Hi guys. Just joined and am seriously looking to buy a supra TT. Would like a Uk car(insurance), and manual. How much do you reckon I should be looking to pay? I don't really mind the mileage as long as its been well looked after.. And preferably only limited(or no) mods, again for insurance purposes..

Any ideas?

Cheers:)

Hmm...Whats the difference(price wise) between the j-spec and uk-models(ish obv). insurance is an extra £500 or so.. Plus there seems to be a difference in power/trim etc..?

do a search mate. has been long debated on here and there will be positives and negatives for each of them (although i will say the UK's had leather and the bigger brakes as std).

speak to jurgen on here (just do a search for him and check out his site), he's very well regarded on here and has imported cars for lots of members before. he'll be able to give you a rough figure for a freshly imported car.

oh, and welcome!

i'm in a similar position to yourself but after looking around i'd go for an import, the money saved on the purchase will more than make up for the slight increase in insurance

Welcome , please use the search.

Typically any money you'll save on the initial purchase will probably be lost on insurance over the years on a JDM, especially if you're young.

You will find more selection of imports for less money with usually unverifiable mileages, most should be geniune though. UK manuals are tough to come buy as there arnt many around, and decent condition ones are even harder to find, so like most you'll probably end up with an import if you're after a manual.

get an import, especially if you want a manual, much better choice, so you are more likely to find exactly what you want rather than settle for what you can get from a limited number of higher priced cars. Most j-spec comes with mods worth having too, sometimes you can get a lot for the £ :) good luck!

PS: not all insurance companies charge more for an import, and even when they do, it's not always a lot - certainly you can get a good deal where the difference is small enough to not really care about.

and, finally, things like brakes can be upgraded at your leasure. For example, second hand, the uk front brake swap might only cost you £200 or so, hardly a show stopper.

my front uk calipers cost £70, and they are from a much newer car than I would have been able to afford anyway lol

that's bloody good mate, i have to say.

is it a no-no to do front calipers and then rears separately? will it give a braking bias towards the front? :search:

thanks guys am now leaning towards a j-spec, although will have to get the ins quotes done. How does it work with respect to mods.. can you just insure the basic car, without the mods?

I havn't fitted them yet, no spare time, but I will soon! Anyway from what I gather from reading other posts, basically you can do the fronts on there own and it's a vast improvement on it's own. Ideally you would do the rears too, as you say to balance things up, but this is of much lesser significance. Most of the weight is transfered to the front when you brake hard anyway, this is where all the effort goes. So in an ideal world, do front and back together, failing that, do the fronts first and see how you find it, I don't think the rears will be urgent.

yes but that was a bit of a one off that caused a bit of a stink wasn't it? :D

admitedly there was a bit of a cafuffle (spelling) about the ebay auction, but if I hadn't of got them someone else here would have lol. I'm not saying you will get them for the same price, just that there are bargains around, heck even the brand new price is cheap for what you get :)

Most places don't insure like for like anyway. So if you wreck your bodykit you get the standard Toyota parts in replacement.

yeah what bobbeh said, the money you spend on the UK car will soon be made up by the hefty insurance price on the jspec, i searched every were for jspec insurance an the closest i got to a UK spec was £1000!!?? off. not sure were everyone insures but i couldn't find a reasonable jspec prcie anywere, maybe because of my age (22).

price for uk manuals varies alot dependant on mileage an history...there are couple knocking around with high miles for around 9-10k, an i have seen low mileage cars with good history go for around 14k which is not too un-common.

took me 1.5 years to find the manual i was after an prior to that i had already given up an baught a uk aut:( .

they can be found if you want one bad enough:p

good luck

an welcome by the way:D

I have a J-spec TT

When i first insured the Supe, i used A-Plan, they actually came out cheaper than Sky. They specialise in Jap Imports and will insure a uk or a j-spec for the same price. As long as it is a Supra they do not care.

I have no experience how they will help if i ever need to use them but they certainly seem ok. They will also allow basic upgrades at no extra cost, ie, wheels, exhausts.

I was 23 when i first got insured, 5 years no claims, 5 points for an SP30, i paid £920. I'm just about to reinsure, so 24, still have the 5 points and 6 years no claims, they supplied a quote of £840 after which i made a phone call and told them they could do better, they have dropped it to £770, this year again is with a £500 excess.

I called Sky again this time and got a quote of £790, however this was with a £250 excess. I am likely to stick with A-Plan as i will not have to pay out a £200 deposit with them as i am an existing customer. (based on monthly payment)

Hope this can help you out,

Christian

Good points Christian, I was with Aplan last year (Before the club scheme was set up) , this year they were the same price as Sky. However Sky do 'agreed value' so it was a no brainier really.

I pay £670 for a modified import, a UK would cost only £500. Either quote is ridiculously cheap for a 400bhp car - especially when you compare it to the quotes for RX7's, Skyline, etc.
