Alloy Wheel Sizes

Hey all, a quick question, I've been looking up about alloys, as I'm looking to buy some.

Currently my car has 17" wheels, and they probably looked quite good new, however they're in pretty poor condition, and two caps have disappeared :(

So, I'm looking to replace them. I was thinking of just buying the alloys, and using the rubber I've got as its in pretty good condition, but would it be worth going bigger? Will I have any problems? Loss of traction etc.

Is there an optimum size, or is it just whatever looks good?

I was thinking 5-spoke, basic jobs and I had a quote of £400 fitted, using the tyres I've got already. Is it worth spending more?

The tyres are 2-35-45-17 & 2-45-40-17. Good sizes?

stock sizes for 17's are 235/45/17 and 255/40/17 so the tyres are ok (wouldn't want to go any narrower on the rears).

They might be 245 at the moment as the rears may only be 8" wide. 8" fronts and 9" rears with 225's and 245's is the minimum widths as stock.

Is £400 for a set of new wheels? If they are, they are far too cheap to be any good.

Your 17" stock wheels will give you the best handling. If you're on a budget then I'd suggest either getting your stock wheels refurbished, or buy a decent quality (and correctly fitting) set of wheels second hand.

I can supply brand new early or late model wheel caps if you need. Here is a pic of a late model centre cap.

Sorry, I should have been more specific, the alloy's are after market (16 spoke IIRC). I'll try and get some pics up later and see if anyone recognises them.

What would be a good price for some decent 5 spoke 17" alloys? Will they all fit the tyres I have? I've seen some I like from OZ Racing, though they are more expensive, are they any good or should I be looking at other brands? Although I'm not looking for anything too bling I'd be gutted if I parked next to a Nova and saw the same alloys on it ;)

Cheers for the advice!
