i've got loads of knock sensor datalogs and from them my reckoning is that occasionally (seemingly random, probably linked to station delivery and age) optimax reduces knock by a small amount. i generally use sainsbury's super.

have you noticed that shell don't advertise a ron rating for optimax anymore?

Optimax is the only one with agents in it to clean the valves though isn't it? Which apparently is pretty good and not harmful.

I heard that stations can have up to 10% of ANYTHING in the pumps before having to empty them and refill - so if the tanker driver is an idiot and starts putting diesel in the Optimax barrel, it could be a LOT lower RON!!!!

Unfortunately Ooop North where n00b and myself are, we aren't blessed with Tesco 99 yet :( so the choices here are Optimax, BP Ultimate or super unleaded. Though I have to say reading the reports on Tesco 99 - I'm not convinced it's any better than the others - the Bio ethanol content is commendable though

Yup, the tesco 99ron is popular with quite a few people on here because unlike optimax it clearly states the rating.... but I think that a couple of magazine tests have given it a slating. Personally I stick to optimax or bp ultimate, for some reason the car seems to start cleaner and run slightly smoother on ultimate than it does on optimax :conf:

Blimey! I find that very interesting seeing as you have an uber-single fitted.

During the great petrol rip-off of 2005 I used Sainsbury SUL for about three weeks. I found the car slightly smoother sounding with no 'pinking' or owt.

I only switched back to Optimax because everyone says to use it.
