2JZ-GTE Engine Oil (TT Engine on a MKIV (UK or JDM))
Stock = 10w30 Semi Synthetic
I recommend Fully Synthetic 10w40/50
Dry Capacity 6.5L's
Change capacity 5-6L's (Have 6L's ready)
Regular Driving - BPU or Less
5w40 - Silkolene Pro S, Castrol RS, Motul 300V Power
5w50 - Valvoline VR1 SynPower, AGIP PC5w-50
Regular Driving - BPU to Big Power
10w40 - Motul 300V Chrono, Royal Purple Racing 41
10w50 - Silkolene Pro S
10w60 - Castrol RS (NB Untested)
Track Oil
15w50 - Silkolene Pro R, Motul 300V

I'd recommend the 10w50 Silkolene as it's Ester based unless I was using the car only for short journey's then i'd use the Valvoline.
NB: Mobil1 0wxx has been known to get passed the piston rings and cause excessive oil consumption. I would recommened ALL 0wXX oils are avoided. 5W is the lowest I would use.
See here (http://www.mkiv.com/manual/manualtt/oil_change/index.html) for details on how to change your oil.
Interval = 3-9,000miles depending on use/power levels

2JZ-GE Engine Oil (NA (Non Turbo) Engine on a MKIV (JDM only))
Stock = 5w30 Semi Synthetic
I recommend Fully Synthetic 5w30-10w40
Dry Capacity 6.2L's
5w30 - Motul 300V
5w40 - Motul 300V, Silkolene Pro S
Change capacity 4.8-5.8L's
I'd recommened Silkolene Pro S 5w40.
Being less stressed that the GTE version any Fully Synthetic oil between a 5w30 and 10w40 should suffice.
Interval = 9-12,000miles depending on use

LSD Diff Oil
Stock = Unknown 75w90 Gear Oil
Capacity ~1.5L's (have 2L's Ready)
75w90 - Motul Gear 300 or Silkolene Syn5
I recommened either of the two listed - both have been used without issue.
Interval = 2 Years / 30,000miles depending on use/power levels
See here (http://www.planetsoarer.com/diff/diff.htm) for details on changing diff oil.

Manual 6-speed V160/161 Gearbox
Stock = Toyota V160 oil (PART No. 08885-01306)
Capacity 1.8l's when dry
Toyota V160 Oil (comes in 1L cans - require 2 cans)
Esso Dextron D21065
I recommened you stick with stock
Interval = 2 Years / 30,000miles depending on use/power levels

Automatic 4-speed A340E
Capacity = 8.2L's (But you can only really change what's in the sump of it and that is ~2L's)
Stock = Toyota Type-IV - 2L's for a quick change. Have 10L's ready for a full flush.
I recommend you stick with stock oils
Interval = 1 years / 15,000 miles per 2L quick change with heavy use. 2 years and 30,000miles if you're a light user.
NB: You only need to do a full flush if something is wrong....it could actually be harmful to do too many full flushes due to the additives in the oil.

5-Speed Manual W58 (NA only)
Capacity = ??
Recommended Oil = Any 75w/90 Gear oil should be ok. Motul Gear300 is a good option.
Stock = ??
Interval = ??

Brake Fluid
Stock = Dot 4
I recommend DOT 5.1
Capacity ~1.5L's (Have 2L's ready)
DOT 4 = Motul RBF600
DOT 5.1 = Motul RBF600, Castrol SRF
Interval = Every 12months (also after any track day!)

Power Steering Fluid
Stock Dexron III ATF
I recommend you stick with Dexron III oil but all makes should be suitable
Capacity <4L's
Interval = ???
To fully Flush it see here (http://web.archive.org/web/20041009134625/http://www.reepa.com/psflush.php)

Clutch Fluid
Stock = DOT3 Brake Fluid
Capacity = Under 1L??
Interval = ???
I recommend you stick with stock or use a DOT4/5.1 Brake Fluid.

Coolant
Stock = Toyota 4Life Red
Capacity ~9L
I recommend you stick with Toyota Coolant.
Interval = 30,000miles
This (http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/coolant_flush/index.html) should help you with a coolant change.
NB: 4Life changes colour as it get older, when it starts to turn a more browny red compared to it's vibrant red when new then it needs to be changed. Also 4Life comes premixed and needs no other liquids mixed with it.

The authour and site take no responsibility for your action/inaction following your reading of this FAQ...it's here as a guide.

Nice post Alex. Lots of useful info especially for the 'posess no car knowlegde' people like myself:)

I had been looking into oils recently and having always used Castrols, i checked out there site:-

Castrol is supposed to be less advanced than Silkolene...according to Simon (OILMAN) of Opie Oils.

But I used the 10w60 RS and found no issues in the short term with it.

oilman
15-06-06, 10:40
Depends what castrol you are talking about.... some are very good such as the 0w-30's longlife oils, and gear oils.

However the likes of the RS 10w-60 and the Magtnatec are very overated in terms of quaulity.

Please can someone give me some urgent advice. Right now I am near Carlisle and I have over 300 miles to drive back to Hertfordshire. My dilemma is that I have a bit of oil left but not enough. The current oil is Valvolene VR1 Racing 5w50 but as I originally got this when i was at JPS, I know that Halfords dont have it as i had a quick look yesterday. Carlisle is barren of anything except Halfords on a Sunday i think ! SO please please can someone urgent suggest what oil can be safely mixed eg Mobil 5w40 etc??? I have to set off this afternoon!
my car is Supra Jap import JZ-GTE. Twin Turbo with lots of mods and just under 400bhp.
look forward to replies from any early risers on a Sunday! :rolleyes:

When you say a bit of oil left, I take it you mean you're on min on the dip stick?

Batgirl
30-07-06, 10:15
hi - yes its pretty much minimum. The warning light came on randomly when i drove up on Friday then hasnt come on but the oil really is almost minimum. what do you reckon about mixing oil if i have to?

can't see a problem with oil mixing if you have the correct type - i once used gtx magnetec (sp) was running low :blush: - had no problems with it (did over 400 miles before had the chance to change it for the good stuff )- no issues -BUT do change it when you have the chance!

Batgirl
30-07-06, 10:26
so you reckon that as long as put in a 5w50 then it should be ok. What if i put in 5w40 with 5w50?

SUPRASUZUKI
30-07-06, 10:33
You'll be ok mixing for a top up, but try to avoid mixing synthetic and mineral oil. I take it the Valvoline currently in the engine is synthetic?

Edit - You'll be ok with 5w40 (as long as the type ie mineral or synthetic is the same).
Was it your oil pressure warning light or oil level warning light which came on? if it's just the level, then no prob's. If it's the pressure warning light it could be something more serious.
Hope not though!

Batgirl
30-07-06, 10:41
yes its synthetic. thanks for your advice.

Batgirl
30-07-06, 11:13
which is the warning light compared to level?? the exclamation mark came on at the same time as the little oil can symbol?
I am such a girl!!! :blink:
i will check reply when i come back from Halfords!!

Scooter

oil level is 'amber' in colour...........oil pressure is the red one.

Whilst not as bad if its the amber one it still needs checking out as this requires quite a bit of oil loss to come on and so you may have a leak somewhere.

Put in the spare oil you've got asap (as any mixing issues are minimal compared to running it when very low on oil) and then monitor the level daily is my advice :)

This may be a bit of a lesson in checking your oil more often and topping up before it gets to minimum..
Isn't there a good car accessory shop in Carlise which is open on a Sunday?...

Any chance of adding the Oil Filter part numbers to the first entry in this FAQ? Feel free to delete this post after doing so :)

IIRC there are two choices, a larger (Lexus?) one with a metal filter element, and the regular Supra one with paper filter and smaller capacity.

Edit:
These are from Paul E's helpful part no's thread:
Engine Oil Filter Stock Supra Turbo 08922-02011
Engine Oil Filter Lexus V8 90915-20004

You should not have a problem chucking a 1 ltr in to get you out of bother , then change to a good oil

Is there a recommended oil for running in new engines?
Also are there any problems with using fully synthetic oil after doing an oil change from mineral oil?

oilman
24-11-07, 12:57
To run in you will need a mineral based oil, we recomend 10w-40 semi synthetic.

Once run in is complete there is no problem switching to a synthetic.

The W58 is a 5-Speed transmission as fitted to the NA MKIV's. The v160/v161 is the 6-Speed Getrag unit.

Brake Fluid[/b]
Stock = Dot 4
I recommend DOT 5.1
Capacity ~1.5L's (Have 2L's ready)
DOT 4 = Motul RBF600
DOT 5.1 = Motul RBF600, Castrol SRF
Interval = Every 12months (also after any track day!)

UK spec stock is DOT 3 in the owners manual ;)

A little out of date though!

Power Steering Fluid
Stock Dexron III ATF
I recommend you stick with Dexron III oil but all makes should be suitable
Capacity <4L's
Interval = ???
To fully Flush it see here http://web.archive.org/web/20041209173121/www.reepa.com/psflush.php

One thing the instructions on the above link don't say, is how fast the fluid is pumped around the system = how quick the coke bottle is drained of new fluid. Luckily, I caught it in time :)

Can anybody say which oil should be used for the facelift LSD? The Toyota docs say it is *not* the same as used on pre-facelift LSDs, from what I remember.

It is still an LS 90 GL5 oil.

Have a look at this synthetic one from Silkolene.
