Just put Supra on a diet.

As my car is only a weekend toy I thought I would get round to some basic weight removal, as a result I removed the following today:

1) Spare wheel (weighed more than I thought)

2) CD multiplayer (as above)

3) All tools and moulded holder

4) Cardboard boot covers

5) Rear floor mats.

Now I hav'nt been for a drive yet so I can't compare but I wondered two things. How much weight have I saved (forgot to put on scales) and how this will effect handling if at all?

Suppose next stage is to remove rear seats?

ps. Can't help thinking I have tempted fate and will now get my first puncture in 15 years of driving:rolleyes:

Ta all

Weight infront of the front axle and aft of the rear will affect the handling way more than weight between the axles...

Moving heavy objects like the battery to a low position behind the drivers seat will have a more substantial effect than removing sound proofing. Also don't make the rear too light compared to the front...the supra has a front biased weight distribution and you really want 50:50 to 49:51 IMO.

Thanks for replies fellas.

So if I just remove the rear seats aswell thats about as far as I should take weight removal from the rear?

Heavy leather UK's have already been replaced with aftermarket. That drivers seat weighs alot.

I wonder if the rear of the car will sit any higher because of this?

Yes, Fitting a small single on tubi mani will save weight, the battery will too...

Then you can swap the pulley's on the engine, Greddy, PHR and BL all have kits (NOT THE CRANK DAMPER!). Move the water bottle to the rear of the engine bay near the brake cylinder...and the rad overflow too if you like.

Don't know if any rads are lighter than stock...

ABS, air con, front bumper reinforcement, all speakers, door reinforcement bars, electric windows, electric mirrors, bin them all. Door and tailgate gllass changed to Lexan, you ain't even trying :) Ever picked up a full modern jap car loom? Basic electrics and you could lose a load of weight there.

What you have removed so far will make bugger all difference. Go on a diet, get a thinner bird, etc will work better. Saving 1% weight to gain performance you wont notice, and going without a spare wheel, multiplay (oh yeah they weigh a lot) etc is useless. What is this paranoia with weight and Supra's? Ryan Woon would be an interesting man to talk to on this subject.

BTW there is virtually no removable sound deadening in a Supra. Toyota used the foam on the back of the carpet, a bulkhead sheet, and a few bitumen mats as the entire soundproofing of your car. About 4 to 5 kg in total.

If you wanna go quicker, then tune it ! :D

I challenge anyone to say that their passenger @ say 12 stone made their car feel slower. It's all in the head i tell you, unless you shed substantial weight. The carbon bonnet is worthwhile but the wings weigh little to start with. Recaros help. But you need to add up quite some weight loss before your stop watch times get worthwhile better.
