Hi all

 

New to this group after buying a 1993 TT Auto (UK) in white.

totaly standard apart from changing the oil to fully synthetic oil shortly

after purchase.

Its done 78k and cost me 11 grand 3 months ago, its got to be the best all round performance car ive ever owned and for 11 grand !!!

its gotta be a bargain super car.

 

But this is where the story drops a little ,  1 out of 4 start ups from cold i get smoke (didnt do it before i changed to fully syth, though im sure its not related) is this the turbos or the valve guieds or worse ?

 

Also its got bloody remoulds on it !! gonna change them very shortly any recommendations on tyre brand ?

Hi Tony, banished forever!! :biggrin: JB can this be moved to Technical? Tyres - I have Bridgestone So3's on mine, absolutely brilliant, rock solid even in the wet, mud etc. Not cheap (mine were about £225 for 265x35x18) but well worth it.

I believe fully synth oil can cause problems but will leave that one to the technical chaps!

I will leave it in this forum for the moment cos it may get technical later on once we have a few more symptoms to diagnose..

 

One thing we came across recently was the fact that one bloke had his car over filled with oil which caused it to smoke quite a lot. Have you checked the oil level when the car is parked on a flat road?

 

Synthetic oil should be fine on the mkiv and your car doesnt appear that have that many miles on it (Im assuming it has full service history?).

 

I have seen a couple of UK cars which seem to have compression problems for no obvious reasons, one had 80k on it the other had 130k, so it might be worth getting the engine generally checked over to make sure there is nothing strange.

Hi all

Ill check the oil level on the flat today , would be nice if that was the problem.

Its puffing out blue smoke only does it from cold and not on every start up, when it does puff for a couple of seconds the engine feels like its choked up then clears.

 

It has full history and seems an honest car so i recon the mileage is correct (even though im the 7th owner in 8 years, didnt lottery winners have a binge on these cars ?)

 

Thanks for the tyre recomendation im gonna change them next week

ill let you know what I shod her with.

 

has anyone wired up the rear brake light up the boot lid !

ok so it looks like i have a bit of a £problem !

 

checked the oil level thats seems fine.

Anyone know of a supra specialist in the south yorkshire area who can pin point wether its the turbo seals, valve guides etc.

 

or shall i try the dealer 1st then take it from there

No warranty bought it private off a woman who'd just found out she was having a baby (honest), she was selling to get a BMW 4 door.

 

I'd forgotten about this garage in chesterfield  Noble racing,  the put me a clutch in a lotus carlton few years back , its booked in thursday over night so he can check the cold start up.

He's guessing thats its the Valve seals but theyll  hace a look at the turbos and give me a quote for what works needed .

do come back and tell us what the problem is before going ahead with the work, if its valve seals or turbo seals then its going to be expensive and we might be able to recommend an alternative workshop thats cheaper.

 

If he says the turbos are shot then you can get hybrid replacements from Leon for about £800 each and they will allow you to run much more boost.

I did the high level brake light..

 

Got one of those cheap tacky things for Halfords type shop.

 

You need some long box type sockets as the light is on long bolts and you cant get in with a spanner.

 

Once it's out, cut the light open, glue the LED strip etc. in from new fitting. Glue back together, and either try to find the feed cable which is supposedly there, or just run a new one down inside the hatch to one of the rear clusters...

 

Also converted the brake and fog lights, so it looks like a j-spec from the rear, with twin driving and brake lights, but also has double fogs...

Could it not be condensation ??

 

I remember Chris Wilson saying that the Supra exhaust held enough water that it takes upto 200miles to clear on small runs.

 

He suggested doing a 50mile run up a motorway, stopping, waiting 15mins, and starting again, if still smoke, there was a problem.

 

Dont know the remedy though :(

What were you doing with the HKL brake light?

I got a replacement via Find-A-Part for a few quid and after I finished I'm left with some spare internals.
