Being a complete IT numpty, can anyone advise me on the min requirements I need to look for for datalogging and or programming EMU/RLTC?
My current laptop is a little large and probably over speced, a mate has a dell for sale with this spec:

Bit dated I know, but has a serial port and is a handy size. Would it do the job?

doesn't say what speed the processor is or how much memory it has or hard drive space. Maybe worth £150 anyway.

its 433 MHz with only 6GB. He wants £90

64mb ram? sounds like a reasonable price to me!

Yeah, think its a bargain, but is suitable for the job?

433MHz and 64MB RAM? You won't be able to run XP on that really. That's pretty low spec

hmmm, shame coz its a nice size, think RLTC and EMU can run on windows 98? (wish I understood IT!)
Edit. Actually, he's just told me its running XP.

it'll run XP slowly with that amount of memory. You never did say whether it actually has 64mb. I was kind of asking the question. If you add 128 to make it 192mb then it'd be usable with XP.

As you say though you don't need XP for serial-port terminal stuff.

that will easily do it. dataloging is a very simple process that doesn't require
hydra (latest gen chess supercomputer) to do it. so long as the software runs on it and it has the correct serial ports, it will be fine.

the only problem you may have is if you want to do some serious number crunching, i have some excel macros that take a while to run but i just leave 'em to it while i'm watching telly.

Thanks Eyefi, exactly what I needed to know.

Personally I'd use the laptop with the biggest screen available...but I liked to have all the windows for the eManage open at once.

i used to want some super lovely titanium powerbook but after it's landed in the footwell a few times the cheapest thing available was a lot more desirable. :)
