View Full Version : Short block Rebuild or Not?

I have stripped down my old engine from my previous UK spec Supra, which blew a headgasket over a year ago.
The engine would only fire on 5 cylinders when cold and run perfect when warmed up, this was due to water entering No6 cylinder and soaking the plug.

Now the engine has been sitting in my garage since then, I now plan on using the short block for my new project and was looking for advice on whether or not the block would be reusable?
I have removed the head and found surface rust on No6 Cylinder bore and also rusty sludge on the piston, which can be wiped cleaned.
I have also removed the waterpump and found orange sludge inside the water passages.

My question is has this surface rust scrapped the block or will it be OK? or
will honing the cylinders and replacing the rings do the Job?

I will take pictures for clearer description tommorow.

That really does depend who is rebuilding it mate TBH.

I'd have thought it'd be ok. I guess you could always slightly skim the block and rehone slightly so there's nothing visible I'd have thought you'd be ok. No idea what a new set of slightly oversize piston rings would cost you mind.

IMO blocks are rarely affected by some surface rust or mild overheating (which could total a cyl head)
You'd first clean it up properly, measure it for flatness and hone it ofcourse.

Would it be best to skim it down by 0.4 to then make it perfect for a 1.6mm HKS gasket?

The Block should be ok - heard of worse failures. Acid bathing might be in order?

Chris W and his coconuts may be able to sort out the surface rust

By the looks fo the photos it will just need a hone, but you WILL need to get it measured.

Hone amd measure, expect a rebore. I wouldn't want to mess about, just re bore and fit o/size pistons and do it right, it's a LOT of hassle if it uses oil or worse if you just hone and don't measure PROPERLY (and I find very few people these days can use a Mercer guage properly, if at all... :(

#3 Don't buy big wheels :p

OK Back on track now.

I may just get the block honed & measured as I know the bottom end was good, prior to the headgasket failing.
