View Full Version : Ten of the Best 5
Brace yerselves, it's...
Ten of the Best V
This year, TOTB will take place on Sunday July 30th. That means you've got March, April, May, and most of June to get your name down and your times in. Pod, Crail, or Shakespeare County Raceway or previous performance at a recognised event is all good
The pitlane is going to be marked out better this year, and I doubt if the grandstand people will let Chris Mann down again so spectator seating should be much improved. I don't know any actual details yet, this is more a note to people who want to compete that they have three months to sort them and their cars out :)
Would the usual suspects please do the quote and reply namelist if you want to be considered to compete.
I'll kick it off ;)

Norfolk in chance unless the EMU is mapped (hint hint) :)
I would like to give it a shot but I want to wait to see how good (or bad) I do at Crail on April 9th. ;)
I would be interested, but my car wont be here until end of April time, and so I don't think I'll have time to prep. and practice.
What does it cost to enter ?

If my build is finished in time to get a run in before the end of May I would really like to have shot this year.
Is it clubs only?

I believe folks won't be considered for entry if they can't provide a good timeslip from a recognized drag strip. That's the way it's worked for previous TOTB events anyway.
I will come and watch
Oh FFS are you telling me Chris's email had typo'd the date?! Gah. Didn't think to question him, oh well, bonus, we get an extra 27 days :D
Apologies for the misleading info.

I edited your first post to change the date on it. The first email he sent out had the right date, the second one had a 3th July in the subject which is where the mistake must have come from.

ill be competing for a place.:)
Will there be a MKivSupra.net club area for parking this year?
with the number of events mods we have now I would hope there is a mkivsupra.net club parking area. There will obviously be the mkivsupra.net pits club stand including club gazeebo and club chairs :)

If no more bits are taken off my car.
just a reminder that we will need to see proven 1/4 mile times. We are happy to take proven 1/4 mile times from last year in to account as well so I think Envy might squeeze in to the runners list :) As in previous years I would assume CRD will be running as a mkivsupra.net car.

If I can get mine finished in time and to Avon park, I may be eligible.

Yeah maybe  Tbh - I've not even taken the car up the strip. I need to get the fuelling & the ignition timing setup on the dyno first .. before setting a time down.
if i get my single in time for this i'd love to do this, strokered 3.2hks build and a dbb bl67 will all surporting mods, just a case of when i can afford the turbo kit, just ordered and soon to have the clutch and flywheel for the job and fuelling and ecu too, all built just gotta get some more money now for the turbo kit :D will keep you informed, if you still have anyplaces
When do you need have times in for? As my next timed 1/4 mile is the 12th of March?
Well, the closing date for competitors to have their entries into the TOTB crew is 2nd July. Oddly that's a sunday unless Chris Mann has typo'd the email again ;)
This means that we have to have our team sorted out a couple of weeks before that in order for the entrants to book in and pay. If more than nine people (CRD are invited but they will take one of our spaces, that's just the way it works) want to and are able to compete on July 19th that's when I'll make the decision on who does based on proven performance. Again, that's times from pod, crail, shakespear co, previous TOTB events. It's not the size of your turbo or the BHP figure in your sig ;)
I'll take into account terminal speeds to some degree, as well as 1/4 mile times. If you've got a top speed run over 1.25 miles that'd be factored in too but they don't happen that often. If it comes down to the wire between me and someone else getting in then we will put it to the vote or something, I'm gonna play fair on this.
Also of note is that the top speed run this year is one mile only:
"The top speed trap will also now be set at a standing mile distance, to utilise a recognised distance for this part of the competition."
I think it's also because speeds are getting so high that the half a mile stopping distance was becoming a safety issue, so fair enough. Apart from that there is a points incentive to compete in all three disciplines, some other points tweakery, and the spectator bus for the top speed run finish line is back! :nana:

Whats the qualifying time for the club entry to TOTB?
Ian can I go down as a reserve for now please - got plans for the car coming together towards the end of the month and hoping I'll be competitive. I'll likely post a qualifying time at some point in June.
Cheers,
Brian.
Whats the qualifying time for the club entry to TOTB?
assume a 12.5 or thereabouts, but it will be based on best 1/4 mile times so if lots of 10 second cars come out of the woodwork then the available slots drop...:)
I will try to get discounted tickets sorted out earlier this time.
TDR, early june is the cut off on this so you need to have a 1/4 mile time by then.

thats a great list of names folks, but we need to start seeing times. All entries have to be in by the end of june, and its now 3rd June.
Based on Minkey Marks times from this thread
http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=29073
we have 10 spaces and the list for the first 5 stands as follows
1. CRD Supra
2. Envy
3. Christian Doran
4. Terry S
5. Ian C
Until we see times for anybody else the last 5 spaces are unknown. So people need to get those times in. As a benchmark Ian Cs time is 12.71.

Pulling out for personal reasons. Good to the rest of you guys!
I didn't get a chance to go to Shakespeare County Raceway for personal reasons alas. All I have to go on is my pb of 12.69 at Bruntingthorpe, during the TOC trackday.
It's going to sound :limp: but everyone's times there were bad due to an uphill track and a poor surface. If you don't believe me, ask the Envy crew as they were suffering from this as well :) Still not sure I'd reach the 11s at Elvington but I'm competitive (in class) in the top speed run and the handling circuit as well ;) And you know I'll show up! :D
Oh, and I also meant to say - the team list has to be in by the end of this month so it's time to name names and show times.

12.23 @ TOC & PB of 12.09.
So as it stands at the moment it's:
Leon - 10.02
Kevin Huntley - 10.5
Gregsupra4 - 11.2

just to clarify, the entry forms must be in by the 2nd July. So if your name is in this list
1. Leon - 10.02
2. Kevin Huntley - 10.5
3. Gregsupra4 - 11.2
4. Christian - 12.09
5. Justin - 12.15
6. Terry S - 12.37
7. Ian C - 12.69
8. Michel Lane - 12.71
then get your application form in right now. If we dont get 10 application forms in by that date then we lose the spaces, so the last 2 spaces need to be decided now. Theres a few cars out there with big singles that should run quick times (Jake for instance) so lets work out those last 2 spaces by 23rd June.
JB
It's looking doubtful whether I'll be able to get my car mapped and run a qualifying time before the end of the month :(
I'll try my best though.
Well, I just ran a promising benchmark time for a standard car at Crail today - 13.58 @ 103.4mph with 2.03 60ft on a crappy surface. Trying to get some mods sorted including hi stall / DR's (buying off a m8), line lock, box cooler and exhaust / decats within the next couple of weeks and will be fitting myself straight away. So I guess what I'm saying is that if there's a spare space I'd like to run as I'm certain I'll be running under 12.5's by the end of July.
Cheers,
Brian.

Ian, I've got a chequebook if you get stuck...
Is there a trailered catagory and a tesco trim one this year? It would be nice to give the "normal" roadgoing yet still bonkers fast cars a bit of recognition, as it's a bit shit having to put your pride and joy up against the trailer "queens"....that only come out for race day.
Erm out of interest who's car have I just slated by calling a Queen?? (ie who's coming on a trailer?)

Alex, this has been discussed many times mate, mainly by people with true road cars LOL. There was talk of having seperate classes a few years back but it never materialised. Also, then you would only get the guys with trailers parking 1 mile away and driving the car there ( like a few of us witnessed last year with a skyline).
Yes it is disheartening lining on the 1/4 up against a car you know has been built specifically for that purpose when you have just driven 250 miles to get there, and have the same to look forward to on the way home, but the empahsis of TOTB seems to have changed since TOTB1 from road cars to 1/4 mile/tuner specials IMHO.
I hope the trailered MKIV's do well this year though, as its a team event and we have been getting better over the years.
Any news on CRD? Oh BTW Leon is not sure if he is running or not!

Yeah I know, but a fully stripped out car with a Fuel cell where the back seat was hardly constitutes stock either.

Shame as with stock suspension I feel sure they could have troubled Cowie.

Yep, just heard from Chris that the CRD car is class X.
We've paid by the way, he will have the form by now.
It would be good if we can invite Steve W (DJ Imports) as he does well.
I have feeling we will get stuffed by the Vipers in RWD class. The GTR, Subaru, Evo teams will be very strong as well.
Gaz.
Where do I find the entry forms and payment details? I've scanned through this thread a couple of times but I can't see it.

I think the top speed challenge will be our best chance of getting points on the board, so it may be an idea as a team to concentrate on this. Although now they have reduced it to just a mile this may hamper things a little.
I got on the handling course TOTB3 but the queue was just too long last year and due to the delayed start I chose to concentrate on the 1/4 mile and the top speed run instead.

Reason's I have for using a Trailor:
1, If the car brakes down or is damaged at the event the AA won't collect you from a race circuit. Breakdown recovery back to Newcastle would be both expensive and time consuming.
2, The Trailor doubles up as a mobile Pit for Inspecting the under cariage of the car. (BTW if anyone wants to use this facility at the event they are more than welcome to)
3, It allows me to prepare the car for the event the night before. Ie Tyres, Race fuel, ECU Map, suspension, brakes etc etc. All that would take up valuable race time. It also means I can start my journey later so I can get a better nights kip.
4, Stops me putting miles on my pride and joy traveling to and from race events.
5, Saves on petrol costs.
6, Allows me to transport more parts to an event.
7, I am Lucky to have one so why not use it.:)
Theres probably more reasons but I can't think of them right now.
I will be driving the car down to Max Power Live and JAE this year just like I did last.

Kev,
No 8. Driving to an event means dead fly splatter all over the front. All those dead flys add weight. Too much weight equals slower time.
Not to mention that their little corpses break up the smooth flow of air over the front.

I think the only car attending that even has a hope against Keith (providing everyone stays reliable) will be Ron Kidell - should be pretty quick by then :)
well the forms had to be in by today (well officially tomorrow but no post on a Sunday) so if anybody on that list hasnt got their forms in then theres a chance you wont be able to compete.
I will call Leon today to discuss it with him as Im sure he wants to run really.
Lets keep ordering those club discount tickets as well please people.

I thought the spirit of this event was they were road cars, used as road cars. We all know Kevins car is fully road legal and seen regularly at events arriving under its own power.
I think the best testiment to this, was Dude towing everthing in a trailer behind his MKIV, competing, doing well, packing it all away and towing everything home.

I know I have accepted that its not about road cars now, its about cars capable of going on the road. The whole event has to be based around spectacle now, 11sec 1/4s are old hat, everybody expects the big guys to put in sub 10 seconds and whatever needs to be done to achieve that is pretty much allowed (which is why the CRD suspension thing caught me by surprise, I wasnt aware it was one of the few rules they had about changing the general structure of the car).
Thats one of the reasons why the 'stock turbo' challenge by the GT battle guys was going to be so good, you dont bother dropping in a fully tubbed suspension if you are on stock turbos, you focus elsewhere for power. Perhaps that can be an event for next year.

To all
Please find attached latest updates. We now have a full entry list, and it’s officially closed. We also have around 23 paid up reserves awaiting places, and there will no doubt be some minor tweaks over the next week until the shut off date for team changes.
Please also advise as to any changes needed to bhp figures etc before the list goes live on the totb website on Sunday.
We are able to offer full refunds immediately to anyone who drops out in the next week, due to the vast amount of people wanting places, so ask all your competitors etc to ensure they are fit to run and certain to attend as after the cut off date there will be no refunds and no further changes permitted team reps- please note the team numbers have now changed to suit the timing computer, so discard any previous competitor number lists.
Many thanks

Race fuel for use at TOTB?

Safety first...with the current heatwave I'd expect even BPU's to run Racefuel to stave off det. IC's are going to get heat soaked to buggery.
If it's as hot as this at the end of the month I predict a few engine going pop at TOTB....
And it's allowed by the rules so why wouldn't you? :)
And it's allowed by the rules so why wouldn't you? :)
It's a tricky one, different people read the rules in different ways.
Use of any commonly available road fuel is required at the event, there is a Shell garage within 15 minutes of the venue for Optimax. Any competitor wishing to bring fuel to site must use an approved container and leave it in the designated area for fuel storage and refills
I read that as saying you should be using pump fuel from a regular garage, others read it as saying you can use any fuel that makes a car move on the road.
Last year the wording was different:
Use of road fuels is expected and encouraged
Again it was open to abuse and as a result it got abused, in my eyes people should be using normal fuels, if their car can't run on it then it shouldn't be at TOTB. It's difficult, one of the chaps in the team I'm looking after has 500rwhp+ on race fuel but only ~400rwhp on Optimax, do I let him run anything he likes or do I keep things in the spirit of the event and say he can run race fuel because others are?
They need to be more specific on what is and isn't allowed in the same way as they are on tyres this year.

I think very few cars run Optimax at TOTB. If it was enforced and you had to run road fuel, everyone would. But because you can, people will because it gives a significant advantage.
Gaz.
I'm not saying they can't run non race fuel...I'm saying it's way more important to protect the engine doing a 1mile straight flat out than worry about det on a turbo'd engine.
havent read all thread. too long.
Might be interested in running but will have no timeslips.
She should be nippy tho.
is it too late?
ps, if she runs she will run race fuel, is that a prob?

Hi Usmann,
I don't think you can get in at this stage now...
Gaz.
Just about to put an order in for race fuel for TOTB - does anyone want any?
VP or Klotz, anything goes. Full range and price list on our site under Race Fuel. Normally delivery on fuel costs £48, but since theres a few ordering it'll just be £5 to bring it to the show.
Gaz.I'd like some, to be on the safe side, but I can't afford £100 for 5 gallons of VP C16!
Klotz 113 or 116 will do for me but I can't seem to find the Klotz juice on your site though Gaz. How much is it?
I'm ordering it from Gaz to keep EGT's down at high boost. You telling me all those big power GTR's, Scoobies and EVO's are running on Tescos finest. Don't think so.

Gaz will point you to here Jake.

Thank you sir.
It's got kinda expensive hasn't it? Last time I bought some Klotz 113 at Santa Pod it was £48

I'm not telling you they are, I'm just pointing out that the somewhat vague rules kind of suggest they should be.
We all know that all the faster cars will be running exotic stuff, I know one of them is planning to use meth, if it's 'commonly available' to them then they aren't breaking any rules.

Michael I didn't mean it to sound like I was having a go. It was good at Santa Pod Jap Show to have the Pro Class and the Amatuer class. Perhaps TOTB could consider a similar Pro Race Class and a Street Class.
Anyways. Which trader wants to setup a group buy on these portable intercooler spray kits for the event :d http://www.safelincs.co.uk/section.php?xSec=31
Matt - that clutch has been fcuked for over 12months hasn't it!!! :)

113 Oxy (2.4% Oxygen) Racing Gasoline Ref: KL-492

Matt - that clutch has been fcuked for over 12months hasn't it!!! :)
Sadly, Yes. I need a new clutch, flywheel, 4th gear syncro needs replacing, and whilst I'm at it, the selector bushes need replacing too. What with moving work premisies & home, I haven't had the money to do it all:(
The car still drives fine on a daily basis, but the clutch won't withstand drag launches.
Looking forward to this years event, shame a few have dropped out :(
plus shame the crd in demo class now, he's good for low 9's this year, maybe a sneaky 8 :)
Keiths car is looking great, was awesome to see last year.
Anyone know much about this skyline? (pic attached) its gtcultures new demo car, road legal (apparently) and has run a 7.9 quarter!!!!! if this is there i think we should all go home :run:
Pic is from japshow, it never run though, wrecked a diff on startline or something equally serious.
Admittedly, if its there, its going to be seriously impressive :)

The CRD car doesn't get it best times at TOTB due to the surface (like us). I doubt it'll get an 8 unless they've done some serious work.
The Duke Skyline will be fast, but they need to iron out those problems first!

The Duke Skyline ran at Jap Show at Santa Pod and shut the track off for a fair old while when it spat oil everywhere. It's also in the demo class though, so no need to go home just yet :)

We have 2 discounted entry tickets if anyone is interested?

I was about 6 or 7 cars behind too. My engine was therefore nice and cool (relatively speaking) and I was pretty happy with my time!

Matt, I'm afraid that the competitor details were already well out the door to the Straightliners people so no changes could be made at this stage. Sorry guv.
6 Supras, not a great showing but hopefully we'll make up what we lack in quantity with quality (and Jake).

Old paper licences anyone?? :)
Can anyone turn up to watch, do you need to buy tickets up front?
Edit:Looks like tickets can be pre-bought up until tomorrow (friday), after that it's £20 on the gate. Anyone know what the parking/traffic/access is like? Is it as bad as Japfest at Castle Combe?

I was reading a thread on the Evo site and apparently there has been a 900bhp Evo entered into the event (video was included, looked undriveable) and there will be an interesting Puma in the demo class.

James Ramsey, it's in demo class.
and there will be an interesting Puma in the demo class.
It's not on the list, demo class is Tim Webster in his Duke R33, Calder, a twin engine Mini estate and the EVO you mentioned above.
Lots of nice cars on the list though, should be a good one - rally demo rides next to the main car park runway, the top speed viewing area and bus are back as well :)

We just wanted to say thanks very much to Chris Mann, who has very kindly & unexpectedly refunded us for our entry, it sounds like it's going to be bigger & better this year.
Best of luck to all those competing and all things being well we'll be back next year.
