Supra and Impreza STi comparison

I am currently the proud owner of a two year old STi (with Prodrive upgrade), which I bought new and have enjoyed enormously. My previous car was an MY00 Impreza turbo and I have variously owned an MR2, 306 XSi, BMW 323 and a Citroen AX GT.

 

I am getting itchy feet and I rather fancy buying a car I can tune up. I have to admit that this is partly prompted by driving the Castrol Tom's Supra in GT3 and GT4, which are just about my favourite cars in the game.

 

I have never driven a Supra in real life and I wondered if anyone here is familiar with both cars and could give me a few clues as to what to expect.

 

In particular, I am curious about the level of traction. Clearly it won't be as good as a 4WD car like the STi, but how careful do you have to be with your right foot in the dry. In GT4 (I know it's only a game, but it's all I have to go on at the moment) the Supra RZ will overwhelm its tyres in any of the first three gears and this makes accelerating hard from low speeds something of a fraught experience. Are real Supras like this?

 

How nimble is a Supra likely to feel compared to my STi?

 

I am not looking to start a "Supras are great, Imprezas are rubbish" thread (partly because Imprezas aren't rubbish) but I would very much welcome any reasoned analysis and I thought you chaps (and ineed chapesses if there are any out there) should know if anyone does.

ive owned a 98 STi Type R for the past year, and i have just got my first TT supra 6speed 3 weeks ago, love it but its very very different to the scoob, but u will have to just drive one first man, the best thing is the tuning potential is great!! 400bhp is achieved quiet easily, much more so than scoobs and is mega reliable too! i loved my scoob tho and i still think they are great cars!

traction is not too bad in dry depending on what power you have,race logic traction control makes getting the power down easy.

the torque the supra has is great and will put a big smile on your face:)

HI guys, slight hijack. Ive just had my tt r/road after a few mods, and bhp is 407.5 @ 1 bar. Easy to do and i would say not expensive. No further really without going single?. Oh yeh, 438 Nm torque, pull a fuc---- house down, hee hee. I have the data sheet with all the readings and will post up for you guys to view over weekend. Sorry for interupting, hee hee.

I am certainly expecting a Supra to be different. I have been driving scoobies for 6 years and I've enjoyed every minute of it, but I am looking for a bit of variety.

 

Considering:

  • I like Japanese cars
  • I like fast cars (that handle)
  • I want something I can tune easily

the Supra looks like a good bet.

 

... 400bhp is achieved quiet easily, much more so than scoobs and is mega reliable too! i loved my scoob tho and i still think they are great cars!

 

While the idea of 800+ BHP is superficially attractive (and funny) I do want a car that I can reasonably expect to drive a few thousand miles without detonating, but I have read about loads of 400+ BHP Supras that seem to run very well.

 

I would love to be able to buy a Supra as well as keep my STi, but I don't think I could justify it. I have three children, so if the Scooby goes, I'll need a family car and I have never really thought of the Supra as a family car ;) so I'll have to buy something boring as well.

As someone already said your best option is to take one for a good long test drive and see what you think.

 

The Imprezza and Supra are totally different cars to drive and not really comparable, the only thing they really have in common is they are both very quick turbo jap cars.

 

With both imports and UK spec supra's 400bhp is easily achievable, though the jap cars can very occasionally experience blown turbos (though I've only seen a couple on the forum in the past year or so). Mine is dyno'd at 430bhp and has been running like this for around 30k miles. Provided you maintain them properly they are extremely reliable.

Having extensively driven both the Castrol Tom's Supra (in GT4) and my own TT I feel I'm able to comment on the differences ;)

 

The Castrol Toms Supra (CTS) has the ability to hit a brick wall at 170mph and just carry on, it can be driven on the rev limiter for lap upon lap without complaining, never needs servicing and doesn't use any petrol. It has unscratchable paintwork, 6 speed tiptronic gearchange and it always seems like good weather when you're driving it.

 

Furthermore, upgrading the CTS costs no money and doesn't result in continual earache for months on end when your wife finds out just how much the single turbo conversion really cost :D

 

On the other hand, nobody looks at you when you're walking down the street and thinks "He's got a Supra in GT4" :respekt:

After a while going round and round the same track can be boring

You can't impress your mates when you go round to pick them up with a game CD in your hand.

 

TBH a real Supra handles nothing like the CTS, sounds miles better and is a joy to own, but I think before you set your heart on one, you really ought to drive a real one, rather than a pretend one ;)

Mate, the Sup's rear seats are perfect for kids! ;)

 

As for Sup Vs Scoob you'll only ever get biased views on here (and rightly so!:) )

 

My mate has a modded MY00 classic but totally loves my Supra. He only had a decat on his Impreza before. Then he drove my standard Supra and couldn't believe how quick and nimble it was. He's since spent ££££'s on his Scoob cus he doesn't want me to be quicker! :D This is all pointless mind because I'm going BPU in a couple weeks and I'll still have him! :p :D

 

But the best thing imo is the looks. The Sup is sooooo much better looking! I'll never forget over hearing my mates missus telling him she liked my Supra so much better than his Scooby!:D

one thing i've noticed is where the Supra definitely has an interior that makes the Impreza look like an escort or something.

 

one of the first things that most people comment on the 'cockpit' style dash arrangement, wrapped around the driver :)

 

i often wish the supra had the same launch as the impreza but as has already been said, they are totally different cars in that respect
