Steve do you hear it when parked or moving slowly, when turning the wheel lock to lock? If it does, it sounds like your power steering fluid is either low, has air in the system or the pump is knackered and needs replacing.

Also check that the noise is not coming from the belt that goes to the power steering pump. The pump is located to the front of the engine rhs low down as you stand in front of the car. Top up the fluid first if it is low and see if that does the trick.

sounds like your power steering needs bleeding, it's an easy job. do a search on here and you should find plenty of info on how to do it.

Yes as the pump is belt driven from the engine.

bulbs on the stick would also point to air in the system.
