View Full Version : The Nurburgring Trip
OK everybody, the dates look as though they’ve been released and the date for this trip is set for Friday 30th June through to Monday 3rd July.
[Open dates (for reference) : http://julesperry.com/ring-2006.htm ]
The ferry company and times are listed below: (It is down to yourselves to book your tickets)
Ferry company – P&O
Outward route : Dover to Calais Return : Calais to Dover
30-06-06 - Outward time : 06:25 (to arrive in Calais for 08:40 – one hour ahead of English clocks)
Ship name : Pride of Kent
03-07-06 - Return time : 19:45 (to arrive in Dover for 20:00) Ship name : Pride of Calais
Cost : £85.00
You can book via their website - P&O Ferry booking site
Accommodation:
There are many hotels and camping sites in the area.
Here’s a link to a number of them - http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/where_to_stay.html
With the numbers that are going on this trip it is very unlikely everyone will be located at the same hotel, for this reason I am not going to state any particular hotel name that everyone must book into.
(It is down to yourselves to locate and arrange your bookings for your accommodation).
Where ever you get sorted you will notice accommodation prices in Germany are a lot cheaper than here in the UK. ;-)
Safe to say the nearest Hotel is located in Adenau... its called “Hotel An Der Nordschleife” and you can see the track from it !! It has secure parking and lots of rooms and facilities.
All of you Gran Tourismo 4 gamers will see that same hotel as you go over the Adaneu Bridge within the game.
Failing that, there are also a number of places to stay within the village of Nurburg. So please take some time to surf the web so that you are happy with your accommodation.
You’ll have to be quick in booking up mind you.... there is a little insignificant event taking place called the World Cup or something like that.... must be something to do with indoor bowls maybe ;-)
The trip format is listed below:
Friday morning --- Meet up at Dover to catch morning ferry to Calais.
Drive from Calais to the Nurburgring.
Friday afternoon --- Get signed into accommodation. Then rest of the day is yours to do whatever you want. (Laps, sightseeing, spectating etc. etc.)
Saturday --- full day to do whatever you want.
Sunday --- full day to do whatever you want..... apart from at 4pm there will be a photo shoot opportunity in which all cars are invited to line up in the camping field next to the track entrance.
Monday ---- Quick visit to the Museum/Garage for a few souvenirs and then set off back home.
Miscellaneous info for the trip.
-We will be taking PMR radio/walkie talkies and using Ch.5/05 ... this will allow everyone to have a chat along the route there and back, also to allow everyone to be informed of fuel-stops.
-Please bring a recent European map incase you get lost.
-There will be no car orders in any of the drives there or back.... so please don’t feel you have to wait behind any other car. If you wish to drive faster or slower then its entirely upto yourself.
-Please bear in mind that the Nurburgring doesn’t allow camcorders.... if you are found by the officials to be filming then they are free to take you off the track. (cough cough – must be getting another cold ;-)
-Please make sure you’ve got plenty brake-pad and brake-disc material left if you are intending on doing lots of laps.
-If you are going to be using Sat-Nav then please check we are all using the same route.
-Please arrange your necessary break-down cover and travel insurance.... because you just never know what could happen.
-There will be a fuel stop or two en-route...but please try to have a full tank at Dover before we set off.
-It must be accepted that you enter this event entirely at your own risk.
-If any of you have any specific questions then please PM me.

We will be meeting up with a number of German MKiv owners at the track over the weekend. Thanks to Chiefgroover for organising that.
This is going to be a good opporunity to see what the German guys have done to theirs cars and it will make the photo shoot even better.
It will be down to us lot to show them how to drive around the 'ring ! ;-)
Although I'm guessing some of those guys will be fairly nifty at that track without any demos from us !

Hello people.
Has everybody managed to get sorted with accommodation so far?
If you're struggeling then please let me know and I can give you some 'pointers' for a few local places.
Also something to take note of is the check in time for the outbound ferry. The booking details from the P&O website state that we are to check-in 30mins prior to the departure time. So therefore we should be making a move onto the ferry at 05:55 on the Friday morning.
Its an early start, but this will mean more time for the track on the Friday !
:-)
A bit closer to the date I will put up the details of the chosen route from Calais to the track. (So those of you with sat-nav can plug it in).
Last year we went on the E40 and went via the Brussels ring-road. The ring-road is a very conjested part of the route and I think this year I'll choose a route which misses that out. All details will be put up on this thread in due course so please keep a regular check here.
Final note : There are still plenty of places available for other members of this BBS to come along and you still have plenty of time to get booked up.
The more the merrier !
bye for now,
Aron.

I haven't decided where I'm staying just yet, but I may be able to help with the route. I live in Germany not far from the dutch border and very close the start of the A46 autoban. It is approximately 58.2 mins by autoban to the Ring from my place by major motorways, mostly autoban.
AJI, are you organizing this shin-dig? I could PM you my address and proposed route then you could plug it in your sat-nav and decide if you like the route?
BTW, I may have found a 350Z to join us.
I was thinking of taking the E42 this year instead of the E40. The E42 takes a more direct route from Calais and also misses out Brussels.
My parents go touring in Germany every year, for the past 8 years, and they say the E42 is by far the best route to take.
So the proposed basic route will be as follows :
(numbers in brackets are the local road numbers)
From Calais - E40(A16) then onto the E42(A25)(A27)(A16)(E19). This route goes past Lille and then Charleroi. The E42 then travels across Belguim to Liege. At Liege the E42 joins the E40 momentarily and then turns south (A27) and then into Germany. Shortly after entering Germany we'll take the E29 northwards and then onto the B258 and onto the Nurburgring.
Hopefully you'll be able to meet us somewhere along that route Jspec Germany?

I'll hook up with you guys somewhere along the route. We'll figure it out as we get closer. I'm planning on making several trips there before this one also. I wasn't able to find the A27 or E29 on this map(mapquest), but if you can get me a picture of your route on the German side, I can find a good rendezvous point.

You know,.... you guys are going to drive right by 'Spa' with that proposed route. I hear it's really hard to get on that track though. Has to be an organized club day.
I thought Spa was in that general area ! We might make a brief stop to check it out. (Not for a track session!, just for a few photos maybe).
You drive right passed Spa on the E40, I wouldnt say its in the area, maybe 50+ miles away from the Ring.
plenty of time still to book up and come and join the fun Bobbeh if you're up for it.
I'm stopping in the same hotel as last year. Martyn (RX7) and Darkrider have found a new one within sight of the track !
(I remember seeing the signposts for Spa and Zolder on the way home from last years trip).
Hehe, no worries my name will be down when I know what my June plans are :)
And as England will still be in the world cup, its 1/4 final's day on friday the 30th june !!
Opening times for the Ring if anyones interested.
http://julesperry.com/ring-2006.htm
bobbeh - that link is already on page 1 of this thread. ;-)
Its a damn good web-link that guy has done actually... it makes viewing the opening times so much easier that the official 'ring website.
Sorry, I missed that completely hehe, I was chatting to Steve when he was going and he was complaining about the lack of decent weekends and gave me the link as evidence, so I thought I'd pass it along. Hes going the end of may for the 4 day stint.
Anybody got a rough idea of cost excluding petrol ???
So far for me:
Accomodation for 4 nights about £80 tops
Ferry travel return for £63.50
Insurance - included in policy
Gin = £500 (for the bring home stuff)
taking about 500 quid for petrol and nic naks
Tom PM me details of where your stopping etc will tag along aswell

(seemed to have lost Martyn for a second there... he's now back on the list).
The proposed route in visual form:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/AJI-2004/route.jpg
(Not sure why, but the sat nav program suggests taking the B258 on approach to the nurburgring.... which is why the map shows the route heading north before it heads back southwards again just before the 'ring.
(maybe the more direct route in that area is a bit too narrow?)
We appraoched the 'ring on that road last year and it is nice and scenic.. so I can't foresee any problems.
3 and a half(ish) months to go.... seems like an eternity ! ;-)
Looks awesome, I can't wait!
What sort of time do you reckon we'll arrive at the hotel/track AJI? Are you planning to get some laps in on the Friday? :)
Echo that, can't wait. Will be taking the NA, so no speeding off and forgetting me please!!
need to get a bung and then away we go.

if anyone is intrested iam going over via ferry from newcastle or hull. the cost of ferry works out more expensive , but if you work the miles done and travelling time ad additional expense , its about the same cost .
fuel to get down from up here to dover works out about £80 each way , then up to the ring another £80 + tolls. so you are looking at £340 + ferry before you get to the ring . the ferry overnight crossing works out at £265 with cabine and evening meal and breakfast. Then about £40 in petrol to the ring ...
anyone intrested let me know . i have done the ferry trip many times and its a good laugh.
We'll arrive in Calais at around 08:40 and then it will be around 5 hour trip from Calais to the 'ring. We'll be there for around dinnertime. This gives us lots of time to get settled into accommodation and then back to the track in the afternoon to do a few laps or to get to know the area... whatever you want to do really. (I'll be on the track giving it LARGE by the way!!)
Initially we'll head straight to the 'ring car park when we first arrive at the track and then we'll decide a meet up time in the afternoon after everyone is settled into hotels.
It will be a steady drive over to the track so any non-turbo cars will not be left behind ;-)
Also we are taking a route which doesn't have any toll roads.

Man, I'm stoked. I'll be making my first Ring trip end of this month/beginning of April.
Spot on AJI, ta :)
Any chance of leading me (and any other 'ring virgins' ;)) round a 'spotting' lap of the ring for the first lap? :)
steve - yeah sure, no problem. The track is basically the same as on the GT4 game when it comes to the sequence of corners and their severity.
You'll notice straight away that what the game doesn't teach you is how much steering input a slight movement of an anologue game controller is relevant to. And although the track is very smooth and consistent there are a few bumps and 'off camber' corners which the game doesn't highlight very well.
The bumps are nothing to worry your suspension by the way... but if you're on a mission and going for a shcumacher lap time then they become very important because at high speed they can unsettle the car quite a lot.
When we all meet up again after settling into accommodation on the friday afternoon I'll lead all you 'ring virgins round for a sighter lap.
But between now and then... be a good idea to learn the corner sequence on GT4 if you have it ;)
Just one point which I think I should mention.... if any of you are running wider than stock tyre widths (either front or rear) and you are also running stock suspension then you may want to fit some spring assistors. These are a cheap solution to not having to buy uprated stiffer suspension.
I found last year on my stock suspension that the tyre was catching the wheel arch slightly on the compression areas of the track.
Spring assistors (usually sold in Halfords) simply slide between your coils and stop the spring compressing too far. They also assist the shocker and add to the stiffness of your stock spring (in turn reducing body roll slightly).
The cost of these are only around £12. And I've got mine fitted for this year's visit.
Top one, thanks dude :)
I have an idea of what to expect from playing Forza Motorsport and watching everything I can find on TV and I have a few videos of professional drivers/cars doing laps. I'll be going less than half the speed I manage on the games I'm sure ;)
I have the uprated option factory suspension (JSpec) and stock rims/tyres, so shoud have no worries there :)
Steve do you fancy a mini convoy down to Dover ???
Steve do you fancy a mini convoy down to Dover ???
Hi Ian,
sorry dude, been away for the weekend and only just noticed your post :)
I'm going to be picking my girlfriend up from a train station on the way - either Brum or Luton or... not 100% sure yet - it could be fun it it could happen but I have a few details to iron out first mate :)
I found last year on my stock suspension that the tyre was catching the wheel arch slightly on the compression areas of the track.
Or if you buy sized tyres like mine you wont have any wheel arch rubbing :D
moved to Europe meets section :)
For anyone who hasn't booked ferry yet if you go to http://www.theaa.com/services/member_benefits/travel_offers.html and click on P and O link you will recieve discount takes cost down to £76.50 :)
If you are new to track driving or new to the Nurburgring please take a quick look at the attached file.
Cheers.
Hey Aron, I didn't move it mind !!
another day nearer, my supra goes into see the exhaust man 2nd may for a new baffle and padding in the back box
Brakes in May and mid june will be the belt (just in case)!!
this event is rapidly getting closer.... is everyone sorted out?
All I've still to do is to arrange travel insurance and euro breakdown cover.
I've tried to put as much info into this thread as possible but if you want to ask any questions please do so.
Just one question to the people on the list... how many of you have got euro SatNav? The route to the 'ring is finalised and there will be a minimum of two stopping points between Calais and the track in which we'll have a driving break and re-fuel etc.
***Please all ensure you fill up at Dover.***
If you don't have sat nav and you loose sight of the convoy at any time then there is no worries... the route is straight forward... and you'll be back on track if you bring a Euro Map with you. I'll give out my mobile number at the meet up in Dover, so if you do need to stop for any reason then you can ring me and I'll let you know where we are.
The second stopping point will be close to the German border and I am waiting to hear back from the German owners as to whether they will be meeting up with us at that point or whether they are going to meet up with us later in the weekend. I'll keep you posted.

AJI - give me the spot where you guys are crossing into Germany. I couldn't find it on Mapquest. Can you cut and paste a picture/map? I'll be cruising down with 'Supra Steveo' and whoever else I bring from here. Additionally, I'll have some more military buds froma base South of the Ring meeting us there with a broad mix of cars. Shoot me your cell # also.
Right then... please have a look at the attached image.
The light purple route are the roads we'll be entering Germany on. Basically its the E42 from Dunkerque, until Liege where we join the E40 briefly, and then back onto the E42 southwards towards Germany.
The red dot is the proposed stop point where we will have a rest and re-fuel etc.
The red-yellow arrow is the point where we enter Germany.
Then there are the yellow and blue route options to get to the Nurburgring.
My sat nav suggests the yellow option but the blue option looks quicker.... but it maybe a narrow road or something? Do you know this road at all ?
Just a thought I have some walkie talkie radio jobbies we used them on gumballs have around a 2 mile coverage has anyone else got any I have 2
Jspec Germany
04-04-06, 16:11
I don't know that road dude, but I can ask a buddy who's driven it. I can meet you guys at the refuel spot on that map. Looks like it's just south of Verviers near a town called 'Fays'. Do you have an exit number? There's a faster way to get to the Ring from my house, but it'll be cool to jump in the convoy.
I put some text in the original info for people to bring along those PMR's (personal mobile radios)... they are very useful when driving.

Forgot to attach this. It's a zoomed in shot of that area near the planned stop/refuel point.
Jspec - I'll try and get a g.p.s. position off my sat nav tonight.
The nearest place to the stop point is called POLLEUR.
AJI,
you won't be losing me now matey..... I will be NA-T!!!!!!!!!
AJI,
you won't be losing me now matey..... I will be NA-T!!!!!!!!!
Don't think they will be losing me either :)
Don't think they will be losing me either :)
true, but they obviously thought my little NA might lag behind.......
good effort Tom... saw your vote thread the other day.
If you've driven in europe before you'll know of the way that the europeans like to push their way into non-existent gaps in traffic. They will actually try to force their way into a gap which is not long enough for their vehicle !
This happens a lot and in no time there is a big queue of cars between yourself and the lead cars in the convoy.
So its not a speed related issue that you may loose sight of the lead cars. ;-)
But your turbo addition will make a huge difference on track... you'll get a lot more out of your car !
The Nurburgring track start point - webcam.
http://www.nuerburgring.de/fileadmin/webcam/webcam.jpg
This view is looking at the toll gates at the start point of the track for the public open days. The long straight you can see going back into the distance upto the top left of the image is the final straight of the track. And the car park is on the left hand side.
The image updates every 30sec (I think) so keep hitting F5 (or refresh) to see if you can see any Supras !!
So far I've seen everything from rare exotica to euro-chavs go through.
This will give you an idea of the variety of machines you'll be overtaking on the track ;-)
One orange Supra spotted so far. And a testarossa is it?
I think I can see an E30 BMW 3 series in that first shot ;)

Went on the easter weekend and it was absolutely packed. One corner there was 15 cars going into it.
You need eyes in the back of your head!
Gaz.
I was checking the webcam to see if I could spot the Envy Supra over Easter weekend.
Have you got any pictures or footage from your trip Gaz?

That black S2000 belongs to a friend of mine. He used to have an R33 GTS-T running 1.3 bar but was hit by a German, totaling the car. He says the S2000 handles better but he misses the power.
not long to go now guys and gals!
just a reminder to people that now is the time to be sorting out travel, breakdown and health insurance (if required).
I have printed off a load of trip schedule sheets.... please come and collect these at the meet up in Dover on the Friday morning. These are just to keep everyone 'on track' as to what's going on during the weekend in respect to the trip.
I'm well excited mate :)
Will be getting breakdown insurance sorted this week - direct line works out at £35 - know anything better? :)
that price is in the right ball park.... I paid £40 with the RAC.
Just want to do a check to see if everyone has got themselves a PMR walkie talkie ?
If not then although its not an essential requirement for this trip they do help you keep in touch with everyone in the convoy. If you want to call in a fuel stop or any other general talk then they are very useful.
They are also useful at the track to keep in touch (but not to use them whilst driving on track abviously).
Argos sell them for around the £30 area.
We will be on Ch.05/05 so a one with sub-channels is a must.

How Ironic. I will be in Lincoln, England thru the 30th at a minimum. Plan is to drive down (one hour from home) and meet you guys as soon as I get home. Bummer, looks like we won't be meeting along the dutch/belgian/german border. More to follow as I get words.
AJI,
not fancy popping over to Squires today then ????? Be a nice drive in lovely weather!!
Post up product code for Radio and i will buy one!!
I don't have a radio. I'll think about getting one but will have to see how much money I've got spare after I've accounted for fuel/beer budget ;)

As long as they have the 8 main channels and the sub-channels to go with it. All these two-way radios are classed as PMR 446. Its to do with the bandwidth frequency and the power levels of the signal.
But as mentioned although they aren't mandatory for this trip they will be extremely useful.

sorry mate, I've been booked up for weeks.
So have I,- months in fact - but I was wondering if I'm getting a decent deal or not?
I have added this thread http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?p=872651#post872651 for people interested in stopping at Ashford the night before the ferry on 29th
Used it for Dragonball and couldn't have any complaints :)
Ian, Kate and I are staying at the Travelodge on the M2 rather than the Ashford one, unlike Ashford the rooms were still being sold at the discount price last week, plus it's slightly nearer the ferry terminal I believe.
See you soon either way :)

Steve... no, the other one. Yeah mate, I'm near the border.. stone's throw almost. It's actually fastest for me to jump on the A46 east towards Dusseldorf to the A61 towards Koblenz. There's another way to the ring right off the A61 that's a better drive than taking the A1. Door to gate for me is just under an hour.
Can someone tell me how much their hotel in Germany is costing them please? :D

The Hotel we are stopping at is around 90-100euros for three nights. Thats 30-33euros per night or about £22 per night. (going from last year's prices).
The closer to the 'ring you get or the more luxury hotel you get the more dearer it goes generally speaking.

AJI, is there still an option to get in at that price? I mean, it kinda seems silly staying less than an hour from the house, but I don't want to miss the party.
BTW, I'm taking the BMW to the ring tomorrow to do a few laps with the wife. The supra needs an oil change and tune up so she gets to stay home in the garage.

So I've just returned from a day at the ring and man was it busy. It was closed when I got there mid day. Apparently a couple of bikers and a car got together and there were two fatalities. We (wife & I) went to eat and got back around 4:30 and it was back open. Jumped on, and did a cautious (not according to my wife), yet spirited first lap. First impressions: Holy $hit, there's a lot of traffic, man there's a lot of elevation change, and the only thing in common with GT4 is the order of the turns. Some fast bikes and GT3s out there and the hearing in my right ear is lesser from my wife screaming in fear. Did two more laps through the evening and had a great time. The big BMW is far too heavy and rolls too much for that track. Supe should be better, but there's no way I'm taking it out there without the bigger front brakes. 8 lap ticket cost me 108 Euro. There were a lot of accidents and I saw the yellow flag on all three of my laps. If you're gonna' booze the night prior to driving, I highly recommend a ton of water before bed and the morning of. Driving that track really takes it out of you.
As for the DBs, I heard some cars that were loud, but not really loud. My recommendation is bring a baffle and don't rev it in the parking lot or at all until you're 500 meters down track. That's all I can tell you dude.

Tom,
We are going down the M6 and then onto the M1.... a few of us guys from my area want to try out the M6-toll at full whack speed !! ;) And at the sort of time that we'll be travelling on it should be perfectly quiet.
I take it you'll be coming down the A1/M1 ? If so then you'll be able to meet up with us at J15a on the M1 just north of Northampton.
I know is a bit of a lonely travel down until that point but unless you want to travel across country to the M6 I think that will be the easiest place to meet.
Let us know what you think.
Cheers.

OK, well I am off on the 29th so free for anything.... might drive down to the Midlands and take it from there..
I'm such a dumbass... I reaslied today that I've had this for a while!
I have a turn-by-turn guide for the 'Ring written by some racing driver chap in PDF form if anyone wants it? It's 28 pages long, in full colour with drawings of all the corners and descriptions of the ideal line through them - plus the potential 'gotchyas'. Interesting reading even if like me you won't be going absolutely balls-out. :D
If anyone wants a copy just drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send it on :)
Steve
If you print that off and bring it along, that would be great.
I think I have 99% of the corners sussed in terms of the correct racing line for my Supra, but it will be interesting to see another driver's perspective.
The only one I'm not 100% sure on is at what point do you chuck the car into the karrusel.
Last year I tried a few different options but my wheels were catching the arches so I could push as hard as I wanted.
I don't have a printer at home unfortunately :( I woudl print it at work but as it's very graphics intensive it takes aaaages to spool and print each page (and there are 28!) and I'm going to get busted, lol.
I'll try to get 1 copy printed out somewhere/somehow and will bring that with me but if anyone else wants a copy of the PDF just drop me a PM and I'll happily email it to you :)

I have no idea where I'm staying yet, but I'll say that being close to the ring and within eyesight of the track is a bonus. Who knows where rooms are available with the above in mind and others are staying? Cost? PM is ok if you want.
Unfortunately, I will be in Lincoln, UK thru the 29th/30th. A lot of depends for me. My supra is badly in need of: oil change, airbox swap/filter change, plugs, fuel filter, and most of all - big US front brake swap. Parts for all are in the post and may show up before I leave Friday for Lincoln. Most of the brakes I already have, just waiting on the braided lines. How ironic. I am going there and you all are coming here to Germany. Hopefully, my parts all show up by Wed/Thurs and I can get at least the front brakes swapped and oil changed. That would make the car driveable. If not, I may bring it anyway and trundle around the track using a lot of manu mode engine braking.
Also, the S2000 and one of the 350z's have had to drop out due to deployments downrange to sandbox land. Skylines' are unknown now cause the S2000 owner was my link to them and he's on an airplane right now. I need to find out if the other Steve who just PCS'd to Germany is going. I'll keep the updates coming as I get them.

Aron,
possibly going to be in MK with Martyn (RX-7) and leaving there around 2am. So might see you en-route.
speak to you b4 then I'm sure.
I'm not a football fan either ;)
Nick - hope we get to meet up with you :)
Just a thought Aron/everyone - when/where are we meeting up on the trip over? Ian R and I (and our passengers) are staying at a travelodge the night before (well, part of the night before ;)) - where will we meet the rest of you?
Shall we swap mobile numbers Aron?
Steve,
Ian R has mine, I have Arons, I am now leaving Milton Keynes around 2 am, so will call Ian when get to Dover, can't wait dude.
We shall all meet at the car park before the ferry terminal.
As you go through Dover you keep heading for the Ferries.... there will be a car park before you pass 'the point of no return' so to speak. (just trying to go from memory here, but you pass a fuel garage on the left and the car park in not too far along the road from there).
Myself and the group of cars that are convoying down with me should already be there. So you should find us easily.
Just look out for a Silver Supra, a black GTfour, a silver GTfour and a blue scooby.
I aim to be there quite early, say 4am(ish)...the ferry boarding time is 6am and as long as you get there before 6am you should be able to meet up.
I'm about to PM you my mobile number...
Is everyone taking their radios with them by the way? This should make it all easier.
yes, I think everyone should have bought a radio by now.
Ch.05/05
Good idea Godmutha... I'll have my radio turned on, so as you approach the area use those if you like.
Nice one chaps :)
Ian R has said that he'll lend me a radio and I'll PM you my mobile number too, Aron. Ian and I are both in Silver Supes - his is a loud NA-T and mine is a stock RZ with the anthracite (grey!) wheels.
One other quick question - regarding petrol - how many miles will we be travelling over in France/Belgium before we'll stop - if fuel is noticably cheaper over there (is it?) I don't want to waste money by filling up over here the night before - money is tight at the moment :( plus I want to save every possible penny to spend on tracktime ;)
I can't wait for this! :)
fuel in France is not much cheaper than here (if at all), so its best to fuel up before the ferry. (might be an idea to chuck some crappy 95ron fuel in as all we are going to be doing is motorway cruising - until we get there of course!)
We should be travelling for about 2-3hours before the first stop, and then another 2 hours before the 2nd stop and then 2 hours until we get to the 'ring.
As mentioned, we should be arriving at the 'ring at (or just after) mid-day. (1pm-2pm area - depending on amount of time spent at the stops - we may aswell get something to eat at one of them).
Fuel in Germany is about 4p-5p cheaper than here (I think - maybe corrected on that one) but the best place is Luxemburg... but we aren't going that far south.
Have a good trip and a great time you lot, make sure you all come back in one piece :)
We will have to meet up when you get back Ste and you can tell me all about it.
Have fun :d
Hey Supradrivers over there,
we will arrive on Saturday! See you on the greatest circuit on earth ;-)
Have a safe trip!
Katrin
So waiting for this............................

Cheers for the info Aron, I'll top-up before we cross :)
Gutted fuel isn't like, free, or something, over there :( ;)

See all you guys at Dover on Friday morning ! Take it steady on the way down.

Ok all. I'm back from Lincoln and my liver survived! I'm checking the post to see if all my parts have arrived. I've scored two airboxes and have a third on the way. Hopefully, one will work. Also, my braided lines are coming for my U.S. fronts. I'm a bit worried though. If I put them in tomorrow and drive around, will they be ok for the Ring on Saturday? I don't think I'll make it down until mid-morning Saturday, but the wife and I want to stay with everybody Saturday night. What hotel are you in and are there any rooms available? I'll make the reservation tomorrow. So excited. My 2nd time to the ring, but the first time in the Supra. It will be crowded. Don't kid yourself. Best laps are early in the morning. Right guys / girls please post all links etc here. I will move any other posts to here from today

Great weekend guys. Those of you that couldn't make it really missed out. Great seeing old friends and meeting new ones. I damn near ran out of gas on the way home. Good thing I had a gas can in the garage full of super-plus. I'll post some pics and vids later.
The first Video is online!
Thanks to Blue W!!! And of course THANKS to Aron ;)

Only bad part has been it has been 2 groups?
And it has been a them and us type of weekend. Not what I signed up for but, hey it happens
Probably post pictures in the morning before we leave to come home.
Big thanks go to Lucy and Kate for all of the photo's they took.
Loved the lap Aron and a good catch just before the Karussell :D

Are you looking for the names to go with the faces?
Just checking in.
Finally arrived back home after another monster drive from Germany to Cumbria !
Its 02:40 on Tuesday morning and I'm still wide awake.
Anyway... the weekend was absolutely brilliant ! Great to meet new faces both English and German Supra owners.
I did many laps round the 'ring and got round with only one slight scary moment..... and it had to be the very final lap I did aswell !
I saw the UK Supra guys head out onto track and I had one lap left on my ticket. I followed them out and caught them up and got some really good video footage of them going round the 2nd quarter of the track.
The camcorder battery was flashing and this means only 30seconds of power left... so I went to pass them to get a fly-by shot of them all...
on braking into Bergwerk corner you are supposed to come down from 5th to 3rd gear (via 4th obviously).... but instead of catching 4th it went into 2nd !
Instant rear wheel lock up and a scary angle pointing towards Steve R for a moment, but it was recovered more or less as soon as it happened (I've actually made that mistake before I have to admit). Just involves planting the clutch back in and firing on some counter-steer. But yeah... apart from that all went perfect.
The German Supra owners had some very tidy cars indeed and Honey (Katrin) tells me there are lots more where they come from. I invited them over for a meal at our Hotel and we got along very well. I also took them out for a flying lap round the track with sideways action thrown in for good measure.
Sorry to see both the RX7's get damaged, and really glad to see there were no injuries.
I've got loads of camcorder footage and lots of pictures which I will get sorted over the next number of days.
I agree with Jspec, more of you guys should plan to go over there... the area is great and the track is awesome.
Well that's enough from me for the time being, I'm gonig to see if I can get to sleep !
only one slight scary moment..... and it had to be the very final lap I did aswell !!
Slightly scarier for others i believe.....
Has anyone else ever locked up their rears mid (wrong) gear change, With no excess engine noise before?
Big thanks though to Tom, Steve R, Kate and Martyn, Rob, Glen and Tone (the Rex, MX boys), much entertainment provided both by beer at night and driving by day. What a fantastic weekend, apart from a few blips, but everyone is ok, so its fine.
The guys at the hotel were amazing, not only Frank, but the guys that spent hours reshaping the rex's nose back to its original shape almost perfectly.
Great run back eh Steve ;) Flyin past everythin!
Ian and I ran a 9'43 lap as our fastest, as its the one we caught with the least track traffic, apart from the coach that we got stuck behind round three corners. So we have somethin to aim for later in the year. ;)
The hotel was fantastic, spitting distance of the entrance to the Ring, and yet perfectly quiet at night. All in all it was a fab weekend, cant wait to go back for sub 9 minutes later on in the year :)
Are you looking for the names to go with the faces?
I certainly am that sir! ;)
Names to faces : Left to right
Rob (silver Rex)
Tone (black mx5)
Glen (passenger silver Rex) aka mad Aussie
Martyn (silver Rex and armco damager)
Tom (ahh aristo) Aristo
Mike (j-spec germany) Black TT Auto
Me (ian R) Silver TT-T Auto
Lucy (Godmutha) Passenger silver TT-T Auto
Kate (steveR's Kate) passenger silver TT6
SteveR (silver TT6) behind the camera :)
Slightly scarier for others i believe.....

Its on the camcorder...... it was a genuine mistake. No other reason for me to get sideways like that in close proximity to other cars.
Not sure what you're trying to imply by that but I'll take it in good spirit and glad to see you all had a good trip.
My faster laps over the weekend were down in the low 8:40's, the spring assistors that were fitted have done a great job.
I was saying to Katrin that the Supra is a truely great car in that it can drive all the way from England to Germany, do 16 laps of the 'ring and then drive all the way back with no hint of a problem.

Good glad its on camcorder will be happy to take a view when you post it up just strange there was me seeing it as the back wheels lock like they did I am amazed that you mangaged to reverse a gear change compresion lock if you did then fair play. Either that or you brake bios is set up heavy on the rear the only other explanation would be that you pulled on the handbrake !!!!. But i'm sure you are not stupid enough to do that on an outside overtake, just after seeing a terrible accident a few minutes beforehand.
All I can os it a shame when you where given numerous chances to overtake you failed to take them and decided to do so on a corner where more risk would be involved.
But hey thats the nature of the beast when your on a track. :)
I saw all you guys indicating to let me by but we were filming you going round the track. It was a great opportunity to get some really good footage of a convoy of Supras on the 'ring at the same time.
When the camcorder battery started flashing I thought it would be a good idea to film a final fly-by in order to get a close up of each car.
As you know on the 'ring you can overtake on corners if the other cars are aware that you are there.
I made sure each of you had moved to the right hand side before I passed and proceeded to overtake. It was when I was turning in at Bergwerk that I caught the wrong gear.
I am not sure why you are thinking that I had any malice in my intentions, or any alterior motive for me to put myself or anybody else in danger.
If I wanted to 'show off' or anything like that I would have come flying past you at full throttle on the straight before that corner.
As I have said I have been in a the situation of catching the wrong gear on an earlier occasion and I have quite a lot of race track experience so I rescued the situation more or less as it happened. As you will see from the video (when I get it uploaded) there was no panic in my car, you hear me braking into the corner, then you hear the revs rise through the roof and the rears lock up, it then goes real quiet as I fire the clutch back in and then I try and re-find 4th gear.
Who has said anything about malicous intentions I have not tried to imply anything other than what I saw. To think so would lead me to believe you have a guilty concience.
BTW with your 'track experience' I thought you would be aware that Bergwerk is a 3rd gear corner not a second. I am amazed that you even got into fifth gear at that section of the track.
NIce to see you got some good times sort out you gear changes and you might even improve on them.
Good to see you car ran with no problems mine ran alot better on the way back as manage to get some air into the intercooler as we did a steady pace on the way home. :)
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v143/AJI-2004/?action=view¤t=CAPTURE.flv
Here's the vid link.
Bergwerk is a 3rd gear corner, who has said different ? And yeah my 'track experience' has taught me that. 5th gear is easily attainable along the previous straight. On the faster lap times I put in my gears were spot on thanks....it was only on that single occasion in the weekend where I missed the change.
I saw you guys pass us on the way home, your car sounds very nice. Did you catch an earlier ferry?
Sounds like it was an eventfull trip, shame I missed it:d

Dude, if you say it was a mistake, then fine, I'm taking your word for it. It just looked different from where we were, coming into the turn. I seriously thought you'd dropped second with a foot-full. Well done on the lap times. Maybe next trip we can spend a little bit more time as a group. It kinda felt like everybody was just doing there own thing. I was a little disappointed that none of the Germans took their supes out. I understand the guy in the Pink supra's situation. Kinda hard to shift with a handful of stitches up your wrist.
Jspec - on the video you'll see that the revs rise very fast when I hit 2nd, there is no way I'd treat my car like that intentionally.
The german guys were primarily there for the atmosphere and to see some of our UK Supra owners. I thought it was brilliant that they turned up and they had some very impressive cars.
Two of the German Supras had some engine problems (if I remember correctly), and the other one as you pointed out had an injury which would have made it difficult to drive well.
Good to meet you by the way Jspec, your car looked good on the track.
Jspec Germany

Yeah, I'll agree. Their cars were nice. What were their problems? Nice to meet you as well. My car will look a lot better on the track when I'm riding on US spec brakes all around and the suspension is sorted.
Hehe Aron you wreckless git
You guys found any track pics of your cars yet?

There's going to be some good shots/footage. Between Martin filming and the other assorted stuff we had. I know there's a DVD that's gonna' get distributed as well (Unedited footage, which is fine with me). I wish somebody got a shot of me passing the bus on the outside along the most watched section of the course.

Then again, video of Steve and I sideways at speed would've been nice also.
I had a fantastic time, and Kate says she enjoyed herself too - I'm really pleased I went and would love to go back again next year.
There were highlights and lowlights of the trip for me - like Mike says it would have been good to do stuff together as 1 big group, but I guess that was complicated by us staying in 2 different hotels 3~4 miles apart. Maybe a point to note for next year? As far as the 'slide of doom' ;) that Aron pulled in front of me is concerned, I'm not in a position to comment on why/what/how/etc it all happened as I was understandably thinking more about how to remain uninvolved in it and any aftermath than I was looking at the technical detail of how it happened. Whatever did/didn't happen, the main thing is that it didn't end in tears for any of us and for that, I'm glad. :)
Moving on... It was excellent to meet everyone - both the few I'd met before and everyone else that I hadn't.
Tom - you're a top chap and you saved my bacon by having what must be God's finest oil with you - I shall pay you back in full for what I used. You're a top man, very genorous (you have a friend for life in Kate after you gave her that pack of lemon beer!) and your Aristo looked good both on & off the track; you have a car to be proud of and I don't think Kate will let me even consider getting anything else if I get a replacement 2nd car!
Lucy & Ian is there any need to say much here? You're both top, top people - we had such a laugh :) We shall have to meet up again soon especially seeing as you live so close! BTW Ian you must be a nutter if you thought that the 10:40 lap you did by following me was 'fast' and then you went out and managed to take a minute off that with your very next lap! :D Oh yeah - get those videos of me posted up ASAP ;)
Mike (JSpecGermany) - it was a shame you could only stay for part fo the trip but the weekend wouldn't have been the same without you mate. Thanks for the passenger laps, hope you enjoyed the lap in mine :) It was ace to meet you and your wife Carly especially after missing out on the opportunity on the Dragonball. BTW I think that you're right about your bufered speed signal odometer connection being suspect if the power steering doesn't weight up - that will/is likely to be why the delimiter doesn't work, too. Hope you get it sorted soon anyway buddy, but go steady when you do ;)
Aron - thanks for organising the trip, the info you provided was invaluable. The 'Ring has been an experience I won't forget and like I say I look forward to going back :) Watch those gears 'tho eh ;) Please pass on a 'hello' to the others staying at the Sonneck.
To everyone else who was staying at the Ringhaus (Tom please pass thison if they don't frequent this forum) - it was quality to meet you all and you made Kate and I feel right at home, especially in the bar, lol!! :D I'm sorry that the Rexs got damaged but it was great to see how philosophical you both wre about it - and to see you back out on track afterwards!! Respect is indeed, due.
And finally, to the guy who took me out in his Elise right at the end of our final full day at the track, I will never EVER forget that experience. I thought Elises were a bit pants but feck me they don't half handle when the driver knows what they're doing. Really, really awesome - that was the best way to finish the weekend off and my face hurt from smiling so much!
Once Kate has got our photos off her camera and I've stitched those that need stiching, I'll post them up in the pics thread - if anyone knows how we can get the video off her video camera, please advise! Oh and I'll email the chap at the bar who showed me he had photos of (I think!) each and every one of us going round, some of those were really excellent.
This post is long enough for now so I'll post again in a bit what it was like going round the track - but right now I need to eat!
Then again, video of Steve and I sideways at speed would've been nice also.
Yeah that was quality, excellent recovery mate, don't think many people would/could have held that slide :Pling: :scare: :help:

Phew what a weekend! thanks guys for everything.
Kate x
Was indeed a top weekend and would like to thank everyone at the ringhaus for there hospitality including the owners anyone thinking of going to the ring I would highly recommend www.ringhaus.com . Again it was a shame that hotels where far apart.
Will be up for this again soon can't wait until the next trip :)
Do we know if Tom & co got home safe yet?
Aron - forgot to say, we got the scheduled ferry home (althought it was delayed by 30 mins) - but we didn't see you guys anywhere??
Have text Tom but no reply as yet maybe still on way home ....
Is that a gunmetal supe with a Do Luck bodykit? Anymore pics? :D
I'll resize my (Kate's!) pics now & post on the other thread. Ian's is silver with a Do luck front, the other one is a crazy flip green/gold/grey/mental thing with carbon bonnet IIRC
Photos attached - drastically reduced in size and quality so let me know if anyone wants them in full :)
(Video to follow probably in several weeks time once we work out how to get it onto a PC  !)
Where are everyone else's pics & videos?? :)
Edited to say - you can see the final section of the track track in the background of some of the pics; it appears from between the trees and runs dead straight alongside a public access road (with junction) that is just in front of it (i.e. nearer to the camera).
Oh yeah, that MSB Supe (furthest left) has a Do Luck front too, I think?
Pics added....

You've seen this thread (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=73920) then I trust? :)
Home and shattered, read up on the interesting posts. Have 7 pm's that can wait.
Will post my thoughts tomorrow when recovered.
Really glad to see you had a great time Steve.
On our way home we stopped off at Spa Francochamps and had a bit look round. Looks like a very impressive circuit. There was a bike trackday on at the time.
I mentioned eariler that we saw you guys pass us on the motorway and thought you were heading for an earlier ferry. We actually caught an earlier ferry ourselves, as we arrived to check-in in very good time, which would explain why we didn't see you guys if you caught the scheduled one.
Just thought I'd mention something about the two groups of cars at the different hotels. There seems to be a bit of displeasure about the fact that there is a "them and us" type of affair. (something that I was completely unaware of at the time - as nobody mentioned there was a problem to me.... if there was it would have been nice for somebody to say).
When I did the original "gauging interest for a nurburgring trip" thread last year there was a lot of names on the list. From this I then looked into how it was best to make it fair for everyone in terms of accommodation, ie. to not favour anyone in terms of specicfying which hotel they should stay at.
I therefore drew up plans in order that everyone made their own choice of accommodation. From the initial numbers on the list it would have been impossible to get everyone into the same hotel.
But as the new thread with the trip details appeared the list was dramatically shorter, but the plans had already been made and I stuck to them.
This was the reason for the resulting two groups of people in the different hotels on the trip.
As for the break up of the convoy en-route then I think everyone who was there knows how this happened. The second service stop we had resulted in one group of cars setting off before the rest of us and we never saw them again until we got to the track.
There were other factors throughout the weekend which lead me to believe that the two groups just wanted to do their own thing. So I didn't interfere and just let people get on with their weekend.
I didn't think it would be best to set out a complete list of times and rules by which everyone must be at a certain place by a certain time and do a certain thing etc. That would have been too restrictive for those people who just simply want to go out and learn the track and put in lots of laps. The plans for the trip have been up on this forum for months and months... there was ample time to read the format and plan more get togethers if you felt it was needed.
I thought the trip overall was a good success, myself and the group of cars that I came over with had a fantastic time. The weather was great, we got lots of laps in, the track wasn't closed for any long periods of time, and there was a great variety of other sportscar in and around the area which made for a great atmosphere.
I will gladly step down from organising any further Nurburgring events if any of you feel I've made a mistake on any of the planning.
aron,
I don't think you realise the implications of being told your not welcome on a photoshoot.
I know the Aristo is not a 'supra' but it is a hy-brid as such and most photoshoots it is welcomed. Same as we parked in the same area all weekend and you where happy to park in the track car park where there was not enough space. Just little things for the first 2 days, but the little things cause the issues.
Sending me and Ian R a text telling us 2 different locations for photo's for instance, on the one to me you advised to go to the car park, yet you arranged with every one else the grassed area, was that a deliberate ploy to send me elsewhere.
I admit there was loads there, but not meeting up for meals, nights etc would be strange and only further the them and us mentality.
Apart from that, for the 2 groups it was a great weekend.
I have special praise to Lucy for all the video's and photo's she took whilst I enjoyed myself driving the track.
Glad that Steve R and Kate enjoyed their time and look forward to seeing them both again soon.
Bring on JAE
Final thanks go to all of the staff at
www.ringhaus.com
good friendly people who know how to look after you.
Frank, Valla, Heidi and all it was a pleasure.

I will gladly step down from organising any further Nurburgring events if any of you feel I've made a mistake on any of the planning.
Aron,
you do a good job well in organising the event. No one is asking you to no longer arrange a nurburgring trip.
Just, the not meeting afterwards to swap stories seems a little strange mate, we where all there to have fun and enjoy, but at the end of each day we went home.
you printed out loads of stuff and then not once did we meet up for a chinwag and a laugh the whole time we where there on a night time, watch each others video's and have a laugh at each other.
All that is being suggested is that next year you try to bring every one together a little more.
Your mates all had a great time, but everyone else felt like we weren't a part of the group, that's all people are saying and asking for a group together next time.
I don't think there is 1 photo from Germany with the whole group on, either cars or people. And if you look at the photo's posted I feel sure you would agree.
Tom, at which point did I say you're not welcome on the photo shoot? I recall saying that I want to get a few shots of the Supras first, then you saying can I park the Aristo in front.... I then said ok, and after a few shots you then parked it infront just as you said. I had no problems with that at all, neither did anyone else.
The first shoot was unplanned as the German supras had to leave before the planned shoot at 4pm.
The pre-planned photoshoot at 4pm, none of you guys turned up. I saw a few of you come into the grassed area and turn round and leave as our cars were parked up.
And I definitely do not recall sending out any conflicting text messages to intentionally send people to different places in an attempt to not have any certain cars in the photo shoot.... and I am surprised you'd think I'd do such a thing to be honest.
Myself and the other guys did plenty of parking on the grassed area, when buying tickets its sometimes easier to park in the tarmac car park as it is closer to the ticket machine. It saves having to walk the extra distance in the heat.
At no point from myself or any of the guys I came down with did we have the attitude of a 'them and us' line of thought.
From a number of factors throughout the trip as I've already mentioned I was under the impression that you guys wanted to do your own thing.... (this is not a them and us way of thinking as that suggests some form of rivalry.... I was just letting you guys have your own space without any interference).
I am really sorry you are feeling this way Tom. Why didn't you say anything if you guys were feeling some sort of divide between the groups? Why leave it until now, after the trip?
is that a bit like your pm the other night?
I will read and learn from all the comments and if you guys want me to organise another trip next year I will gladly do so.

photo's where of Supra's only, your exact words mate. I went to the garage to get some drinks, and parked in front beside my mates cars.
And I definitely do not recall sending out any conflicting text messages to intentionally send people to different places in an attempt to not have any certain cars in the photo shoot.... and I am surprised you'd think I'd do such a thing to be honest.
I asked the question but did read both texts..................
My only advice is put this to bed, I will be going to the ring next year and it may be the same time as you, but it will be with the friends I have made this year and will continue to make in the future such as the UK clubs we met whilst out there.
