Alex C
Hi all I'm on the hunt for a Supra and took the oportunity to look at one local to me yesterday. Although it looked fantastic (lowered on TRD suspension apparently) , when riding in it at speed I could hear a noise from the rear of the car that sounded like a dull droning increasing in volume and slightly in pitch with speed. I owned a 300ZX that did this and it turned out to be a rear wheel bearing - are these common symptoms on a 90k mile sup? The thing that worried me is that it could be the diff, but surely the Supra rear diff is pretty bomb proof? If it is the wheel bearing(s), what sort of £££ would a replacement be inc fitting? Thanks in advance
Scooter
Rear bearings and diff problems are not common at all. Some instances of bearings being replaced on here, and apparently its a pain to DIY/quite labour intensive. I'd try and get the place to let you feel for play in the wheels when its jaked up. The supra can suffer from very loud rear tyre noise depending on the rubber, it could just be that?
Scooter
loads of useful info hear.............it seems it may be more common than i thought! http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/search.php?searchid=1020340

Alex C
Thanks - it was a private sale and I did not jack it up but the car seemed rock solid. The tyres were very wide though but there seemed to be tyre roar and soemthing else. I'm just thinking that the things that need doing to it (possible bearing, door handle re-spray, re-bonding of one of the rear spats) add up to a chunk which I should take off the asking price if I'm going to make an offer. It was difficult not to be seduced by its looks though:notworthy
Ben-san
Welcome to The Club Alex. Quite a nice car you've found there. I had a bearing replaced recently, which cost me £340. That included a half shaft too, because the bearing problem had been there for a while. The cost is justified by the amount of labour required - three hours work. Hope this helps.
