:Pling: Yep it is official.:Pling:

Have you noticed how the roads dont appear to dry out, even though we have had little rain? They seem very greasey? Noticed the number of posts about twitchy back ends or worse? RL kicking in alot more than usual?

There is an explaination. This year sugar has been added to road salt. It aids distrubution reduces corrosion, stays on the road longer, reduces environmental damage, lowers LEA costs and makes grip levels worse.

So all those long srtreaks that look like deisel on the road are probably the sugar salt mix that just takes ages to dry out.

Is is going to take alot more rain to get rid of this years salt once the frosts are gone.

It good to know your driving has not got worse or your suspension has not suddendly developed a major fault, or your RL is not buggered.

BTW I have not tasted the local road surface to test fo sugar:p

yep its true, they add molasses to the mix... but this is intended that it makes the road more grippy and not more skiddy !

Its main role is to help grit stick to the road and not get blow or knocked into the gutter etc.

The roads never dry out in mid-winter due to the lack of sun-light and the lack of strength of the sun-light when its been dry for a period.

That combined with road salt which never actually dries...... the outside of the particle clumps dry but the inside remains wet (or moist), and when tyres run over them it forces out the moisture and even on a dry road after cleaning your car it will come back covered in salt and grime.

you're right Gaz, not all are. There are a few southern area counties testing it out this year. If its a success then it will become standard procedure for the Highways Agency to 'roll out' to other counties for next year.

Our depot isn't using it yet here in Cumbria, but we had a company newsletter article that Worcestershire was trialing it out this winter. I think there were a couple of other counties that were going to be testing the stuff also.
