View Full Version : Meet/BBQ - Sunday 9th July 06 - Fighting Cocks Pub, Wendens Ambo, Essex
Hey all,
We have 26 members interested and may be losing 5 due to the date but hopefully not!
This should be a great day out and a chance to meet other members, discuss our prides and joyes and munch a few burgers washed down with some good beer (or wine, spirits etc!:d ).
ANYONE who wants to come along is welcome and by all means bring a m8 or the missus as it's a family pub with a good sized beer garden and if the weather is kind, will be fun for everyone.
There is the option of camping the night before (Saturday 8th July) for anyone who's interested which hopefully will allow any members from further afield to attend.
The event is for Essex Air Ambulance which is a worthy charity that have saved many a motorist's life by being able to administer treatment straight away and get them to hopsital faster than by road.
We will have a raffle on the day with some prizes and some t-shirts and trophies for various aspects of the cars on display. The T-Shirts will be £5 per shirt and all the money will be put into the charity collection at the end of the day.
If anyone would like to help or has an idea that may help to improve the day for us all, please PM me so we can discuss it.
Paul Whiffin of Whifbitz will be on hand to help with any technical queries I'm sure and will be bringing a handful of some of the nicest, extremely powerful Japanese performace cars around in addition to anything elsa he feels like! (may be doing some E-Manage mapping but that's for him to decide as would the likely cost).
What I should stress most is this day will be about having a good laugh, enjoying some good grub, drinking a few pints and meeting the faces/people behind the usernames and raising some much needed money for a worthy cause.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the day and please add your username to this list if you wish to attend to help me gauge the amount of food we will need!:

No probs guys will be good to have you in attendance and as I said the more the merrier!! :D
For anyone wanting to come down on the Saturday, I'll camp out with you guys to keep you company!! Picked up a very reasonable 2-man tent yesterday so will be good to give it some use!! There will be breakfast available Sunday morning in the pub and it'll be open till midnight for a few drinks, pool darts etc!! Let me know if your interested please guys and gals!
I should add it'll be a £10 donation to start with and that covers the first burger, hotdog etc and starts the charity collection.
Still coming up with events, prizes etc but any input will be more than welcome!!! :)
Looking good but we can handle double the number of current attendees!!!! So please keep them coming!!! Will be a great day and a good chance to meet other like minded owners.
Thanks again,
Pete :)
Good news!!!! :D
I e-mailed Steve Chalmers at J-Tuner who has included a letter in Issue 14 promoting our little meet! :D He also would love to do a feature and will let me know once he's spoken to the rest of the team.
Provided the weather holds out (today is NOT a good sign!!;) ) we should have a great turnout of classy Supe's with a smattering of other top Jap Marques as well!
I'm going to get in touch with Thor today regarding the dyno but notice no one has really expressed any views on whether they would want to use this?? If not, it's unfair to get someone on site for nothing so can we please start some numbers for power runs to give me an indication on possible demand.
I'm also organising the T-Shirts at the moment which will be a fairly simple design but will mark the occasion and at £5 will be a nice memento!
Any more for any more?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?! :eyebrows:
All the best and i'll keep you all posted! :)
Cheers,
Pete
Have you got a postcode for the pub, so i can work out where it is on Tom Tom
Hi M8,
No worries i'll get the postcode sorted today and stick it up ASAP! :)
The general area is Wendens Ambo which is just after Newport (the Essex one not the Welsh one!!!;) ) near Saffron Walden.
I'm going to sort out the directions for everyone nearer the time and post up the different approaches people need but will get the postcode for anyone who wants it.
Latest on the Dyno
===============
- I spoke at length with Peter from Thor yesterday afternoon and he's working out some prices for us. He reckoned a maximum of 12 power runs on the day as they need time for setting it all up and dismantling it at the end of the day plus, it's the type that connects to the hubs so takes a bit longer to setup but gives more accurate results. Peter may even bring the Thor project Supra along!:eyebrows:
see here: http://www.thor-racing.co.uk/THORThunder-191.asp
Which would be intersting to see!!
I will post the prices up once known but can anyone interested PM me to confirm your interest (Obviously I can't ask Peter to pack all the gear up, drive 2 hours to the location, unpack and set all the gear up and then no one does a power run!!).
I know I personally would love to see Paul Whiffin's beasty scream it's nuts off and find out what kinda power it's packing and Thor are the guys to do the job!! (just did the Envy Supra so the equipment is up to the job!) They operate as a 4 man team (those hub monitors weigh 1/2 tonne apparently! ) and are professionals as some of you will know if you've used them before so cars will be well cared for.
Let me know please peeps! :)
Cheers,
Pete
Smarty,
Postcode as requested: CB11 4JN
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you!! :)
I trust that EVERYONE who has said they will attend is subscribed to this thread??;)
Just that no one has added anything to date and it's a little tricky trying to organise things for everyone when I don't know what you are looking to do one the day?!
Can I get a list of those interested in getting a dyno session please (prices will be posted once known and this is NOT obligatory if you put down your name!!):
1. Peter P
2.
Just copy and paste the above and add your name please boys and girls.
Also, who wants a T-Shirt or 10?! :D They will be costing £6 each and a demo will be getting posted asap for people to see. Just need to know approx numbers and sizes for now.
More to follow but please can you POST something, ANYTHING to stop me thinking this is for my benefit and no one is reading it!!!! ;)
Thanks,
Pete :)

Ah this is turning out to sound like a class meet.
Maybe I should ditch the family holiday to come.. well maybe not eh. :(
It's a FAMILY orientated pub!!! ;) :d
Maybe a delayed start is in order?!
:innocent:

I really don't think I'd get away with that, although Laura was dissapointed that we couldn't go to the Alton towers meet either.
Hopefully if the event goes as i'm planning it'll be one for the calendar and may be repeated every year! :)
As I said it's not everyday you can go to a meet chat with other members, get a dyno run, good BBQ grub and a pint or three, a t-shirt to mark the occasion and a chance to win a few goodies on the raffle!!!!!
Plus, camping the night before if your that way inclined and a good hearty breakfast prepared by the landlady for a minimal charge!!! (we call her fry up 'heart attack on a plate'!!!!:d ).
Anyone who's attended any of the big shows will know how hard it is to get a dyno run due to the huge crowds and number of people waiting where as with this if your interested in seeing what power you've got it's 99% sure you can do it! (pending enough initial interest to make it worthwhile getting Thor to come).
Gone are the days of sitting in the car in Tesco's carpark with pouring rain and a cold sarny and an orange juice!! (sounds like a school trip!)
The other most valuable thing is this is a charity event and that's enough said really!
So come on peeps sign up,sign up and be part of the 2006 Wendens Ambo Meet!! :d

Im gonna try to come and get alis to come too.
Will confirm later.

Hi Pete,
keep up the good work... and I'll go for the power run as well....
1. Peter P
2. SteveL
All - Petes already put a huge amount of effort into this, so it would be a shame not to make the effort to come along...
Not that its a golden carrot - but I can see a great opportunity to show some of the local 'car park' boys what real cars are all about... I'd love to see the faces on the nova boys when 20 odd supras turned up in the car park...:d :d :d
( I know - very childish, but sometimes the smallest things keep us sane)
I know it would also be good to put a few names to faces as I've rarely had the chance to get to other meets and catch up with the locals on here......
Cheers guys for the latest input, will wait to hear from anyone needing to clear it with the missus etc!! ;)
Right it's crunch time so I need to know how you all want me to play this!! I now need to know the number of people in attendance, whether you would like t-shirt(s) and what sizes you want, what eating requirements you may have if not happy with burgers, hot-dogs, chicken legs etc and if you want a power run from the boys at Thor.
If I don't start seeing any responses on this thread then as much as it pains me to do it, i'll have to start PM'ing you one by one to get the feedback I need. This isn't unreasonable IMHO as I need to get the groundwork sorted out ASAP to insure we all have a great day and without these details it'll be hit and miss which I don't want (hopefully you all agree with me on that?!).
I'll kick off:
1. Peter P - Just me - 5 x T-Shirts (XL) - No special eating requirements - Interested in power run dependent on cost.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.
And so on.
Sorry if you find this a nuisance but it really is the only way to do it and make sure everyone gets what they want out of the day.
Will leave this 2 weeks from today and then start PM'ing anyone who hasn't responded.
Thanks again and if you have any problems, drop me a PM or post up here and i'll get back to you ASAP.
Cheers,
Pete :d

A quick update:
7 responses down, 21 to go!!! :search: Looks like i'll be PM'ing a fair few next week!! ;)
Anyways,
Hopefully those of you who buy J-Tuner will have noticed the letter I submitted to Steve Chalmers (Scary Steve to the old skool FastCar readers!!) who gave this event a nice spot in the letters section (page 39) for anyone not on the forum who wants to attend.
I'm still waiting to hear back from Pete at Thor about the dyno but we will need a minimum of 10 power runs I would imagine to get them to join us.
After some discussion with my cooks the general opinion is to scrap the chicken legs as they take ages and are in need of constant attention and stick with the burgers and hotdogs. I will also probably try to get some nice juicy steaks if I can get them for a fair price!! (don't suppose we have a butcher in the club who could help out do we?!).
Keep the feedback coming guys and I'll keep you all updated on any developments.
Thanks again!
Pete :)
On behalf of Pete... pics of the t-shirts and umbrella :d

Hey All,
Just to clarify the prices on the T-Shirts and brollies for those interested:
T-Shirts = £6 per shirt (not bad considering these are hand applied not machined and the T-Shirt is Fruit of the Loom)
Umbrella = £15 per brollie (These are the golf sized ones and again have the Supra vinyl applied by hand but are very nice with carbon handle etc)
I seem to be a few short on replies (like 20 odd!;) ) so will be sending a PM to those not on the list in the next day or two.
STILL trying to get some prices from Pete at Thor for the hub dyno runs! Geez it's tough getting to him! a VERY busy guy! :d
Will update you all as things develop and if any of those keeping an eye on this thread have contact with those yet to respond can you give them a shout for me please!!
As explained the last thing I want is people going without food or t-shirts/umbrella's!! These things need some preparation!! :)
Thanks again all and see you in 6 weeks(ish!)
Pete

Hello Again!! :d
I popped over to see Steve L last night armed with an XL T-Shirt just to see how it measured up! Looked like it would swamp his nimble frame but actually wasn't that far off the mark!
Subsequent to which he has changed his order from Medium to Large. I think these Fruit of the Loom sizes are on the small side personally so would suggest people go up a size from their normal choice i.e large = XL XL = 2XL medium = large etc. I will have a fair few extras on the day so can always change them but worth a thought!
Thanks again and please keep the feedback coming as it helps me out with getting things organised! :)
PM's start today so hopefully I can start getting the merchandise made!!
Thanks again,
Pete
See below the table of chest sizes and how they correspond to the size of T-Shirt's for consideration when placing your orders:
Size S M L XL XXL 3XL*
Chest (to fit) 35/37 38/40 41/43 44/46 47/49 50/52
We can also organise female T-Shirts and kids as well but will probably extend the prices for say a month after the event and supply some order forms for anyone needing shirts or umbrella's after the day as it is a big enough logistical nightmare trying to get the mens ones done!! :d
The deadline for guaranteed orders is 09/06/2006 which is the last day before I need to let the guy doing the work know what to order. Any one not specified by then will have to take a chance as there will be a few spares on the day but you may have to get them afterwards as we simply can't afford to have a huge stock on the day. The point i'm making is................ GET ORDERING NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
Any queries please post here or PM me.
Cheers,
Pete :)

yup they are. we had some t-shirts made for us a while back. and was always advised to go 1 size up with FOTL...

Bad news on the dyno front! :( Seems Thor are unavailable so it's a no go unless we change the date!! Not sure what you all think as to whether it's worth doing as we have had a limited number of replies to getting a power run so might just leave that side of things off but it's what you guys and girls think that counts????
Some people have raised the point that Sunday 9th July is the football world cup final!!!!
The event would probably kick-off at 9am and run till say 6-7pm and I imagine unless England make the final it won't be as important to watch? (hides behind large object to protect himself!) If it is, there will be a TV in the pub which is surely where most football matches are watched??????
If not, can I get an indication of who would like to postpone the event a week or two???????
Pain in the butt as J-Tuner advetised it for us but I may be able to get them to put a re-draft in next month's issue if necessary!
Your comments please peeps!! :)
Pete

Peter, i have seen this :) I need to have a read when i get a spare 5 minuites. This maybe dependant on the world cup! http://www.online-assault.com/images/f_england.gif
I'm tempted to postpone this until the end of July as the weather should be good by then and this won't clash with the World Cup!! In addition, I would really like to get Pete from Thor to attend so we can stick a few cars on the rollers to see what they can do!! :d
The new dates would be either:
- 30th July
- 23rd July - but would mean no camping probably as there are bands booked in for the Saturday 22nd July.
Otherwise, we can go into the beginning of August but not my preference!! ;)
The reason being we are trying to do this for charity and get as many people to attend as possible and raise some money but I know the world cup final will draw a fair number of owners/enthusiasts even if we don't reach the final!!
Can we all still give me the other details i.e food requirements and t-shirt/brollie orders so I can get these done regardless but I need to know your thoughts on changing the date??
Either PM or stick them up here for us all to see!! :d If we still have 99% of the people listed available and not fussed about missing the final then will probably go ahead as originally organised!
Let me know ASAP please people.
Cheers,
Pete
30th of july would be excellent my big single will be on and tune complete etc on 15th july so 30th july sounds good to me august also fine for me, would be nice if we had a definate from j tuner too would be a great write up for us and them, would make a great feature

Awesome motors hey.
Ok it's official - this is cancelled for July 9th and all of July!
August is fine so can we check the Sunday's in August please guys and girls namely: 6th, 13th, 20th or 27th??????
I will need to relay this past the landlady to make sure she hasn't got anything booked in for any of these but let's assume any of them are possibilities!
As for kids attending not a problem whatsoever m8!! :d This is a family day and a chance for everyone to attend and make a bit of money for a good cause so no one will be turned away!! :)
In fact, all kids get free admission/attendance so by all means bring them along.
There is a train station nearby as well which being a Sunday will be free parking so any non-jap performance cars can be stashed 2mins up the road. To be honest anyone who likes jap cars and wants to see some big power supes, rx7's, skylines and anything elsa that attends should come over!!
Would love to make this an annual meet and the equivalent of a 2nd Bolney!!! :d :d Although 2,000 cars may be a bit of a tight squeeze!!! ;)
I will see if I can get the guys to bring the bouncy castle as well so the kids can do some things they enjoy as well.
I can't stress enough this is a FUN day out for ALL enthusiasts and jap performance car owners so anyone you know who would enjoy this sort of thing give them a shout and ask them to join us! Whilst the Supe's will hopefully be the central attraction and the best represented, any jap performance beasties will be welcome!! :)
Also give me some feedback via PM or this thread to add anything you feel is missing or that may be worth looking into to improve it! I want to insure EVERYONE (or the majority at least!!) has a great time so don't hold back on suggestions.
Lets start the bidding for August then please peeps!
All the best,
Pete
Edit: forgot about Donny South on the 13th. so im good for all them days apart from 13th.
:D
13ths out for us...going to donny..but can make any other weekend!!

I could do the 19th or 27th.. If it's still ok to come.
Might be worth posting yet another thread with a poll with the dates. Just ensure it's a multi selection one..

Ok, So we can scratch the 6th and the 13th which leaves either Sunday
20th August or Sunday 27th August??
Both days are fine for me/ the pub and the only consideration I'm waiting on is when Pete from Thor can attend and bring the dyno along. I will e-mail him again today and advise we have narrowed it down to 2 possibilities from the original 4 we suggested.
Can we start a new list for which of the above dates is ok for peeps please?!
I'll start:
1. Peter P - Both days are fine

Right. Now that i've got the Summer School Fete I did for my nephews and neices last Saturday, I am 100% focused on getting this meeting organised.
Steve Chalmers has been in touch from J-Tuner to find out when we are hosting this as he may well be able to attend and bring a snapper with him for a future article in the mag which is great.
I've mentioned the last 2 Sundays in August which is where we got to before it went all quiet!! ;)
So it's a choice of:
- Sunday 20th August
or
- Sunday 27th August
I've had a few peeps post their agreements but am still quite short of the original list and have spoken with some of you at The Japshow, School Fete meet and the Ace Cafe night who thought it sounded like a good event and one they would like to attend.
My first priority is to fix a date which will be suitable for the majority of you to attend so more comments on the 2 possibilities above please!!
The cause is now changing to Medics who also do a lot of very good medical deeds including roadside accident assistance etc. The reason for the change from Essex Air Ambulance is that despite e-mailing them on several occasions for their input, I still haven't heard a word back!! :( Considering this is a fund raising event we are doing off our own backs and is costing them nothing, I'm a bit put off by their lack of professional courtesy!
Pete at Thor doesn't wish to travel to us so the rolling road may be a no-go unless we can find someone elsa before then. Otherwise, we could arrange an afternoon session somewhere for the convoy to go and do some power runs which would be a memorable journey with 30+ supra's!!!! :d
Any thoughts or suggestions please add here or PM me.
All the best,
Pete :)

Anymore 4 anymore?!?!?!?!?!?! :search: ;)
We had a considerably larger number of people showing some interest in this originally yet only 12 confirmed so far?! I really need to get a date finalised to organise things properly so can anyone who likes the sound of a casual meet with a few beers and a burger or 2 sign up ASAP please!!!!!
This is for a good charitable cause and if we get J-Tuner to attend, could prove to be a really good day out.
Any queries, either post them up or PM me.
Thanks all,
Pete :d
on holiday in spain from august 20 till 31:)
Hi Guys and Girls,
The good news is the pub have nothing booked in for August so we can have our choice of the last 2 Sundays (either 20th or 27th), the bad news is with only 12 people confirmed despite previous interest reaching nearer the 26/30 mark I can't really see tehe point to be honest!
If we can't as a club get at least 30 cars to attend a fun, CHEAP (don't hear that word much with these cars!;) ) and entertaining day out with fellow owners in a non-competitive enviroment then what does that say about us a club?! The Scooby boys do LOADS of these type of events and earn considerable money for good causes and never suffer with a lack of attendees!!!
I'm not trying to throw my toys out the pram etc but i've tried asking for advice on what people would want from the day, cancelled the first date due to the world cup final, tried getting Thor to bring a dyno but they don't want to travel that far and with their recent actions against the club, it may be better to not have them there! I am asking for £10 a head to the charity which also covers the first burger or whatever, trying to organise some prizes for a raffle, got some gorgeous crystal awards being engraved for best on day, nicest engine bay, best ice install etc etc etc!!!!!!!!! I am really at a loss as to what I have to do to get some more interest?!?!?!?!?!
The location is about 15mins from the Stanstead junction of the M11 and is esay to get to, the carpark is being resurfaced today to eliminate the uneven surface and potholes, the landlady is looking forward to a good turn out and Steve Chalmers from J-Tuner wants to attend for some photos and a possible article in a future issue!!!!
If we can't make this work and start getting some proper numbers then I'll have no choice but to pull the plug which would be a great shame and my sincere apologies to the 12 who have asked to attend. I'm not willing to fund a huge number of items including food on the off-chance lots of people will show up on the day! This needs planning and a fair guess at number of attendees in advance if it's going to work properly.
Rant over and sorry if I seem touchy but I can't understand the lack of interest when I know from looking over our A-Z of members, there are at least 50 in Cambridge, Suffolk and Hertfordshire which are all in easy travelling distance of the venue. Just a shame that's all.

That would be a shame as I was looking forward to what would (hopefully still will be) my first meet.
Maybe it's my fault, since I've been able to attend, everyone has shyed away... :innocent:
Don't think it's you or anyone inparticular causing people to not attend ;)
I've met a fair few of the people from here at either the Japshow, My School Fete/BBQ thing we did in Kent or at the Ace Cafe night and was really impressed with how approachable and friendly most of us are. I can't understand why this is not a popular event as how many of these type of meets occur and where we are the only club to attend (decided it would be nice to have a MKIV exclusive meet so no other jap cars would be joining us)?? The car park meets and a pint in the local definately have there place in the scheme of things but this was an attempt at a Bolney-esque Supra event I would organise on a yearly basis (maybe even 2 a year if it proved popular enough!).
It would be for a good charitable cause and would be a cheap day out with cold beer, bbq food and a chance to chat with other members and see what they've been doing with their cars etc.
If it's the dates that are the problem then please say so and we can try a re-think for sometime that will be more suitable i'm not fussed but obviously want to get the maximum possible turnout!! It would be great if we did get a HUGE turnout and I had to make a last minute dash to Tesco for 200 burgers!!!!! :d ;) :d
I'll keep bumping the thread to keep it at the top of the list as I need to get a descision one way or another in the next week or two.
Cheers,
Pete :)

Peter, may I make a suggestion?
Ask an events mod to lock this thread/delete it or something, and get a new one started with the two proposed dates, and another list started? Maybe it's just me, but I get very bored stumbling through pages to find the relevant info!
ps. I'd be up for this if it doesnt clash with the southend meet thats being planned!
on holiday from 20 august till 31, school holidays ,im in spain back in september
As per letmeshowyou suggestion, am going to start a new thread with the two revised dates and transfer the names already on the list so if a mod can close/end this thread I'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
Pete :)
