Poorly Supe

All,

Last night, I noticed a bit of a grinding noise when travelling at low speed in a low gear. When I pulled up, and idled (neutral, no clutch), I could hear a clanking noise (metallic, about two knocks a second). This is audible away from the car, and not just the traditional gearbox rattle.

If the clutch went back in, the noise went away... Investigated and it seemed to be coming from the windscreen end of the engine, somewhere towards the middle.

I took it to the local dealer for some advice and the conclusion was Getrag's suck (their opinion, not mine) and I should post it off for specialist repair. Oh, and they wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole.

I've also noticed power delivery is rough up to 3,500rpm, pre-spool isn't fabulous, and I can only generate 1 bar maximum. The DSBC is set for 1.2 peak so don't know what's happening there.

To answer the most FAQ I've encountered so far, the noise doesn't increase with revs. Best (informed, not Toyota monkey) suggestions so far include release bearing or flywheel.

Can anyone else advise? Should I quit driving the car (even sedately) until it's looked at by a specialist?

It sounds like two separate problems to me.

One : turbo/engine

Two : gearbox

I can't see how the 2 problems can be related.

Engine/boost problem may be one of the myriad pipes has blown off or split etc. as that can commonly cause boost issues.   why it would be running rough below 3500rpm i dunno.  sounds a little ominous to me.     IMHO you should take it to Leon Greene in Watford for his opinion.   He is very experienced and will give you an honest opinion on it.     I know that you're going to TDI also.       just don't write them a blank cheque, please.   nuff said.

I have a UK-spec manual too (1995, 49,000 miles) and i haven't had any problems with it similar to the problems you're describing.    I know it's Eric's ex-car and it certainly never had any probs in the time that Eric had it so it's a bit unfortunate and surprising it's developed a couple of issues so soon.   Anyway get a couple of opinions from the most knowledgeable people and then go from there I think.

Don't the Getrag 6-speeders have an associated clutch spring rattle?  I know mine does, very noticeable when in the garage idling.

And they don't suck, they are clunky and noisy for a reason - industrial strength and reliability!  I've never heard yet of anything going bad with them or the autoboxes for that matter...

There are a few 6 speeders in the US that have gone bad, syncro problems on second gear.

Having said that it's nothing to do with this problem.

My BMW had a dodgy input shaft bearing which used to make a soft rumbling noise with the car at idle and the clutch out. When the clutch was depressed it went away, like yours, but the sound was different.

The Getrag 6 speed is one of the only Toyota 'boxes with no dealer-servicable parts inside...

Flip,

When you out the clutch down you are decoupling the clutch driven plate from the flywheel. The resulting drop in flywheel inertia will make it slightly harder for the engine to keep turning at idle. This is why the engine sounds like it runs slightly slower, or maybe less smoothly, with the clutch in.

If the manual Supe has a single plate clutch (no idea on this one) then it is likely to be a *BIG* one to transmit all that torque!
