving the rattle seems to stop so i'm pretty sure its the boot thats rattling anyhow!

would be grateful for any advice on this cheers

try replasing the rubber blocks as thay must compress over the years

try buying new gas struts. Search this site for them.

Try buying the rubber stops first and if that corrects the problem then you dont need to buy the struts. Get the rubbers from Mr T, they are not expensive

Hatch rubber stopper: 67293-14051 £4.18 each

Hatch rubber stopper screws 2 each: 90159-50116 £0.38p each

These rubbers sit near the rear lights and are usually the ones that break up.

There are other rubbers on the tailgate but I woul haveto look up pn.

agree try the rubbers first . but they wont keep the tailgate up , have a look in the for sale section there is a thread there which will give you the contact for new gas struts

Put some sponge over the rubbers and go for a drive, i did it and it stopped, can't be botherd to get new ones so i just keep the sponge there now

My boot is really hard to open though (brand new rubbers) so I suppose it's new struts time!

I did this, helped alot.

Changed the buttom 2 ones....

But i think there is also a set of rubbers on the top of the boot ?

I might also have to change the gas struts, since its hard to raise it, but atleast it stay up

The ones on the top of the boot are hard plastic (so they don't wear out they just knacker the bottom ones) - I bought a whole new set to replace them before i realised the tops weren't rubber, and they were more expensive than the bottom ones! What a waste of time. Just get the bottom

Ahh, then im all good then, since iv change my bottom once...
