View Full Version : Lake District sportscar meet-up

AJI
20-02-06, 14:46
The date for this year's event has been set for Sunday 13th August.

(restricted event - open to ---> MkIV Supra Club members / Supercars / GT cars / Sportscars)

The event details are contained on the webpage via the link below:
http://ldsr.43i.net/index.htm

The event this year is going to be bigger and better than last year's. I am expecting a wide range of different sportscars to turn up, hopefully most of them will be Supras.
So if you're up for a meetup followed by a drive out in one of the UK's most scenic areas with a load of other sportscars then get yourself along !

(other invited cars/clubs can setup or already have an attendance list of their own)

This needs to be a National Event mods please!

By far one of the best meets of the year. Will be there as always.

darkrider - any reason why this has been moved back into a sub-region section?
With this move of thread.. will it affect any linking from other websites? ie. will the URL from the original thread have been changed when it was moved?

Only reason I ask is that I've linked this page into a number of other sprortscar forums so that they simply left click and it brings them here.

I am hoping this event will attract guys from the Scotland area, the North east and the north west. Does that mean I have to copy and paste this thread into all those sub-sections? (Not having a 'go' or anything, just that I'm still unsure how these new sub-sections are supposed to work).
:-)

:-)

Sub sections are for the areas the event takes place. As this is a large event organised by you within the Supra forum, but inviting other clubs it should be in the NW section as this is where Cumbria comes. We are trying to make people aware of the meets so that they know where in the country the meet is taking place, sounds strange, but it makes sense.

Your also planning the Ring trip which is in the National as there is not a Out of the UK meetsd section (yet?? You never know with Mawby).

The thread is in National. It should be in NW, when the event has taken place it will be moved to the NW section as it is a NW meet.

I hope this clarifies the reason's for the event section change.

hope this is received okay. if not :p :flasher:  LOL

we will coming on that date in august 13th, great video, liked it how you put on the details that it wasnt a race and you was off like a rocket and left nearly all of them (naughty), but having a car like that and a nice clear road its got to be done, see you and the others up there....
Thanks Dom.

ha ha ... the chosen route each year will encorporate some fast flowing sections and some twisty scenic sections. Very true, its not a race, but at the same time everyone is driving high powered sports/gt cars which make good use of the excellent driver's roads in the area... that section on the video where I 'shot off' was only for a mile or two... then I slowed down for everyone to catch up. ;)
You'll enjoy it when you come along.

just an update on the cars attending..... it looks like there is going to be a great variety of types turning up. There is already interest from the following : 4 or more Skylines, 6+ GTOs, a few TVRs, a Porsche or two, a number of Aerial Atoms, a few GT-fours, some interest from a few Ferraris and even a Lambo Gallardo may attend. (not to mention the above Supras on the list).
I'm about to gauge interest from the Aston Martin owners to see if any of their members in the north would like to come along. (I know they had a successful meetup last year in Windermere which I drove past one day).

The FTP host that I'm using is very tempremental and keeps closing my account... so sometimes the links on the first page haven't worked.
I've recently re-done them but if there are any problems please let me know.

AJI
15-06-06, 14:03
domdotcom - just enquiring which other jap cars you are bringing along?

The reason I ask is that I've restricted the event to Supra club members, Supercars, GT cars and sportscars.
So cars such as Civics, Micras, scoobies, evos etc. (ie cars that don't fit the above) are not .... hows the best way of putting it.... well they don't fit the invited 'profile' of the cars that will be attending.

I've tried to really focus this event so that its like no other (apart from the London tunnel run - which is also a restricted driving event).

I'm trying to get the event full of car types that are rare and special... as this will add to the spectacle. Moving away from the typical jap only sportscar style events and opening it wide open to all types of beasts.
:)

Definitely no chavs allowed !! So corsas, novas etc. will be set on fire on site ! ;)

there would be a honda prelude vtec inj sports 2litre 2 door coupe, toyota celica gt4, honda civic crx with s2000 bodykit 2 litre with alot spent on it, and finally a mazda mx5 1.8litre v6... if u need any piccies i will send them...

hi again, i have got two walkie talkies at home and like you have said on the details about the event... i have these pmr ones they are Oregon Scientific model TP-329 it has 8 channels with 38 sub-channels on it, do you think that these ones are compatable with the run?!...any news on these other cars to come or not (even though on last years run there was a couple of these cars there) thanks Dom.

AJI
18-06-06, 18:26
Dom,
yeah those radios will be fine for this event and also other mkivsupra.net events.

As for the cars you have mentioned, it would be my preference for just the 'invited profile' cars to attend but if you really want to bring them along then I'll not kick up a fuss ;)

Yes you are right, on last years event I got a number of local lads to attend to make up the numbers. But this year the list of attendees has risen dramatically.
If everyone who has put their names down on the various forums lists turns up then there should be a great spectacle of both jap sports/gt cars along with a number of other sports/gt cars which include some Aerial Atoms, a Caterham or two, a Corvette, hopefully a few TVRs and possibly some Supercar exotica.

But as with most car type events.... the turn out will depend heavily on the weather. But even if the weather does turn out to be bad the chosen route will still be scenic and be challenging to the driver. :)

So does that mean you are coming or not?? You should come up for it will be a very good day out. Surely the awesome roads, gorgeous scenery, large majority of top quality cars and good company will outweigh the occasional shed of a car.

AJI

paul mac - just to answer the general chav element query.... this event is a restricted event and only open to the following :
MkivSupra.net members
GT cars
Supercars
Sportscars

no chav corsas, novas, saxos etc. will be allowed to attend.

This is in the interest of safety primarily... I am not wanting to create an environment whereby small power to weight cars are trying to 'race' big BHP GT cars. Also to not allow young new drivers to the road the opportunity to 'race' bigger BHP cars. By restricting it I am hoping that the type of driver attending will be mature enough to not want to race other cars but to simply have an enjoyable drive out in the UK's most scenic area on some of the UK best driver's roads in the company of some great sportscars.

There is a good variety of cars planned to attend this year and with all these types of events the turn up on the day will be very dependant on the weather... so lets hope for sunshine. Even if its raining the roads that we will be driving will be good fun.... plenty of sidewaysness on the hairpins ! ;)

Even if its raining the roads that we will be driving will be good fun.... plenty of sidewaysness on the hairpins ! ;)
thanks for taking the time to clear that up, it may be a bit touch and go for the date stated but does sound like a good day

Hi Guys, Im a member with my Supra, how about my friends with other Jap's car, will they be allow to come too for fun?
cheers

tango - depends on their car types - if they are truely special cars then they can come otherwise I'm afriad I'll have to say no. (The usual scoobies, civics etc. etc. are a no no anyhow).
I'm trying to keep a tight control on this year's event otherwise car numbers will be too high and the event won't go as planned.
Too many cars means that the convoys will be too long and the planned stops at car parks both at the meetup points and along the route won't be able to accommodate the numbers.
I hope you see why I am making this decision. Cheers.

Hi AJI, my friends has a Lexus, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AJI
19-07-06, 12:05
well..., sorry, but you'll have tell them 'no' I'm afraid. Can they fit into your Supra ??
This is an event aimed at the car types mentioned above, to keep the event as intended I have to be firm on this.

Last years event was fantastic, but it was spoilt by the 6 or so drivers who treated it as a race. If you want to race then thats fine but send them off on thier own and let the rest of us who want to have a convoy and show off our cars do just that. Also who ever leads the convoy needs to wait every now and then to let the convoy re group. I know i sound like a kill joy but we have not all got a 400bhp supra.Lets hope the weather is a bit kinder this year.:)

AJI
21-07-06, 23:30
Mark.supra - yeah I agree.
It will be best if everyone could print out their own copy of the route (see page 1 of this thread) ... then you'll know where the convoy is heading.

There will be some fast sections of road and after these the convoy will slow down to allow cars to catch up again.
It would be a bit boring to drive slow throughout the whole route, but as long as you have you route map you'll be able to catch up again.

Hopefully there will be no racing, the event details have stated throughout that it is not a race, and those who choose to do so will do entirely at their own risk.
I must point out that some of the roads, due to their 'driver's road status' usually have police patrols and mobile speed cameras on them.

Hopefully there will be something for everybody.... be it scenery, good twisty roads, variety of cars, a bit of cruising or some enthusiastic driving, it should be a good day out. (Also no CHAVS !) ;)

I've put together a dedicated website for this event:

hopefully the download links will be more stable than the old site.

Ok, with this event being only just over a week away i thought id post up to see if anyone is interested in meeting before hand and driving up in convoy. Obviously this is for the folks, like me, heading from the South but anyone is welcome to join in. Im proposing the following "pick-ups" on route but if anyone has any other sugestions then please post em.

1. Preston - BP Garage at the Tickled Trout Hotel, J31 M6 - 9am

2. Lancaster Services - Just before J33 M6 - 9:45am

3. Teebay Services - Just after J38 M6 - 10:30am

4. Arrive Penrith Golf Club - 11am

Like i said they are just a guidline so if anyone has any better suggestions then please post em up. Otherwise please add your names to one of the following lists (ie copy and paste as usual) so that i know how many people are meeting at each location. We will be stopping at each one for about 10 mins to allow people to join up, then setting off to the next one. Have to be quite strict about the timing so we get to Penrith on time.

you saying i'm poor or something :(

;) yeah i just figured i'd almost be there anyway with coming as far as the M6 on the M55 so the Tickled Trout is only another junction or two, rather than meeting you all the way up at Lancaster, and i can convoy along from the start then

do you want to drive at 56mph the whole way too to make it more economical for me? you barstard... :p

Spitting that dummy out again are we Wes?? Ive just had a trip to Tesco to fill up with 99 Ron ready for sunday, really looking forward to it, just a bit worried about the readings on my AFR gauge, may have to take it a bit easy on sunday, its showing that its running a bit lean i think. Need to get someone to check it over who knows what they are looking at.

how close is the Tesco 99Ron to the tickled trout? i've just paid 102.9p for Optimax in St Annes :( and the Blackpool Tesco hasn't got it yet still

I know the Blackpool one hasnt, was just there with the petrol gauge below the "E" so had to put a tenner of normal unleaded in to get me home. Was gonna give you a bell see if you wanted to meet up but was only up for a few mins picking my Season ticket up off a mate.

The Tesco is a bit of a trek from the Tickled Trout mate tbh, its in Chorley and i would say at least a 20 min drive from the garage. It was 100.9p a litre for it and unfortunately i had a discount voucher thingy for 5p a litre off...but it ran out yesterday...gutted. Good stuff though, cant believe how much different it smells to usual unleaded.

Ok, with no one meeting at either Lancaster or Teebay Services, ive decided to scrap them from the list and have updated the times as appropriate, hope ive not put anyone out too much by doing this but thought it was pointless to stop at them for 15 mins or so if no-one was meeting us there, might as well just get up to the Golf Club a bit earlier. glad to see everyone had a good time. pitty about the weather... this is the third Lakes meetup that I've done.. I tried beginning of summer, middle of summer, end of summer and each time it has rained :(
Glad to see it didn't put too much of a dampner on things, the roads we went on are good to drive in all conditions.

Nice vareity of cars turned up, I think driver of the day (or should that be mad-man of the day) was the Aerial Atom driver. Sitting in what looks like scaffolding on wheels through rain and shine, in not so high temperatures takes a bit of loonacy I think. Must be said though it is a great car, 2L Honda VTec engine in such a lightweight thing equals lots of fun.

I've got some good footage of the route... it may take me two, three or even four weeks before I have anything to post up onto the forum. If anybody has any footage they want to send me, to see if it will go onto the club video of the event that I will be making then please PM me.

assuming mine was the only wingless Supra there, i'm shocked at your comments!

But, contrary to what Gaz says ;) , I treat it to a Meguiars 3 stage every couple of months or so, which consists of a paint cleanser, a polish & finally a carnuba wax. I find it comes out a treat for the next few normal washes then (the last time it got the 3 stage was a month ago so i guess it must have come out ok on the weekend after a simple wash & chamois)

I would just like to add that £65 pounds was raised for charity. Such a small entry fee and it creates a noticable amount of cash which I will be handing over to 'Eden Animal Resue'. This is a sub-branch of the RSPCA that takes care of animals that are in need of shelter or care and operates in the Penrith area.

Also just like to re-state that if any body wants to send me their footage (in MPG format on CD) then please PM me. The complation video will be put together in the next few weeks.

Did you have that camera by your shoulder rolling during the day, if so just wondering if you were going to send the footage to AJI for compilling with all of his. would be good to see i know that.
I was unable to switch my suspension out of sport mode during the drive (the code indicates a worn rear active damper) and the harsh ride prevented a stable image (headrest mounts aren't optimal), so I dumped representative clips at 5x speed to smooth it out. It's on the 3S Video server here (http://3svideo.vidiac.com/video/b566cff5-c7bc-4853-99cd-981d013221d8.htm).

It is just a long, boring, shaky version of what I posted, and as the audio was hooked in to my engine mic, the soundtrack sounds like this (http://media.putfile.com/Matthews-Stealth-Greddy-Type-S-BPV). Sorry it didn't turn out better...

I live in Ripon. You're near Caton? Does your club have a members map (http://www.frappr.com/gtouk)?

Edit: Speaking of maps, I also had my GPS running and created a KML of the route (http://web.onetel.com/~bjmsam/logs/LakeDistrict.kml) (well, until the batteries ran out on the M6). Until OneTel configures their web server properly, you'll have to save it to your local drive and double-click to display in Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/). The "Play Route" option is pretty cool. Here's a screen snap from Keswick down to Windermere (track in red):

I will PM Mawby to see if it is ok to put onto the club google video site.
This will mean I have to send a CD down and it may take another few days before it is ready to download.
Its about 45mins long !! And it has turned out looking quite alright :)

yeah the vid will be free download from the club's google video account. I am hoping it will be ready to download by the end of next week (assuming I can get my ar$e into gear and send the cd down to Mawby in time)... apparently vids uploaded to google take a few days before they become active.

The full res vid is over 400mb !! I am still to render out a med-res version which will hopefully be a more download friendly size.

if you want to PM me your address details I'll send you a CD.
The vid format is in WMV but I will also try and render it out in MPG format so it can work on DVD players.

Vid arrived today, awesome so far. Just one question, when did Darth Vader become a cameraman?? :p

AJI
16-09-06, 20:58
ha ha ... yeah I know what you mean. The camcorder microphone is set to sensitive and picks up things close to the camera aswell as far away (including breathing) :)
I've left it with no music added as everyone has different tastes in music and it also allows engine sounds to be heard clearly,
I've added a lot of the footage to the video in order to get nearly every car in it. Must appologise if anyone is missed out.

Hopefully it will be uploaded to the club video section soon so everyone can download it.

I just cant stop watching the bit around 25mins where your mate in the CRX goes past me, turns the camera to face the road and then i drop a gear and floor it past him. Love it. Class vid all round, especially the bit up hartside.
Also the pics at the end look familiar ;)

Gareth - yeah I know the bit you are on about... I laughed at that also. My brother was the guy in the CRX and one of his works mates was doing the filming. He was acting as film-car for the event and I think he got some good footage.

HI AJI..

Just checking whether a CD was sent to me the other week...

Not nagging!!! Just the postal service has been pretty cr*p recently.. so making sure it was sent before i go to the post office to have a whinge at them!

AJI
19-09-06, 20:27
Yeah Gord, the CD was sent the same time I sent the one to Gareth... last Tuesday I think it was.
To be honest I have had a number of mailed items dissapear over the last year. Especially when I have been sending CDs and the like. Mawby informed me that the CD I sent to him never arrived also.... I have sent another one down to him in order it can be uploaded onto the club site.

But I am loosing any respect for our mail service.... far too many things are dissapearing. I'm guessing a lot of items which may be CD shaped will get theived by various 'people' should I say, to be on the safe side of things, and the mail service or authorities seems powerless or unwilling to stop it.

Just take this case in question.... 3 CDs sent out on the same day... only one of them makes it to its destination.

Appologies if you have not got your CD. I am out of CD-Rs at the moment and it maybe the weekend until I get to a store which sells them in order to make extra copies. Hopefully Mawby will get the last CD I sent within the next day or two and the vid can be available for download.

If its not arrived in a week or so let me know and ill run a copy off for you, with AJI permission of course. Not really fair to expect AJI to do all the work and pay for all the postage again.

Yeah its a Knats Knacker short of 600 Meg. Like i say if your copy hasnt turned up by weekend let me know and ill get one out to you in the post, or find someway of hosting it for you to download, but its fairly big. Although the Medium Res version of the film is only 113 Meg. The High res takes up the other 500 and odd Meg, so if the Med res version is good enough for ya im sure we good send that over the net.
I think Yousendit.com can take files up to a gig, woud take a while to download, but could just leave it going over night.

Gord R
19-09-06, 23:44
Ah right.. if the med res is only 113..can bung that on my webspace..think 600 might be a bit big...

Will sort it out tommorow with AJI

Unless u have a cpy of the med res?...that you can upload...then i can be the host for everyone to download from for now

Gord R
19-09-06, 23:58
Right forget that..iv signed up with a site that offers 1gb freeonline storage..

When you have a sec gaz or AJI..maybe we could put both files at that location..so people can download either depending on timescale/internet speed...

Saves on postage costs of resending them to Mawby
